Top 09 of 2009: Number Two

A bit delayed, sorry, but I think the last two are givens.  I think I can speak for many by saying I never expected a game show to appear on daytime television again.  I don’t watch soap operas and I don’t know that genre of television in the slightest, so I had no idea the industry was going down for them.  One got canceled, and I figured its time slot would just go to another court or talk show.  To my surprise and the delight of many (It’s still our most popular thread ever), it was announced that a game show was a serious contender.  The $1,000,000 Pyramid was thought to be it, but in the end the winner of the afternoon slot, and the first daytime game show in over 15 years, was Let’s Make A Deal.

As with any revival of a classic, loved game there were many doubts cast.  The show was going to be stretched to an hour, it’s very clearly derivative of The Price is Right, and things like that.  The first week was a little rough but it’s improved to be the little show that could.  Ratings are a bit up from the previous slot and it’s much cheaper.  It’s success is causing a bit of a chain reaction.  We’re seeing other soap operas disappear or have rumors of being canceled, and game shows are being placed in any of those slots.  We may be getting Pyramid or another show back in September 2010.  Let’s Make A Deal‘s surprise pickup and success may cause a new era of game shows no one saw coming: the return of daytime network games.  Only time will tell.  I guess we’ll really see in September its true effects.

Wayne Brady is an incredibly terrible host.
    I hope he gets replaced.

@M N: I digress. Wayne Brady is doing a good job as host, and I’m sure that the regular Buzzerbloggers can agree with me on that one. As for the post itself, I was surprise that CBS decided to air a game show instead of either airing a talk show or giving the time slot to affiliates. This could pave the way for ABC, NBC, and The CW (yes, I said The CW because of Tyra Banks announcing that she was ending her talk show at the end of the season).

DID YOU KNOW?: Let’s Make A Deal is the first game show to air in the 3/2 time slot since The Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour aired there way back in 1983.

And, on that note: Have a Happy New Year, Buzzerbloggers.

Count me in DeVares. Wayne Brady is a very good host. How can you say he's terrible if you don't have any evidence to back it up. Yeah, he looked awkward at first, but he's definitely turned it around since. Long live LMaD(if only they can do something about that Big Deal).

I agree with you. Wayne is very good on his own with contestants, thanks to his quick wit, but what has made this version especially enjoyable to me is the rapport between Wayne and announcer/Zonk model/clown-in-chief Jonathan Mangum. Their back-and-forths are the main reason LMAD doesn't plod as much as I thought it would. It used to be almost Catalena-level cheap and too dependent on envelope-or-door deals. Now there's at least two cars a show and for games there's Panic Button and Finish Line and Power Of Veto and both versions of the ATM Game and many others that I like. Frankly, when I wake up every weekday morning and say "I can't wait to watch CBS daytime!" I'm not talking about Drew Carey trying to keep a stiff upper lip during The Price is Wrong (Yet Again). I mean I want to see Wayne and Jonathan and Alison on LMAD actually giving things away, all the while having tons of fun.

I was excited about Let's Make A Deal and went to a taping at the beginning. I "won" money but they haven't shown the show I was on so I don't get the money. I am VERY disappointed.

Only problem is, there's only 1 chance at the Big Deal. Fremantle got it all wrong. And the sad thing is…. Monty's the creative consultant! He should've made sure 2 people played the Big Deal.
