UK Weekend Replay: Million Pound Drop Drama

Channel 4′s The Million Pound Drop Live will wrap up their fifth series tonight. Over the course of the last six weekends, it has produced many high scoring payouts with couples winning £200,000 and more. Endemol and Channel 4 have given away more than £1 million throughout this series. More money than the last four series and Christmas specials added together. Today we have two clips from this series. The first clip was taken from 24th September and features comedian Jack Whitehall and his father, Michael Whitehall. Unlike other game shows, celebrity games are always slotted between regular games. The generation pair have reached question eight with a record £300,000. Watch the clip below to see them tackle the final 50/50 question.

The second clip was taken from last Saturday’s edition. What you will see caused much discussion over UK discussion groups due to the question that was asked and what the couple decided to choose between the four options. All I will say before you watch the clip is whether you can answer the same question within sixty seconds.

saying it’s a record £300,000 is a stretch considering one couple got to the 8th question with £525,000.

and I did manage to figure the 2nd question but it would have left me and my partner with about 15 seconds to move all the money (which would have been nearly impossible).

    • MikeSant318 says:

But that couple didn’t win the 525,000 ponds, did they?
Think Travis hid a spoiler in there (or maybe it’s a record for celebrity teams)…
Got the 2nd question right away (one of those know-it-or-you-don’t deals)…

    • Travis Penery says:

It’s a record for a celebrity pair to play on the final question. Any celebrity pairs who have reached the final question before had less than £100k.

It’s worth pointing out that Stuart didn’t even bother working out the answer. Saying he doesn’t know and ruled out one answer straight away. Leaving Kelly to wotk it out for both of them..

  • Narro87 says:

Maybe I’m just exceptional, but I got the calendar question in less than fifteen seconds…

    • Scott says:

I figured it out quickly as well. Since the first Friday had to be the 6th in the month for the following Friday to be the 13th, you just had to quickly run through Sunday 1, Monday 2, Tuesday 3, etc. until you reached Friday 6. And then you knew what the correct answer was. Much easier than some of the other questions on this show.

  • Zeus says:

Ooh, I like questions like the calendar one. Granted it’s a lot harder to think about how to work it out when you’re under that much pressure, but just the fact that you -can- work it out and it doesn’t have to be a total stab in the dark.

  • David says:

In the second clip, if they weren’t sure, Friday should have been the easiest to eliminate (Even if they miscounted Friday to Friday as 7 days and not 8, it would still have been short)- but under the stress of time pressure you never know what you might do…

  • Adam says:

I still wish OUR version would get more attention than the UK’s version still gets. Am I now glad I e-mailed Endemol USA with my frustrations about what I saw. Let’s all hope OUR version comes back in a better form than before.

  • Ardenfetz says:

Got the calendar one immediately, but I’d figured out that answer for myself a long time back.
It looked like they’re reasoned it out well enough and with a decent amount of time; their fatal flaw was in thinking the calendar week started on a Monday. I agree that Friday should have been easy to rule out if they’d focused on that.

It looks like Davina knew the answer though, or at least had it fed to her. She looked and sounded fairly heartbroken going through the motions once the clock had stopped.

  • djcchs2004 says:

Which is why the US version is better because of the Quick Change. The couple from the second clip could use it if this version did have that rule. That was the easy question.

  • Poochy.EXE says:

“All I will say before you watch the clip is whether you can answer the same question within sixty seconds.”

Yes. I had the correct answer before they even started the countdown, leaving me with the full 60 seconds to facepalm. Here’s how I thought through it:

13 is congruent to 6 and -1 modulo 7. So if the 13th is on Friday, the 6th and (supposing for a second that we can have non-positive numbers) the “-1st” would also have to be on Friday. Then the “0th” (still modulo 7) is on Saturday and the 1st is on Sunday.

    • Poochy.EXE says:

And immediately after writing the above comment, I just realized that there’s an even easier way to think through it: If the 13th is on Friday, then the 14th is on Saturday and the 15th is on Sunday. Subtract two full weeks from the 15th and you find that the 1st is also on Sunday. This is what I get for watching the clip and posting while half-asleep.

  • Artemis says:

Even just counting backwards takes only 20 seconds.

  • Artemis says:

So, what happened to the security guards on the 300k win? Kinda ruined the atmosphere just letting them walk out the wrong exit with the money in their hands.

  • Will says:

That calendar question wasn’t a challenge. If the pair had communicated instead of shoving money on the answers they might have salvaged some money.

  • Jose says:

I figured the question out with about 35 to 40 seconds left. Cause Subtract 7 you’d have Friday the sixth then work backwards from there.

  • Des Elmes says:

Just saw that second MPD clip for the first time.

    What can I say? D.U.M.B.O.S.

Had to laugh when Kelly said “sh*t”.

And I have to agree with Ardenfetz that it looked like Davina knew the answer and sounded fairly heartbroken after the time ran out…
