Weekend Replay: Dutch “Deal or No Deal”

I enjoyed NBC’s version of Deal or No Deal for the first year or so, but the original is still the best.  The original version, the Dutch Miljoenenjacht, celebrates its tenth year on the air this week, and it’s easy to see why.  The giant event caused by the five million euro giveaway and its limited run just twice a year makes it one of the best event programs I’ve seen.  The show got its first ever major makeover for this season beginning on November 15th.

The set was given a slight update to include a bit more of the American look while still retaining the giant arena look.  It’s the best looking and most grand looking version of the show bar none.  The theme music and graphics were also given an upgrade to retain the classic look while updating it for 2010.  Additionally they got rid of contestants guessing the values of cases and stuck with models opening them.  But the core of the game remains the same.  An audience of 500 contestants is narrowed down to one through a series of quiz rounds, and that person plays for the major prize.  This weekend featured an exciting ending.  Take a look at it below.  Also included is the new opening and updated theme music. I’d still love to see a giant event show like this in America.

Kinda of odd how you’re posting this now rather than last week when the new changes came. At first, I didn’t like how they changed up the end game, they made the models opening up the cases pretty dull and worse than America did (who did do a good job with it), but it got better this week. I personally enjoyed the original case game more which they still had earlier in the year, now THAT was the best version of DOND worldwide!

I have to agree with the new looks and music. They’re awesome! Yet, I Like the contestant games more. Adds some fun and interest to the game. I’d love to see DOND again (NBC or ABC is available for this) yet this format is more interesting

(SPOILER) I thought the E 0,20 would be one of the final two, but still a good spread…

Looking at the new set, it looks like they upgraded to 1000 people in the audience this time around. Gigantic indeed…

Did anyone notice the No. 4 case had the money written upside down? Worth a laugh!

To call this tosh better than the UK version of DOND, is a joke to say the least.

The UK and Dutch versions are completely different from each other. The UK version is excellent as a daily daytime game show. But the Dutch version is really great to watch, because it gives a crapload of money on a show that is barely seen most of the year.

Wow. Just wow. Anything eise would spoil the video.

And that’s how the Netherlands removed their account of Contestants Opening Cases to make way for Models opening cases, what’s next Australia i hope it will happen in 2011 when the american rules comes to australia.

If ‘Who Wants to Be a Super Millionaire’ showed us that it could offer $10 million US, I think the ‘Miljoenenjacht’ format would definitely work in the US (maybe as ‘Multi-Million Deal or No Deal’ or something). The trick is threefold. (1) An American version needs to offer a huge wad of money, with gameplay that’s tricky, or at least deceptively simple, but not entirely unwinable. (2) To pace the show and only air it as an event program once or twice a year, as they do with ‘Miljoenenjacht’ in the Netherlands and ‘Millionaire’ in the UK. But as recent history has shown us, the Americans are more likely to milk it for all it’s worth upfront and run it into the ground (or at least, back into a low-budget daytime clone of itself). (3) Make the host less annoying and have him quit procrastinating with drawn out babble followed by sudden commercial break segues just as it gets really good (sorry, Howie).

Trivia: ‘Miljoenenjacht’ host Linda de Mol is the wife of the man who founded the Endemol game show company.
