USA Today Talks to Carey about “Price is Right”

Have I ever told you how excited I am, as a person who’s not really that much of a fan of The Price is Right, to have Drew Carey hosting it (who I am a fan of)? I have? William Keck of USA Today published an interview with Mr. Carey today, and it made me even more excited. You can read it here.

The spark notes version: Power of 10 is sticking in New York City, so he flies back and forth often. The studio is still being called Bob Barker Studio and the games with his name on it stay. Drew keeps some of his trademark style of humor during the show, like making fun of some of the dumb prizes and poking fun at contestants and models. The models don’t have a nickname anymore, that of which I’m happy about. Carey is signed to a five year contract right now. The show will be traveling. Finally, he wants some guest models, like USA Women’s National Soccer team (Drew is a big fan; they are making a soccer based game for him that won’t involve skill, god forbid that) and Kathy Kinney, AKA Mimi from Drew Carey’s sitcom. He wants more guests as well.

I have a huge feeling that the, for lack of a better term, obsessive and sometimes creepy Price is Right fanatics are going to go crazy about Mimi and other guests doing some modeling items, but at least to me, a person who really does not care for the show that much, it makes it more fun for me. I don’t find pricing a ceramic pig to be amusing or a good time. Bringing in some fun, excitement, and a bit of improv with some guest models will liven it up much more in my eyes. However for quite a few of you, be rest assured, the show will stay basically the same with a few changes to fit Carey’s style; a style I cannot wait to see next Monday.

I will actually start watching TPIR again after many years. The news just keeps getting better.

Drew’s got big shoes to fill. I hope he can fill them. I also hope Bob will make a guest appearance once in a while.

As much as I love Bob, the last few years were a little worn-out. The show needed a revitalization, a new start of sorts. Drew and the changes accompanying him seem like just the ticket.

This should be interesting. Maybe having Drew as host of this show may actually generate interest in daytime tv again. With the exception of this show, network daytime game shows had all but disappeared by 1994. The rest were in syndication or on cable. Who knows? This could be a revival of sorts. I don’t know. I’m just guessing.

The more and more I read about Drew and TPIR, the more excited I get. For the first time in about 10 years, TPIR might become must-see TV for me again! :D

While only slightly concerned about Drew’s slight misnaming of some of the pricing games, this is nitpicky (especially since he’s still about a month or two into the show), and should not concern anybody except for the anal retentive TPIR fanbois who are already balking at Drew’s entrance. The show needed a revitalization, the show needed some modernization, and Drew seems to be expediting all of this quite well. His attitude towards keeping the show moving forward is the right one, and shows he does “get it.”

As for going on the road, this is a concept that is about 15 years overdue for TPIR, and something which has had the potential for generating great publicity for it. Having more massive audiences, and those with a wider geographical spread, at a taping, with more potential contestants to choose from (and that much more cheering at the stage), will be fun to watch. Drew still being a young guy with a lot of energy, he’d handle such an undertaking so much more better than Barker, and he’d be much better at hosting the show under multiple different scenarios and situations also better than Barker, such as being in a different setting, given how Barker’s been doing more of the same thing every episode since the late 80’s.

Again, props to Drew, I support him 100%, and I will be anxious to see his debut on Monday!

OH, and BTW, IT’S ABOUT DAMN TIME TPIR’S HOST MADE FUN OF THOSE DUMBASS PRIZES! :D

If they can handle the transition well, this will work. By the looks of things, they’re handling it well.

Having a new pricing game with Carey’s stamp on it is a smart idea. Referring to the models individually without a collective name (though the ‘Carey’s Cuties’ suggestion was kinda neat) seems good to me.

Perhaps this evolutionary step will gain a new cult following. If the Barker-era viewers mostly hang around as well, and I don’t doubt they will, this’ll work out great for CBS.

that soccer themed game unnerves me…gives me on the nose flashbacks.

dont mind guests in the showcases, those could be fun…the “prizes revealed” skits were getting stale…i remember in the old days they used to have guests show up…however seeing more mia shamm will make me puke on general principles.

However i draw the line at Mimi…it takes away from drew the person and turns him back into his sitcom character.

You mean like the replica gas pump, the sunburst floor clock, the sofa shaped like a pair of woman’s lips, The DREADED LOBSTER TENNIS MACHINE! :p

Yes, it’s about time someone told it like it was with the “undesirable” prizes! Look, I don’t care how Bob and the contestants never really said anything or showed their real feelings for them, but let’s be honest, I know they felt ridiculous playing for stuff like that!
