Weekend Replay: “101 Ways to Leave a Game Show”

Yesterday on BBC One was the debut of Endemol’s new game show 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show.  An American pilot is being made soon for ABC so we wanted to be sure to keep a close eye on this one.  Really, it’s a mixed bag.  The actual game is OK but wow is it slow.  Actually this is one thing that will benefit an American pilot.  The British version is a full hour long.  The American version will only be around 42 minutes so a lot of the filler will be erased.  The show as simple as it sounds.  If you get a wrong answer you get ejected from the game.  Here’s the final round.  It’s basically Russian Roulette for £10,000.

Someone just needs to bring back Russian Roulette and get it over with.  All these shows like this are basically doing the same thing and none has worked as well as Roulette.  It’s amazing how before its time it was.

I get what you are saying about the pacing. i would think that the speed of an American version would speed up, just based on conversational style, as the British seem to have a naturally slower more sophisticated speaking pattern.

i liked this when i watched it though. After seeing some of the various ejections, it does seem like a fun show.

It’s funny how “Russian Roulette” gets brought up so much, when that show never really became a big hit. i was a huge fan of that and would love for it to be remade. i actually worked with Mark Wahlberg on a pilot a few years ago, and of course, that was the show we spent some time talking about.

I know ABC is trying out a bunch of different hosts for this show, so it will be interesting to see who they go with.

I rather like the game, graphics, and set, but the theme and pacing are absolutely horrifying.

Here’s another factor that I don’t know if anyone’s brought up yet: yes, the pace is horribly slow. That’s already one strike against it, but I find that a big difference between this and RR is that on RR, the contestant drops so fast and then disappears. There’s no knowing what they land on (or in, in this case), and that was part of the allure of the show–wondering where they go. The anticipation of the drop was also done very well on RR–the wheel spinning fast and then slowing down, but not to the point where it would become painfully slow like it does here.

The pacing is way too slow here, but the exit is fun. This could work well in the US at a faster pace and the right host. Way better than the trash that passes for game shows these days, like Wipeout. And, why NOT Mark Wahlberg?

I beg to differ on Wipeout – I quite enjoy the half-campy half-serious tone the show has, and having been a big fan of MXC, I can see why :)

Judging by what I have seen here, this might work here, but with considerable tweaking.

First off, speed up the (CENSORED)

  • James E. Parten says:

    Let’s try that again. . .

First off, speed up the (CENSORED) pace! Get a host that can count in Earth seconds, not those of the planet Jupiter!

Secondly, try to figure out ways of expelling losing contestants that do not wind up being theme and variations on Taking the Plunge!

Finding a host should be easy. I haven’t seen Mark Wahlberg at work, but Chris Jericho might fit this show quite nicely.

    • Ryan Z says:

Technically the Jovian day is more than twice as fast as Earth’s, so if the second were to be proportional to a day at the same ratio as seconds per day on Earth, then he would be counting much more quickly.

I would estimate that he is going more like the pace of a Neptunian second. *runs far away*

  • Joe Birdsong says:

Slow pacing for sure, but can be fun summer fare. I think this might be the perfect compliment to Wipeout on a summer schedule.

Chris Jericho is so suited for a show like this. It’s a little extreme, and very theatrical. Those are two qualities Jericho does well.

Here’s another hosting option, since I’m pretty sure he hasn’t done anything in awhile…

    Bam Margera.

His Jackass background fits the bill for an extreme stunt oriented show, and he has a genuinely friendly demeanor when interviewed. Plus he can add a little bit of a wicked smirk to the rounds. I think his demeanor could also assist pacing, which is just dreadful here. just a thought.

Studio execs, I know you’re reading this… make some phone calls.

  • Ryan Z says:

It’s slow, but fun. I’d like to see who we get as host, and if this gets picked up (which hopefully it does), it’d be the perfect pairing to Wipeout if Downfall doesn’t have a new season. (And quite frankly, it doesn’t seem like it – despite me loving the show.) I agree that the pacing is slow, and I think we could do away with the countdown as well.

  • LaJuan says:

Alex, you’re right. Just bring back RR.
