TOP 07 OF 07: Number Six

Number six on our countdown is very recent. Two days ago as a matter of fact: Duel’s finale. This was memorable for me for a number of reasons. First off, obviously it was a lot of money so it was big for that reason. Second off, it really was a mix of everything I saw decent and bad in the format. I did enjoy the trivia portion. And I suppose, after thinking and talking to others, there is some strategy involved, and a bit of use of bluffing. However, the execution was just wrong for me. I realized that I did not care about the contestants, especially the ones in the finals, by the end. The only one I knew was the belly dancer. Greenberg wasn’t really allowed to be all he could be, and I just felt the tournament was poorly set up. I’d be glad to see it return if they can fix some issues. However, the ratings are saying it probably won’t. This was unbelievably better than National Bingo Night, but I was still, personally, pretty let down counting who was behind this. Here’s a clip of the finale; one of the few times, if not the first, a $1M+ jackpot was given to someone who didn’t know an answer.

Even though I enjoyed Duel too I was a bit let down and here is what I think they should’ve done (listed below)

Two people are selected to duel against each other and the selection is random. Each duel won is worth $25,000 and the winner of 2 out of 3 plays another opponent and there next duel goes up to $50,000 for each victory. (while the challenger would win $25,000 for each duel) listed below is the rest of what I think should happen (each duel is a best 2 out of 3)

    1st Duel - $25,000 ( total $50,000)
    2nd Duel - $50,000 (total $100,000)
    3rd Duel- $100,000 ( total $200,000)
    4th Duel- $250,000 ( total $500,000)
    5th and final Duel $500,000 ( total $1,000,000)

total amount of money any one contestant can win if they win 5 duels $1,850,000 granted the 24 tournment format wasn’t bad but I agree wasn’t fully executed as well as could be but you have to consider that leaving the right answer uncovered is the killer of this game but this game did have a lot of strategy, bluffing and tension which made me enjoy this but if they brought this back which I think should be a twice a week thing then how i have it above is how i think it should be done0 some may think it’s not a fair format but in order to win more money you have to win more duels and if you at least win one duel you would go home with $25,000 which is better than going home with nothing. I don’t know if my idea would have worked for the week long event but if brought back which I’m doubting but shows with less ratings than this are still on the air.

As I said before, excellent game, poorly explained. This clip shows how exciting the game could be and was many times. Was it too easy to win too much money, as in Twenty-One? Arguably, yes. There was no need for the cumulative jackpot; set dollar amounts per chip remaining to the victor would have been fine, plus perhaps a bonus for each duel won. Was the tournament structure hard to follow? Yes. A tourney bracket would have been better, randomly filled in as we went. But was the core game good? More than that, it was excellent. Alex wants winners to know the correct answer, but this gem of a game rewards you for knowing when to take risks and knowing what you don’t know. The questions were harder than many questions you see on other shows. Greeny understood the mechanics as the week went on and handled the game well. I hope they bring this back or pitch it as a syndie strip. It would do well if given better explanation and a simpler scoring structure. The game itself is awesome.

Looks like Scott Meckley needs to learn how to use periods.

I took a look at the clip and honestly thought the guy just didn’t think it through. I must admit I didn’t see ANY episodes of this show, and from the reviews I’ve read here and elsewhere, I’m not sorry I missed this show.

I thought the fireworks going off was a nice, orignal touch. Much better than dropping confetti and baloons. They should have flashed the final dollar figure won(on and off- in the tradtional sense) when revaled and chased the lights (like during the next duel selection process) that would have looked cool.

Greenie has to get a personlity, way too Weakest link serious. This is one of the few times the players were truly more, interesting than the star. The aligator fighter was cleared the crowd fav, a big, cunning bastard and the who didn’t love the umpire flirting with the babe–during one fo the questions. Pure Gold.

As I have been reading the website more & more, I’ve noticed no one can leave a game show to be good as is. I “create” my own original game shows and admit to findng variations of already-made shows (such as Chain Reaction, That’s The Question, and Family Feud) but I find Duel to be an unrenovate-able show. I agree with captparis1 that the fireworks were a nice touch but also am I the only one who thought the background music was cool. Aside from everyone in the well-designed studio crying the music sorta-kinda made me emotional, too. & rightfully so, $1,795,000 is an emotionalizing amount of money.
