Too bad. I was looking forward to watching the new Match Game until I read this. I refuse to watch anything with Sarah Silverman in it. I can't help but find it more than coincidental that her initials can also stand for Sick and Shameful.

The announcer introduced himself at the first taping so I missed his full name. He was a Mexican-American comedian named Gilbert.

This statement worries me a little. Still, I've been optimistic about this ever since Norm and Sarah were announced as panelists, and this report seems pretty encouraging. By the way, who was the announcer?

I attended the second pilot taping of MG on Thursday. I was expecting a whole new look, but lo and behold, it was the 1970's all over again. The set is a replica of MG7_, the great theme music has been revived as has the opening "Get ready to match the stars" copy. The only changes are the celebs and the Super-Match, which now asks the winner to answer five fill-ins in 30 secs for $1000 each, with the opportunity to replace two of his worst answers with a celeb response. Then the player can go for double his S-M winnings in the familiar head-to-head.

Norm McDonald is in the Dawson seat, Sarah Silverman in the Brett seat and Scott Thomas in the CNR seat. Super Dave Osborne, Rashida Jones and Niecy Nash were the other stars.

It was an entertaining show but I think the celebs were trying a bit too hard to be raunchy and boisterous. They will find their level in time.

Andy Daly was a fine host who kept the proceedings moving.

You're right about one thing, DENo1MatchGameFan. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Case in point, MG '98. They tried to make it more like Win Ben Stein's Money than they did the original Match Game. So if they go back to the original format (6 celebrity and A&B for catergories), I think it'll be alright no matter who the celebrities are.

As for Vicki Lawrence and Betty White coming to this version of "MG", I think Vicki learned her lesson from being on "MG '98", and Betty has too much class to come back to these newer versions of the show. Sarah Silverman seems as annoying as Judy Tenuta was to "MG '98", and Norm McDonald was never really that funny either - bet it will last a season or less like the last three retreads - if it ain't broke, don't keep trying to fix it!

Well, have you ever looked at usgameshows.net, and the failed Match Game pilots they tried before 98? Wow...very scary that 98 was the best of the bunch. One even had the contestants write their answer on a card, and had the celebs speak their answer. So, 98 wasn't so far off from the original. There were only a few problems with that version: A) 5 celebs, B) only %5000 bonus round when 18 years before you had a chance at $10,000 in the super match, C) cutesy names for categories instead of A or B, D) Judy Tenuta. Frankly, if they had upped the budget for $10000 for the bonus, added another celeb, stayed with A and B, and dropped Tenuta, the show would have been pretty good. At least the rest of the talent they got was OK.

On another topic, I'm looking forward to this. While GSM showed that Match Game could be done in this day and age, you still need the right nix of celebs. They were spot on with who they selected for GSM, and in my opinion created the best episode of the whole GSM series. They need Betty white for a few episodes, hopefully. Norm McDonald hasn't done much lately, but I thought that he was funny on SNL. Sarah Silverman, besides being Jimmy Kimmel's GF, isn't all that funny, IMO. But, you never know how some people will react when they are in a different vehicle. We shall see when it comes on TBS whether or not they got the right chemistry. And we shall know soon enough since it tapes today.

Fremantle did a nice job updating The Price Is Right's set when Drew Carey took over, leaving it familiar yet updated with newer lighting, color, and design.
If Fremantle replicates the blue/white I-beam set from 78-82, it won't be exactly the same but will be updated as much as possible without losing the feel.

I find it interesting that it'll be shot in Studio 58, next door to the Late Late Show. Not the traditional home downstairs in Studio 33, but if the Late Late Show needs to siphon audience members...

I have no idea who the host is, which is actually a good thing. It gives them a chance to cultivate new talent. Sarah Silverman and Norm McDonald's humor is more fitting for TBS late night and could be the next Brett and Charles. It is clear: Jay Wolpert isn't at the helm of this show. I think Fremantle (then Pearson) learned their lesson with the debacle that was 98-99.

I like the first two choices for celebs, but there is a ? on the host. But, he might turn out okay.

You also have to hope that the producers realize that the classic show worked because of the host and comedy Chemistry with the celebs. I mean, yes the contestants want to win the money, but as Mr. Rayburn said constantly in interviews, "It's a rotten format, but it worked because of the interaction between me and the celebrities."

If they can snag some of the celebs from the Live stage show that Jimmy Pardo hosts, this new version could rock. Some of the panelists have included Jeneane Garafalo, Paul F. Thompkins, Maria Bamford, new host Andrew Daly, and several other comedians that most regular Comedy Central viewers would recognize. I don't know why Pardo didn't get the gig...there was a petition online for MG Live fans to sign. I hear he did a great audition, but maybe Daly was just a tad better. Sounds promising, though.

Will this version have the Match-Ups round, the best part of the MG91? Also, will the scoring system be points like the classic game or in cash, like the Ross Shafer edition.
