Updated Games and Huge Money for “The Price is Right” Starting September 20th
The Price is Right will be getting even more energy injected into its record 39th season starting September 20th. Yes, the only change isn’t Drew Carey’s weight loss. Huge new games and surprises are in store for contestants and audiences in the new season. First of all, we already know about the rotating guest announcers which will go on for a bit. However, the show’s newest game, “Pay the Rent”, has finally been confirmed. As stated quite some time ago the game will attempt to give away $100,000. It’s the biggest money game the show has. It’s a multi-tiered pricing game and more detail will be out about it soon.
I’m expecting the Doom Train to pull out of the station with some of the more “enthusiastic” fans upon news that some classics are going to be updated to fit technology from 2005, which is nice for a show in 2010. The games “Ten Chances” and “Plinko” are singled out. Not only are they just updated to fit times but apparently they are “elevated” somehow for even more excitement. I have no clue what that means at all. Some countries allow you to gamble your Plinko winnings on one final chip for an additional prize. Maybe we’ll be seeing that? We’ll hunt down information for that.
The Price is Right is finally doing something they should have done for a long time as well. The models are going to be mic’d, and they will be able to interact with the host and contestants. Smart move. It’s 2010, give them some personality. Shows like Deal or No Deal and Let’s Make A Deal showed that it can work really well. The models on Price seem to have a lot of personality from the miming they’ve done seemingly forever. Let’s hear what they have to say also.
The new season of The Price is Right starts September 20th on CBS.

YES! Mic’ing the models is WIN. :D
While some people are thinking micing the models is the end of the world, it actually would be a good idea to give the models more of a chance to let their personality shine.
Remember on the old TPIR, Janice would always talk a little bit. Remember the magic putt and when she broke the van’s door in Lucky 7? Nice add
The critical thing to remember, however, is that Let’s Make a Deal has only three personalities on the stage at any one time (host, announcer, model) to interact verbally with the contestant. I found Deal or No Deal’s attempts at ‘model chat’ to be utterly chaotic (though this may be just as much the result of overscripting the entire show as much as it is that there were 26 of them) but I really don’t have a good feeling about five people fighting for the spotlight on a show like this.
I hear you on that one, Nando. If you want to see different people fighting for the spotlight, watch “The View”, or even worse, “The Talk” (CBS, are you listening?), which will have six people fighting for the spotlight. Let’s all hope that “The Talk” fails and they bring another game show to their daytime lineup.
In the interest of fairness, though, there are formats where having so many people on the stage at once does work. I just don’t think this is one of them.
Yeah. I don’t like the miking at all. Yes, we can give them some personality, but frankly, all a model is supposed to be there for is eye candy to make the prizes look better. That’s essentially it. I could care less what a model has to say. They were hired because they are pretty, not because they have good senses of humor.
On the other points…”elevated” has me scared. How can they “elevate” Ten Chances? I understand how they can bring an element used in Plinko in other countries, but many of those same countries don’t play the game for money. In the UK, Plinko is played for a car. It doesn’t have the grandeur that the game has in the US. That being said, I think you just up the dollar values a bit and leave it at that. In the US, most people are just happy to play the game. Hell, I’d be happy to get $0 of Plinko just to say that I played Plinko on the show and had a chip in my hands. I still think the show needs no changes. Yeah, bring in a few new games. That’s all I need to see. Other than that, I’m happy with seeing the same show I watched my whole life, and not what they’re trotting out there now produced by people who have no idea what they’re doing.
Sorry, I’m just a loyal friend and true, and wish they had never messed with the show at all. Never should have fired Roger. he knew how the show was supposed to be run. If there is a supposed “Doom Train” where can I buy a ticket? That’s a train I’ve wanted to ride for a few years now.
Plinko in the UK’s played for money, with a second gamble for a car/more money.
My mistake. I thought it was just played for a car.
So if you’ve been wanting to ride the doom train for a few years, that must mean with all the changes, it never really left the station. I’m guessing it will stay put a little while longer.
This has been Julia’s schtick for a while here. Something new gets announced, and she hates it.
“Elevated” just sounds like so much PR talk that it’s meaningless.
Price is Right Turned into a Variety Show, I Will not watch.
Before time cuts sent Price to 38 minutes (it had been as long as 45 minutes), there were segments, especially after Most Expen$ive, where Bob and the models would have a conversation. There seems to be a push to bring back model conversations online, but more chatter with the models keeps with Drew’s team concept.
Plinko is replacing the eggcrate with a plasma. That’s confirmed.
My only issue is the whole “elevated” thing. Everything else (in this post) I’m fine with, but this elevation thing has me grabbing the Pepto.
Ten Chances is probably going to make an obvious change: no more pen-and-paper-with-mechanical-buttons-setup. Hopefully it will still be something as nicely visual and active as the long 10-button board, because approaching your last chance with the car was something entertaining, and it also made it clear when you could no longer possibly win it.
There’s a video @ Priceisright.com detailing the physical changes made to these games. I can assure you 10 Chances looks like it functions the same way as the old board, it just got a blue & yellow paint job.
I’ll let most of you remain firmly planted in 1972. I respect your opinions, despite being incredibly narrow-minded.
I will be looking forward to the new season. I could care less that the models will be miked or there will be rotating announcers. I want to see the additions, improvements, and whatever it is they have done to finally get the show out of the dark ages. Yes, I said it.
Well, through all the changes; I say get ready for a roller coaster ride on the Price is Right.
I’m hoping that “Ten Chances” will get rid of its “zero rule” and stop having all of its prizes end in zero. Compter screens will make it more modern. Is “Check Game” going to get updated as well, or have they decided to retire “Check Game” and is “Credit Card” still on hiadus or is “Credit Card” retired?
Getting rid of the “zero rule” in Ten Chances would just be stupid. It’d make the game impossible to win.
Why would they rid the “ends in zero” rule? Unless you’re a fan of permutations and combinations, the zero rule reduces the infinite number combinations and permutations for the price of the small prize, the medium prize, and the car.
Not to mention, this rule has never been explicitly on the show, so why rid it? It also makes for funny moments on the show (and many occurrences of broken TVs, I suppose, lol) when a contestant doesn’t seem to understand that all the prizes end in 0 (and in rare instances, 5).
This game should be about knowing how to play smart, and not a game of luck where hopefully the numbers I write down are in the right order. That’s just my two cents. :)
I normally wait until I actually see the show to comment on changes, but I did get a sneak peek of the new Ten Chances board via…(scoff) that OTHER website (scoff)…and I really, really, REALLY liked it.
I can’t believe they used that incredibly ugly board to start with, nor can I believe that it took them this long to change it. (It debuted in July of 1975!) Nor can I believe that people are protesting the change. W.T.F.? =P
As for everything else…like I said, I’m waiting for Season 39 to start.
By the way, I’ve tossed around in my head an idea for a fanfic called “Alex’s Price is Right” (imaginative name, huh? xD) for quite a while, and it had a changed Ten Chances board as early as 2003. Just a little fun fact, there…! ^^
Any word on Rich Field’s replacement yet? As for the models Rachel, Lanisha, Gwendolyn, Amber, and Maneula (please forgive me if I spell these names wrong) will be back, I wonder if Brandi is going to return this season after being out on maternity leave last year? Brandi is my favorite model, followed by Rachel.
A bit late, but…
Brandi’s no longer with the show. She was fired back in February and is suing. (Read the archives!)
