Edit: This is long enough to be a full post by now. It’s being reported in a few places that the host of Match Game is former Mad-TV cast member and panelist of Comedy Central’s CrossBalls, Andy Daly, is the host. We’re waiting for official confirmation because this comes from a post on this forum, but it looks to be pretty set. Andy’s a very fun person and was one of the few (very few) spots of light on the Mad TV cast, so I think he can definitely handle this. Plus he’s really funny. And that’s, you know, kinda needed for a comedy show.
An audience casting notice for either a pilot or a regular taping of Match Game has appeared, and two of the featured celebrities are listed on it. The first two are actors/comedians Sarah Silverman and Norm Macdonald. Already they have me incredibly interested. They got people they need to get: really funny comedians and actors who are great at improv and can go “out there” while keeping it within limits and needed. They could use more people like these two. Plus they are pretty big celebrities as well which can’t hurt. Still no word on host and the thing tapes on Thursday which is a bit alarming. Nice…I’m not the biggest Sarah Silverman fan, but I do realize she’s a popular name, and do think it’s a good pick-up for name recognition. If she can get Jimmy Kimmel to make a guest appearance (or at least appear on his show to plug “Match Game”), then all the better.
I do like Norm’s cynical humor, so I am happy to see that…maybe he can get the Richard Dawson chair (*chuckle*)…and as he showed on “Celebrity Millionaire”, he’s a pretty intelligent guy…

Personal opinion…Sarah Silverman is annoying. Norm, on the other hand…that’s a great pickup. But the ringmaster…

again I not a Sarah Silverman fan, I don’t find her funny, however, i am a huge Norm Macdonald fan so I’ll watch if and when it airs, but that’s a huge problem if they can’t find a host, mainly becuase if it’s taping thursday, he/she is gonna be rushed into the role and that’ll hurt the show. I was thinking frank Nicotero for host too or bill Dwyer but I’d be afraid too have too many comedians on the set for fear it would distract from the game.

I like Norm, so I’m not as scared about this one as I once was. However, the fact that there’s no word on a host still has me a bit worried.

Well, enjoy your show. This news leaves me incredibly non-interested. IMHO, Silverman is annoyingly non-funny, and MacDonald is just drab. What I fear is that every answer will be stretching for the double meaning, if not just explicitly saying “boobs”. I have no interest in that.

It been Reported that Andy Daly from Madtv is hosting

I was hoping that Jimmy Pardo or Frank caliendo would get the gig. i never thought of Andy Daly being a game show host. He might do a good job we will have to see
Sarah Silverman is annoying and not funny and Norm Macdonald reminds me too much of David Letterman. They should be OK i hope they mix it up with comedians and Regular actors so the panel wont be too crazy. I hope Betty White And Vicki Lawrence makes some Appearances and other classic match game people.
But i will watch i am curious about this version
Posted on June 17th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
so the producers are looking for the next Brett and Charles in this new era of Match Game. Sarah and Norm werent the names of people i would expect but its an interesting combination.
Frank Niccatero would make a great host. Street Smarts was just like Match Game, and he would do Gene Rayburn proud, because he can potentially be a great ringmaster.
Now does anyone know about the set? Have the begun taping yet?

Mad TV cast member, Andy Daly will be hosting this version of Match Game…
Posted on June 17th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Andy who?
Posted on June 17th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
According to a pretty reliable poster on the Invision board, the set is a replica of the 1978-82 “blue” set.
I have to say that this sounds really promising. They got talented, well-known people with strong comedy backgrounds. And Norm and Sarah may have a pre-existing chemistry since they worked together on SNL.

Mad TV is still on the air?!?!!? Who is this Andy guy?
Posted on June 17th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
Sadly, LaJuan, it is, although, IMHO, it hasn’t been funny since the originals left.

I’m just curious as to why the producers and casting directors didn’t go with the REAL new Brett and Charles that we saw on the Match Game episode of Gameshow Marathon . . . Kathy Griffin and Bruce Villanch. If you want a new Brett and Charles you need a bitter divorced funny woman (Kathy) and a openly proud gay man (Bruce)
Posted on June 18th, 2008 at 8:36 am
Norm McDonald is pretty funny. The show might end up being pretty good (let’s hope). Can’t say I find Sarah Silverman funny, but maybe because I haven’t seen too much of her.
Posted on June 18th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
(in responce to pylluver) IMO Kathy Griffin is not right at all for this show unless they plan to appeal to gay Griffin fans and people who like to hear cursing all the time. Griffin is sometimes funny but her outspoken attitude acts like it belongs on MG98…and we don’t want something like that. And also I think the “Charles” of the group should not be too flauntingly gay. We have enough of that on TV today. Also, I think this version of MG shouldn’t try to remake the original to the point where the panelists remind us of past panelists. They should try doing their own thing.

Will this version have the Match-Ups round, the best part of the MG91? Also, will the scoring system be points like the classic game or in cash, like the Ross Shafer edition.

If they can snag some of the celebs from the Live stage show that Jimmy Pardo hosts, this new version could rock. Some of the panelists have included Jeneane Garafalo, Paul F. Thompkins, Maria Bamford, new host Andrew Daly, and several other comedians that most regular Comedy Central viewers would recognize. I don’t know why Pardo didn’t get the gig…there was a petition online for MG Live fans to sign. I hear he did a great audition, but maybe Daly was just a tad better. Sounds promising, though.

I like the first two choices for celebs, but there is a ? on the host. But, he might turn out okay.
You also have to hope that the producers realize that the classic show worked because of the host and comedy Chemistry with the celebs. I mean, yes the contestants want to win the money, but as Mr. Rayburn said constantly in interviews, “It’s a rotten format, but it worked because of the interaction between me and the celebrities.”

Fremantle did a nice job updating The Price Is Right’s set when Drew Carey took over, leaving it familiar yet updated with newer lighting, color, and design.
If Fremantle replicates the blue/white I-beam set from 78-82, it won’t be exactly the same but will be updated as much as possible without losing the feel.
I find it interesting that it’ll be shot in Studio 58, next door to the Late Late Show. Not the traditional home downstairs in Studio 33, but if the Late Late Show needs to siphon audience members…
I have no idea who the host is, which is actually a good thing. It gives them a chance to cultivate new talent. Sarah Silverman and Norm McDonald’s humor is more fitting for TBS late night and could be the next Brett and Charles. It is clear: Jay Wolpert isn’t at the helm of this show. I think Fremantle (then Pearson) learned their lesson with the debacle that was 98-99.

Well, have you ever looked at usgameshows.net, and the failed Match Game pilots they tried before 98? Wow…very scary that 98 was the best of the bunch. One even had the contestants write their answer on a card, and had the celebs speak their answer. So, 98 wasn’t so far off from the original. There were only a few problems with that version: A) 5 celebs, B) only %5000 bonus round when 18 years before you had a chance at $10,000 in the super match, C) cutesy names for categories instead of A or B, D) Judy Tenuta. Frankly, if they had upped the budget for $10000 for the bonus, added another celeb, stayed with A and B, and dropped Tenuta, the show would have been pretty good. At least the rest of the talent they got was OK.
On another topic, I’m looking forward to this. While GSM showed that Match Game could be done in this day and age, you still need the right nix of celebs. They were spot on with who they selected for GSM, and in my opinion created the best episode of the whole GSM series. They need Betty white for a few episodes, hopefully. Norm McDonald hasn’t done much lately, but I thought that he was funny on SNL. Sarah Silverman, besides being Jimmy Kimmel’s GF, isn’t all that funny, IMO. But, you never know how some people will react when they are in a different vehicle. We shall see when it comes on TBS whether or not they got the right chemistry. And we shall know soon enough since it tapes today.

As for Vicki Lawrence and Betty White coming to this version of “MG”, I think Vicki learned her lesson from being on “MG ‘98″, and Betty has too much class to come back to these newer versions of the show. Sarah Silverman seems as annoying as Judy Tenuta was to “MG ‘98″, and Norm McDonald was never really that funny either – bet it will last a season or less like the last three retreads – if it ain’t broke, don’t keep trying to fix it!
Posted on June 19th, 2008 at 3:04 am
You’re right about one thing, DENo1MatchGameFan. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Case in point, MG ‘98. They tried to make it more like Win Ben Stein’s Money than they did the original Match Game. So if they go back to the original format (6 celebrity and A&B for catergories), I think it’ll be alright no matter who the celebrities are.

I attended the second pilot taping of MG on Thursday. I was expecting a whole new look, but lo and behold, it was the 1970’s all over again. The set is a replica of MG7_, the great theme music has been revived as has the opening “Get ready to match the stars” copy. The only changes are the celebs and the Super-Match, which now asks the winner to answer five fill-ins in 30 secs for $1000 each, with the opportunity to replace two of his worst answers with a celeb response. Then the player can go for double his S-M winnings in the familiar head-to-head.
Norm McDonald is in the Dawson seat, Sarah Silverman in the Brett seat and Scott Thomas in the CNR seat. Super Dave Osborne, Rashida Jones and Niecy Nash were the other stars.
It was an entertaining show but I think the celebs were trying a bit too hard to be raunchy and boisterous. They will find their level in time.
Andy Daly was a fine host who kept the proceedings moving.

G’s report is very encouraging. Thanks for the report.

This statement worries me a little. Still, I’ve been optimistic about this ever since Norm and Sarah were announced as panelists, and this report seems pretty encouraging. By the way, who was the announcer?
Posted on June 22nd, 2008 at 1:56 am
The announcer introduced himself at the first taping so I missed his full name. He was a Mexican-American comedian named Gilbert.

Too bad. I was looking forward to watching the new Match Game until I read this. I refuse to watch anything with Sarah Silverman in it. I can’t help but find it more than coincidental that her initials can also stand for Sick and Shameful.
