Channel4’s UK edition of Deal or No Deal has been fined £30,000 for a phone gam that is, according to regulators, “intrinsically unfair.” For people like me that said “Intrinsically? What the hell?”, it means “with respect to its inherent nature”. The phone game, which is pretaped, asks viewers to phone in for a small fee (or enter online for free) to enter a drawing to win the value of one of three boxes picked at the end of the show. Therefore, Channel4 and Endemol knew the outcome before the game came to a close. For the new season, the box selection for the phone game comes earlier. Also, early callers to the premium-rate competition on the hit show, presented by Noel Edmonds, had more chance of being selected than later callers and the majority of names selected were chosen before the lines closed. Channel4 has recently ceased all phone games except Deal or No Deal.  This is most likely because episodes were already taped with the box selection already in.  The new season of England’s Deal or No Deal begins Monday, August 13th on Channel4.
