Weekend Replay: “Gambit”

We have a new name which makes it special in some bizarre way I suppose. Anyway, this one came from a great suggestion from reader Travis E. who runs a website which features a page showing nearly every game show contestant who has won at least $100,000. Take a look here. I’ve talked about how GSN’s new game show Catch-21 and I’ve said it’s basically a retooled revival of Gambit with a new end game, but I never showed anything about Gambit. I don’t know classics really, and I’ve never seen the show, so I figured today would be a good day to show you a clip of Gambit. Enjoy.

Alex all I can say here is THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH! This really put a smile on my face and alot of sentimentality! I felt like I was back in 1974 once again! THANK YOU ALEX!

^^ Oh so this was 1974. I was wondering what year that was.

I never got to see Gambit before and now that I’ve seen it, I loved it.

I just have to say that Gambit is my all-time favorite game show, and thank you for posting this! I really wanted to see a decent clip of it. Also, the +$100,000 Club website is very interesting and cool. Thanks for posting the link too, Alex!

If I may, I’d like to offer some info on GAMBIT, for the benefit of Alex, and anyone else who until now, is unfamiliar with this classic.

GAMBIT premiered on CBS, 9/4/72, as part of a bloc of new game shows, which included THE JOKER’S WILD, and THE (NEW) PRICE IS RIGHT (as it was initially known). It ran for roughly four years, along with a short run (or, should I say, rerun)in 1977. By now, you know Wink Martindale emcee’d. The “dealer” was Elaine Stewart, who was a 1940’s-50’s-era B-movie actress, and something of a “hottie” in her day; she is also married to Merrill Heatter, who co-created the show. In 1980, the show was revived for NBC as LAS VEGAS GAMBIT, since this time, it eminated from the Tropicana Hotel in Vegas. This time, however, its run was roughly 13 months.

OMG! Wink’s TV test pattern leisure suit jacket really takes me back. Seriously, I love looking at these old game shows and this was one of my favorites. I liked GSN better when they showed all of the classic games. Thanks.
