Top 09 of 2009: Number Eight

Number eight on our countdown involves a specific person to me but it’s a generalized topic.  This was definitely a year of god awful celebrities on game shows.  We saw it infest so many shows.  Catch 21 and Newlywed Game got pounded by celebrities in a negative way.  Jeopardy! is doing one show a month which isn’t bad, but it’s been really embarrassing for the CNN anchors constantly losing to comedians.  Without a doubt, though, the most agonizing celebrity I’ve ever seen or experienced on a game show was Patricia Heaton on Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

This summer on ABC’s special series of Millionaire at the end of the show a celebrity was invited to come on and play one question for $50,000 using one lifeline only.  I was physically in the audience for this show, as were some other readers I was with.  I’m a fan of Everybody Loves Raymond so I was excited for Patricia Heaton.  My god, I was ready to throw my Ask the Audience pad at her.  She just couldn’t do simple math.  You’re lucky you saw the edited version.  She refused to do the math in her head, had no idea how to use any of the lifelines, had no idea how the game really went, and did nothing more than seem like she’d rather be anywhere else but there at that moment.  It was the moment I realized, “You know, maybe adding a clock to the game is a good idea,” because if I had to sit around with a dozen people like her in the studio year after year I’d shoot myself.  Take a look at the clip below and enjoy?  What were your most memorable celebrity appearances of the year?

Well, I was at the episode on to which this was added. The actually taped Snoop Dog's appearance the day the full episode taped and taped Patricia earlier that day. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH am I happy I wasn't there to see this in person. Waiting outside to actually get in the studio was bad enough, since it was hot and humid that day. I'm assuming that THIS was the reason we has to wait so long to get in the studio.

But, to comment on what we actually saw on TV…Wow! Just WOW!!! Is she really an idiot or does she just portray one on TV?

  • I saw this on my TV, and I just wanted to smack her upside the head. I don't know what was worse. Her moment or Ken Basin's moment.

I thought Neal Patrick Harris was a stud on MDP earler this year. He led a plauer to $100K. Honorable mentions: Betty White & Aysha Tyler

She earns the money, apparently she doesn't know what it's worth. -_-

That being said, I did this in maybe ten to fifteen seconds. ;)

highlight of the year celebrity wise was seeing Betty White make her return to password,

lowlight: the use of celebs. on millionaire, it proved how stupid they really are.

So why was Patricia even here if she didn't want it…and why didn't she either already know how to play such a famous game show or research how to play before appearing? When someone tells you a test is coming that you can earn a million dollars for acing, you study. If you don't know the rules, get out and let someone who does play – they deserve the money more than you.

This is my personal favorite moment of the year Alex – after watching it as it happened, I was so stunned that she had such a huge meltdown. It pissed me off at first. But now? The humour factor just can't be ignored. Clearly she shouldn't be anywhere within a ten-mile radius of a quiz show, but seeing just how panicked she is at the mere thought of doing math in her head – sheer comedy.
