Why do I have a feeling that we’re on the road for another Chair/Chamber situation? FOX is rushing their ripoff of NBC’s The Singing Bee to tape. Don’t Forget the Lyrics, FOX’s new song identification show, will be taped on June 19th through the 21st and hosted by Whose Line is it Anyway cast member Wayne Brady. If you would like to see the show and live in LA, click here to get tickets. This is some information given to us by a casting person:
10 songs…10 missing lyrics…One Million Dollars. Don’t Forget The Lyrics! has the perfect mix of nostalgia and cool factor. Like Karaoke on steroids, our contestants take center stage to sing along as the lyrics are projected and our studio band provides the music. Suddenly, the music stops and the words disappear. Will our contestant belt out the correct missing lyric or will they freeze under the pressure of the bright lights and studio audience? With each correct lyric, our contestant must decide to “stay & play” or “take the money & run.” As our contestant climbs the money chart, the songs become more popular but the missing lyrics become more difficult. When a contestant is unsure of missing lyrics, they can use any one of three helplines to aid them. In Which Line Works?, the contestant is given three possible missing lyrics. One is correct and two are incorrect. In Friends & Family, the contestant can ask their in-studio guests for help in completing the missing lyric. In Scratch The Record, their originally selected song is thrown out and a new song is provided from the same category. So sit back, turn up the volume, and get ready to sing along to the biggest hit songs of all time! But, if you want to be successful in this game, there is one thing you have to remember… DON’T FORGET THE LYRICS!
I love that we’ve combined 1 VS 100’s Helps and Millionaire’s Lifelines to get Helplines. This show doesn’t seem absolutely dreadful so far though, which is a step up for most FOX shows. Although, can someone please tell me what is so appealing about Wayne Brady? I thought he was the biggest waste of time on Whose Line. His only skill was singing, and that didn’t save him on the show at all since it was a comedy. For the most part he lacked the comedy aspect. I’m guessing the singing is one of the sole reasons he was casted to host. Regardless, what do you all think about this show so far?

I’m prolly gonna catch a lot of heat for this, but I was never a big fan of Wayne or “Whose Line”. I just never understood the humor in it; I got the premise, just never humored me that much. However, I know people who loved it, and Wayne was usually the favorite.
However, I gained a whole new level of respect for him after the infamous “Chappelle’s Show” sketch lol.

Fox doesn’t have a creative bone in its body. All Fox can seem to do anymore is steal other network’s ideas, ultimately killing both shows. The last truly innovative show Fox has put on the air is 24. Everything else is inferior crap or derivative crap. Hell, they put all of their really creative shows on FX.
BTW: LOVED Whose Line…but it was better in Britain. Colin & Ryan rocked!

On the surface, this sounds like a very good combo of Name That Tune and Millionaire, but of course we have to mention that Fox is kinda ripping off “The singing Bee” from NBC. Still, both shows have good concepts and I hope that at least one of these shows succeeds. It’s been a while since we’ve had a real good musical gameshow. Also, I still hope CBS will churn out the new version of Name That Tune.

Music-based gameshows seem like they’d be too niched for a network channel. Then again, with enough nostalgia mixed in it could float.

If you think Wayne Brady’s only talent on Whose Line was singing, you’ve obviously not seen him do weird newscasters. He cracked me up everytime he did that game!

You should be ashamed to be dissin’ Wayne Brady like that! ;)
He was definately a needed addition to the Whose Line crew, and the guy has amazing vocal abilities to boot..
What sucks is I’ll get there RIGHT AFTER the show is done taping it’s first episode block..

You must be out of your mind. Wayne Brady is one of the most multi-talented people in show business. I will be curious to see how he does as a game show host.

Wayne Brady did “Duets” last year so FOX is giving him another music themed show. He should have had a tryout for being Bob Barker’s successor if he’s one of the most multi-talented people in show business. Wayne Brady should be Bob Barker’s successor.

Wow Alex. I read it again and I, too, am utterly shocked. Wayne Brady is one of the best comedic and musical talents in television today. Whose Line would have never been complete without him. Colin and Ryan are superb, but Wayne gave the show an extra dimension that kept it fresh and hilarious for everyone.

I’m sorry, I know I’m the huge minority, but he just wasn’t funny to me at all. He was always afraid to do anything outrageous and dirty. Whose Line was a raw and dirty show, and he held that back. I really preferred Brad Sherwood more than anyone. He was extremely funny and was good at the singing. Of course I would have rather had Greg Proops for sheer comedic genius, but that’s away. I saw him do Weird Newscasters (Trust me, I watch the show religiously and have the DVDs of the US and UK version), and he is occasionally funny, but the rest of the time he just makes me cringe. Again, he wasn’t my taste. I enjoyed the dirty and unreal stuff the show did in the later seasons. He just didn’t seem to fit.
And yes, I did see him on Chappelle’s Show. That’s the single time I’ve ever felt anything he’s done was good. That was hysterical. Well, I did enjoy his ABC variety show for the sole reason of Missi Pyle.

Wayne Brady was funny. He’s probably not the best person for the job, but I’m OK with him as host.
Either way, if you watch someone singing and then the music stops, how are you going to get into the show? You might see your favorite song playing, and you start singing along and…o its done. That bothers me. Whatever. I’m not ditching the show yet, I’ll give it a chance…let’s see…

Don’t diss Wayne Brady. He is a good singer, has hosted TV talk shows and Duets, and IS funny ! He will be the perfect host for a show like this… sorry to disagree with you…

I hope the premiere date could be sometime in August when “So You Think You Can Dance” ends their season?

Is this show trying to steal ideas from so many others that it looks original? The ‘helplines’ name has cracked me up completely.
Wonder if anyone will win the million on this. The hilarious thing about this network game show boom is that so far it’s created 0 million-dollar wins to date.

Also heres some things to expect…
—————–
*Huge Audience Expected (500+) to add tension to the contestant on stage
*The Contestant gets a microphone in hand, instead of a normal “wired-on” mike.
*The ‘”Band” will be in the background
*Set would seem a bit like “american idol” meets Deal or No Deal
(the projector with those “color pillars”)
*Wayne will sing the lyrics, along with “Special Guest” singers.

Well David, That can, and at some point will change! Also, you forget there that there has been a few top prize winners on some shows (Identity comes to mind) and there have been plenty of big winners.
Trust me, there will be more $1,000,000 (or more) winners in the future.

I got to see the show taped a couple of days ago and I had a ton of fun, wishing I could get up and play. Brady was great, giving an indication of a show that looks like its gonna be around a while. It looked and had the feel of American Idol, even using the same band idol uses. I know a lot of songs and thought winning the million would be a breeze. I quickly found I didn’t quite know the lyrics to everything… Even in some of the most popular songs ever. I have a strong feeling America is gonna love this one.

I think this is how to get on.

[...] FOX’s Don’t Forget the Lyrics! has just one contestant at a time. They have to sing back lyrics as well. However, of course there’s now a money chain and three “Helplines”. Nice way to combine Millionaire’s lifelines and 1 VS 100’s Helps. It only takes 10 songs to win a million. The first is worth $2,500; then $5,000; $10,000; $25,000; $50,000; $100,000; $200,000; $350,000; $500,000; and the million. The rules we were given can be found here. [...]
