Warning: Minor, tiny spoilers from December 10th’s Deal or No Deal ahead:
Confession time: I haven’t watched a single minute of Deal or No Deal this season at all. I’ve just been bored sick with it. Last season seemed to be a breaking point, where they just tried horrible gimmick after horrible gimmick. It got frustrating, tiring, and nauseating. Then we come to the new season and I hear of the Million Dollar Mission. That put more dread, and with ratings really starting to sag I figured the primetime version was slowly coming to an end with the syndie version rolling around. However, all of a sudden, out of no where, Endemol is getting back into the gear of things and making the show fresh, exciting, and fun. Most noticeably, they had Winner Takes All last night.
If you didn’t watch it, you missed what was probably the best episodes of Deal or No Deal I’ve seen in the US and probably in my top five around the world. The game, in short, is that three players played three separate games. The person who left with the most money in their game took home everyone else’s money while the other two went home with nothing. On paper this sounds good, but I had a horrible feeling that Endemol would do something stupid, like let the other contestants see what the previous ones got. Look at what they did to 1 VS 100.
Wow was I wrong. They did everything as perfectly as humanly possible. All the players and family members were sequestered in different rooms in isolation the entire time they weren’t playing. They either got a new audience or really coached the current one to play the game straight, because they did not do anything hinting at strategy. Howie acted as neutral as he possibly could have, and was very convincing. Even the Banker got into it!
The Banker is what made the episode for me. For people watching it a lot, has the Banker been giving good offers recently? For instance, when we were down to $50,000 and $300,000; I figured we’d be seeing $180,000 to $200,000 knowing our habits. However, we only offered $146,000. Fantastic and perfect. We did this for the rest of the show too. Why did it take them so long to realize that if you want a contestant to play a game to the end, you cannot offer a gigantic sum of money? You have to offer a lesser amount that makes it tempting to go on. The Banker was fair in offering tough dollar values to every contestant also.
Yeah, the winner didn’t leave with a ton of money, but who cares? The entire episode was incredibly enjoyable and just about perfect. They chose some fun contestants who were over-the-top but still lovable (at least in my eyes). They finally got the offers to where they should be, and they played the competition factor perfectly. I truly hope this was the beginning of many more Winner Takes All episodes. The one reason I love the Dutch version of the show the best is because they have the massive audience competition to see who plays. Adding some strategy to the briefcase game like they did today made it a whole new show. It increases the possible top prize while not screwing with the board. Now I just strongly hope they don’t revert back to old ways, but it amazes me that they are finally getting the picture with Deal or No Deal. It only took them three years, but they finally found out what makes it work. I’m hoping to tune in much much more, now, and see something as exciting, fun, and competitive as I did today. What did you readers think of Winner Takes All? Am I alone in sharing the feelings of this episode?

I enjoyed the episode, but if you saw everyone went to the end. This is because all of their thinkings were “That’s not enough to win.” Thats the only problem with it. Since they never think its enough to win, they’ll always keep going on. But, like you, I never watched an episode this season except last night’s, and I enjoyed it :)

I have to disagree. I *have* been watching this season, and like what I see. I don’t like shows that change their formula. Not only is “Deal” doing it…they’re doing it 3-fold (look at this week).
I also don’t like the competition factor…last night, contestants had to “look over their shoulder”…so, it wasn’t just about the game. Plus, they brought in *2* celebrities…does anyone remember why Regis’ version of Millionaire lost ratings? It was the celebrity factor.
Also, with the advent of gimmicks this week, they are getting away from the game.
True, the banker made “going all the way” more of a possibility…which could be a plus…but, that really depends on who’s playing the game…one person’s Million is another person’s $100.
I think the competitive factor should be left out, entirely. Contestants who have a competitive nature will be more likely to “go all the way” naturally…and that’s how it *should* be. I don’t anyone telling me that I should worry about who has what.

Personally, I saw it as just another stunt that actually worked in spite of the producers. I don’t know why this one show warrants a complete 180 on US Deal. The contestants were still grating. The change in the banker’s offers is almost certainly a one-time thing to tweak the players extra special for the special. At best, they’re going through a cycle where they’re adding twists to the base format instead of offering Hummers and ponies.

I’m going to disagree. (Peter Marshall: And you’re right, for the win!)
I did watch it all last night with one of my hallmates. During this time, we discussed a number of things, including final exams that we should have been studying for and, more relevantly, the show. Neither of us usually watch DOND, but we needed things to help us procrastinate, so we flipped to NBC right after Jeopardy. As the game progressed, we yelled about the format more than usual. We used to yell about gimmick prize offers, but last night it was about the complete change in format. It was even more about how screwed people were this time, as opposed to how much they could win. Was it interesting - game theoretically? Yes. Will that keep me coming back for more? No. I’m holding out for Million $ Password.
I think that this whole week is just a bunch of gimmicks being tested, and I bet that whatever people like the most we’ll see return. NBC/Endemol, here’s what I like: The British format. How’s that for a twist?!?
On another note, remember how we learned that they cherry pick episodes? I bet none of these would’ve made it to air if it hadn’t been for the special!

Are you kidding me? You enjoyed that episode, Alex? Dude, it took me an hour to squeegee all the crap off my TV screen afterwards. Another prime example of a stunt gone horribly wrong. The show has to stop going to to the looney bin to find contestants. Who cares if they’re crazy and stuff? They’re complete idiots! The second one made everyone watching go deaf. Even Howie seemed to be uncomfortable around her. At least the games seemed to be moving faster, though. That’s the sole redeeming factor.
This show has pulled more stunts (or stunting) than a radio station that’s changing its format (if you work in radio like I do, you’ll know what I mean). It’s enough already! Memo to NBC: Get some contestants whose IQs aren’t that of a house plant, and stop with the stupid gimmicks which sometimes fail miserably. Yes, sometimes it’s fun to try something new, but DoND is relying on that factor way too much. I used to like this show, but that’s beginning to change. It’s gotten to the point where it’s become overkill, and if they keep this up, the show might go the same route as ABC’s Millionaire and meet an untimely demise. Please, get the game back to normal before it’s too late. I still have faith in this show, but all the stupid contestants and many other factors are slowly driving me away from it. Let’s hope the next two episodes aren’t as bad as this one was…

I’m not a fan of DOND. That’s either because I’m usually not around a TV when it’s on, or it eventually grew boring for me. (I truly don’t know which one it is.) Somehow, I did end up watching a lot of last night’s episode, and the idea of competitive all-or-nothing did appeal to me (to an extent). But you know what though? I still found myself flipping over to TBS to watch Family Guy, so truth be told, DOND didn’t hold my attention very well. Of course, I made sure to flip back to DOND when I realized that I could probably recite the end of the 9:30 episode of Family Guy, so I made sure to catch the ending at the very least… Maybe there’s still a hint of appeal left in DOND for me? Or just for that gimmick in particular?

Wow, I was the only one who liked it apparently, lol.
I just liked the competition and change in the format. Honestly, DoND is barely any game in any version around the world and I’ve always missed a competition factor. The Banker’s not real so there’s no competition there.
The gimmick of the show is running thin. They needed some way to throw in something to switch it up while keeping it the same game, and they did here. It was the same show as always. You just had to factor in that other players were coming in, so you had to think “Is this good enough to win?” It added a strategical aspect to the show that’s sorely missing, and I thought it was pulled off perfectly. I’ll give you the annoying contestants, OK. But I’m able to look past that and see that Endemol did the show perfectly, they are finally getting the idea with how to do Banker offers, and they added a new aspect to the show which makes it fresh and exciting without changing the format.

I agree with everything you said, Alex. The episode was one of the most exciting so far this season. I can’t wait for Wednesday when the Deal Wheel makes its debut…

I wasn’t sure if i would like this winner take all game but I did. ( I wouldnt like this all the time though because one of the fact that two other people could play a really good game and still leave with nothing. They did do this very well though by Howie saying is this going to be enough to beat ??? even though he knew what the scores was. I wondered what would have happened last night though if that guy would have had $50,000 in his case instead of a $1 would both of them had won or would there had been a chose a case tiebreaker. I can’t wait to see what the deal wheel will be like and i am predicting that will be the best stunt of all. This was definity very exciting but that second contestant was way too over the top for me. The other two contestants were good and not as over the top. I definity need to be on Deal Or No Deal because i can have fun and not be too over the top.

I personally would like to see them do another such show with the three biggest winners on the show thus far.

we probably wouldn’t have seen a second person go for a huge amount if it weren’t for the winner take all..
but inevitably, the problem is that all the contestants will likely play down until the end, and most of them will lose.

I missed the end. Could someone please tell me who won? Was it the first contestant or the last one?
David
13December 11th, 2007 at 7:34 pm
the first one Dana…
and I think some of these gimmcks work better than others, I thought last night worked well- but it was anti-climatic. What could have been cool is if they had like 5 people play THE SAME GAME- have random members of the audience pick the cases in each round (as well as the original case), and each person has to decide individually to DoND after each round. They keep their choices secret until the end of the game, then they go round by round to see when people dealt. Highest person wins the money they dealt at (or the case- a tie is a tie, and those tied win).

It was a good show. I’ll watch tonight, but the show I am really looking forward to is tomorrow night’s “Deal Wheel” two-hour affair. Potential for big payoffs and to see DOND’s best new wrinkle (we hope) in action.

I suprisingly agree with Alex, I loved the concept last night, just a correct picking of contestants would be good, as it is with poker… Have a rock (aka conservative, a moderate (normal player) and maniac (willing to take it to the end) and it be superb :)

I watched tonights and I liked it even better the home viewer got to see what was in some cases before the audience, contestant and Howie could see what was in it. Tonights was good but the contestant in the first game was too over the top. Tomorrow night will be even better with the deal wheel i feel.

Yeah, that first contestant from tonight’s episode will go down as one of the most Annoying Contestants ever. That scream was the loudest thing I have ever heard. And then you had the Orchestra on set which made the show even louder. I am glad she took that Deal, because I was about to turn the channel.
Tomorrow’s episode does look good though.

I watched Tuesday night’s episode…one question…was there even a game during the first part of it? Oh wait…that’s right…there was…it was just saturated with a show-tune atmosphere. I’m glad she got her dream…but, come on…it was DOND…not Broadway…Broadway has a great place in a lot people’s hearts…but don’t mix the 2 things.
I did like the audience reveal…especially the method in which it was done…but, I am also glad they didn’t saturate the show with it. It would’ve made the game for the MANY people who play along at home…including myself.
I’m watching tonight (Wednesday)…but, from what I’ve seen…I have to agree…it does look like the producers of DOND are trying to bring in Plinko. Leave it alone, already…SHEESH!

Question can a show that jumped the shark, jump back out of the tank and be fine? Time will tell
on a different note but still NBC, I have the Singing Bee on next Friday night 12/21, anyone else see this?

Also for all the griping I here on here about gimmicks, its doing what its meant to, and thats to get folks to watch. Case in point, many here who said this week is the first they watched all year… Endemol/NBC done its job with the gimmicks lol

I liked the Case reveal, but not that it was a quickie like that - ie, we’d find out after the break anyways. I think it would be interesting to show us, the home viewersm he contents of the case the conestant selects outright, sort of in the the vein of “David will wil whisper his secret to me while we show our audience at home.” Of course, give the home viewers a warning and only do it once at the beginiing of the show. I think it would really increase the show’s all important yell at the stupid contestant factor.

That orchestra music on that one game on DOND last night threw me back in time. It was like DEAL OR NO DEAL meets NAME THAT TUNE! It was still an enjoyable game and a fantastic deal she took away with!

Let’s just hope the “Plinko” meets “Wheel of Fortune” part of the game stays on. This could make the game very interesting. Or how about Door #4 (ANLMAD)?

I didn’t get to see the first show, sounds like a missed a good game darn! last night was passable. the home viewer would ahve made more sense to me if they revealed the contestant’s case (like Neville said) and maybe do an “x-ray vision effect” on the odd case not necessarily ones the contestant picks (picture what they do for the mystery space on WOF). The orchestra looked really forced and came across as annoying quickly and there was no suspense for the last offer of the “wicked” package (which she took) they hyped it so badly that there was no way she’d turn that down.
so it seems like their batting .500 so far this week we’ll see if they get to .666 (eerie huh?) tonight.

Wow! Loved the Deal Wheel! THAT added a new aspect to the game that I really liked. As the ball moved from the 3X deal to the 1/2 deal and to other spaces, it was a scene where you didn’t take your eyes off the screen.
Loved it! Wish they would have the Deal Wheel on more often.

Tonight is the best episode of Deal I’ve seen in a while. I enjoyed that Deal Wheel. I want to see the deal wheel more often. That wheel had me going kept thinking he’d having 3x 2x or lose half and i kept watching where that ball kept going. The contestants to me weren’t over the top which is what I am wanting to see more on Deal. I can live with the same gameplay meaning no deal wheel or winner take all if there were a lot less over the top contestants but this has me more hooked than ever. I hope to see a 4th and 5th season of primetime version of Deal especially if there is the deal wheel.

I didn’t really like “Winner Takes All”, personally, mainly because one cannot play a smart game. On the other hand, I like the Deal Wheel. Much better than “Double or Nothing”. The only suggestion I have in that regard is that I wish the contestants were able to opt out.
Meanwhile, the first woman on Monday’s episode was very grating. I had to watch her portion with the mute button on most of the time because her voice = nails on a chalkboard to me. Not only that; I was rooting for her to win very little. (A first for me. Most times I’m indifferent, unless I really like someone.) The other two were a bit of alright, though (even the one with the crazy shirt).
Tuesday’s episode…err, I could take it or leave it.
Tonight’s was good. The contestants were excited without being annoying as hell. More of those types, please. *nods*

I haven’t watched DOND for probably over a year, if not longer! This got me watching this week (or I should say Tuesday and Wednesday… forgot about the show on Monday).
I think I would have liked the Winner Take All. Strategy is involved and Alex is right. Strategy is something that’s missing from shows like Deal.
Night 2 was fun, but the reveal to the home viewer was POINTLESS! I thought that they were going to do an x-ray effect or show select cases before the game and let us root for them not to pick / pick them. I kinda liked the themed showtunes thing. (Not into showtunes at all, by the way!)
Night 3 was phenomenal! By far it is the best DOND I’ve ever watched. The first contestant was great and emotional and fun. The second guy was hilarious with him chasing Howie all around the stage. I actually laughed out loud. The wheel was exciting, too! The fact that it could land and then come back out of the space was really cool. You got excited when it hit 3x, then when it hit 1/2x you wanted it to fall back out… GREAT!
If the deal wheel returns, I may be watching it a little more often!

The Deal Wheel I believe and winner takes all are the two things that Deal needs to have. More for the deal wheel but once in a while you could have a winner take all game to make it different once in a while. The contestants last night were great and the first and third one on Monday night were good but that second contestant who screamed i had to turn down my tv set and the lady tuesday night was a little over the top for me. All in all though this was a great three night What’s The Deal run. I want to see a lot more of the deal wheel.

I thought the wheel was OK…although I was thinking of Plinko the whole time. The thing I didn’t like, though, was that the contestants *had* to spin it…in my opinion, they should’ve had the choice.
The wheel was the only gimmick I kinda liked…I just hope they don’t have it all the time…and get back to playing DOND.

Well, I like the “Winner Take All” version, likely to like the “Instant home viewing” Version (Even though it had the best Lucky case game with 4 cases instead of 6), and DEFINITELY like the “Deal Wheel” version. If DOND combined the “WTA” and “DW” at the same time, that would get you watching it again!

the option needs to be put!
if efren had won the 1M, i can’t imagine he would, every time, play a game with a 1/3 chance of losing 500K, whatever the rewards were.
Greg
33December 14th, 2007 at 1:28 pm
It seems pointless to have the contestant spin the wheel, run up the stairs, and drop the ball.
It would be a lot more exciting if one of the models spun the wheel and the contestant drop the ball. The ball would be in play longer.
And for comment #31, how about “Winner Take All” AND “Deal Wheel”?
Scott Meckley
34December 14th, 2007 at 4:29 pm
that is an interesting idea Greg. Expanding upon that idea I think that you ought to get to pick which model that you want to spin the wheel. If they did do the deal wheel a lot more you could add that to make it new later on. I have another idea that they could add at the end of the game. There are seven cases and five of them have money amounts in them $1,000 $5,000 $10,000 $25,000 $50,000 and two of them will cost you money one is lose half and the other is lose ten percent. This idea though ought to be an option to where a contestant wants to risk trying to add this money or keep what they have. I think most people would play this which beats double or nothing.
