No US news at all today, but we will have a small preview of The Moment of Truth sometime next week. England has had a lot of fun game show news, though. One of my favorite shows that the US completely screwed up, Weakest Link, will be moving to the main BBC station next month. It’s been on BBC2 for quite a few years. The UK version is absolutely supreme to ours in nearly every way possible, and if you haven’t checked it out you really owe it to yourself.
Also, Duel starts its UK run on Saturday. The show is basically the same gameplay wise as our version, though they ditched the tournament. Probably a good move, as it just did not work here at all. I was bored until the final night (and even then still a bit bored), as hypothetical risks were being thrown around. Chips are worth £1,000 added to a jackpot which starts at £100,000. If you win two duels, you can stop with either potentially £10,000 or 10% of the jackpot. After three wins, you can stop with £20,000 or maybe 20% of the jackpot. If you win four duels, you win the entire jackpot. We’ll get a video of it for you next week hopefully.

I’m not quite sure I understand the prize system in duel… If I’m interpreting this right, a player can leave the game with 10k pounds or 10% of the jackpot… but if the jackpot starts at 100k pounds and grows, isn’t 10% of the jackpot always going to be above 10k? Does the player get the choice of the 10k or jackpot, or is it chosen for them some other way? Or am I missing some important detail that changes this?

I personally would like to see the U.S. Version of Duel come back but in a different style than before. There are ten people in the gallery to start the game two people from the gallery are selected and are set to play a best 2 out of 3 each game won is worth $25,000 ( whoever wins the 2 out of 3 match then his or her next duels are worth more money
1st duel won $25,000 ( total of $50,000)
2nd duel won $50,000 ( total of $100,000)
3rd duel won $100,000 ( total of $200,000)
4th duel won $250,000 ( total of $500,000)
5th and final duel won $500,000 (total of $1,000,000)
all five duels best 2 out of 3 total to be won $1,850,000)
also after the first duel is won then one of the remaining players will be selected from the gallery to play the champion ( after all ten from the gallery have been selected and have had a chance to play then new players will enter into the gallery) also I would like to see this be a once to twice a week event maybe on Tues and Fri I personally would like to see this come back around may or june and run for the summer but from the ratings during the week of christmas I’m not sure if it would but i think my idea for how they could do this would be exciting and interesting. So what do you think about my idea for Duel if it were to come back?

I really liked Duel although i admit the tournament format they used in the US was horrible and unfair to contestants who were never chosen and I was dissapointed with Mike Greenberg’s hosting he seemed really stiff IMO. I pitched a similar idea before for grand slam but, how about a round-robin format with 6 contestants, everyone faces everyone, wins mean contestants bank their remaining chips and $5,000 per chip, a loss gets 0 after these 30 matches (this would span 10 shows) the top 4 move on to the semi-finals with 1st facing 4th, 2nd facing 3rd, they each get only the chips they previously saved for each game. each semi-final is a best 2 of 3 with chips now worth $7,500. The two winners face off in the finals again playing playing with the number of chips they’ve saved up to that point. finals is a best 3 of 5 with the chips worth $10,000 each. winner takes the jackpot, runner-up gets a runner-up prize of $100,000 there would also be a third place match played for a flat $50,000.

Maybe it is just me but I feel when it come to game shows the Brits are superior to the US in so many ways. I am glad that you pointed out that the US version of Weakest Link was ultimately butchered although the UK version still lives on. That was a shame. Weakest Link was one of my favourite shows…but the moment they put George Gray as host that was the demise of the show. And lets not forget when they changed the format of the show (e.g. Getting rid of the double round) I actually lost interest in the show. I really hope that there is a revitilisation of Weakest Link with a GOOD host.
In regards to Duel, the format the UK is trying to develop sounds like it would be good to keep people interested. I have to be honest I missed two episodes during the Duel tourney and wasn’t that irritated by it. Which is odd coming from me — I used to get mad when I missed one episode of Millionaire back during the Regis days. The tourney set up was horrifying. I agree with Marc, Mike Greenberg (although he did improve slightly as the show went on) was a stiff during his hosting. I think if they change the format and get a new host maybe US Duel may have a change.

Just seen the UK opening episode.
All I shall say is that if the viewers have any sense, ITV have the next Millionaire on their hands.
Only one thing worries me, and that’s the fact there are some DoND producers mentioned in the credits. Please, please, PLEASE don’t let Duel go the same way our DoND has… especially as there’s a risk/reward element… please…
…though on tonight’s form, the host isn’t going to be anything like that.

I dont’ think Mike Greenburg was totally bad here is what i think on that I think the producers told him to say something short and then get on with the game. There to me was very little interaction with the contestants which I think you’ve got to at least spent a couple of minutes on that that is why i think my suggestion of how to bring back duel would be exciting and Mike Greenburg would hopefully get to be an exciting host like he does on his Mike and Mike In the Morning show. The jackpot part was ok but I just think that my idea would be better because then everyone would get the chance to play granted you may see many of the same players for episodes but at least everyone would get a fair chance to play and not be sitting in the gallery and not havig a chance to play. you would only see new gallery players after everyone in the gallery has played. Duel was a fun show especially having the ten chips and not knowing what your opponent would cover up and how many you want to cover up. Some of the questions were challenging which made the show very entertaining for me to watch. This game I feel needs to come back in the way i suggested because then it would actually show in order to win $1,850,000 you would have to beat 5 opponents.

Only seen pics. The UK set is horrible compared to the US one.

I think it works better in action.
And in reply to Steve, the (£10k/10% || £20k/20%) decision is complete luck.
All told, I’m just loving this show too much. Good thing I don’t have anything I want to go out for on Saturday nights…
