“You don’t have to be the smartest person in the world; just the smartest person in the room.”
Jason Luna proved he was the smartest (and gutsiest) in the room by being the first player in US 1 VS 100 history to defeat the Mob and win the $1,000,000 top prize. Above is the video of his big win. Enjoy! Congratulations to Jason. Fantastic start to a fantastic season.
1 VS 100’s new prize system, while I still think it’s not as good as last season, really isn’t that bad. It’ll get people to play on for a longer period of time making for more exciting wins like this. I still think letting contestants only stop once in each money level would work a better and make it flow quicker, but the producer in me says what they have now is just fine. Now let’s just hope the ratings match the excitement for the show’s return.
The crowd favorite, NBC’s 1 VS 100, returns with its long-awaited second season tonight at 8PM ET. We’ve gone over the prize ladder (which I’m slowly warming up to), but remember tonight is a Battle of the Sexes episode. One man versus 100 women and then one woman versus 100 men. Be sure to watch as well, something special is going to happen tonight. What did you all think of the new prize ladder and season?

Okay, I’m not partial to the new system, but it really speeds everything up. I sorta like it so far…

I really do like the new set. It looks amazing. I also thought I wouldn’t like the new money system, but it does encourage more risk to get reward.
Also, how did that girl not know what a prime number is? Wow. That’s are you smarter than a 5th grader stuff.

OH MY!
What an incredible first night back for this show. I’m worried about spoiling it, but wow.

I only got to see the last 10 minutes or so and from what I saw I thought the questions were pretty easy. I love how they’ve brought back the effect where they light up the wrong answers one at a time. it adds to the suspense and I agree with jackson the new set looks great (the lights are a little hard on the eyes but meh..)
as far as the new ladder I think I’ll learn to love it.
I just noticed in the credits Terrence MacDonnell (sp?) doesn’t have a credit anymore is he no longer with the show? huge loss.

Don’t worry about spoilers. I’ll warn people in the main post. Spoil away about you know what.

I am, too, growing on the new prize ladder. However, they should, at least, pro-rate the cash amounts, so it would give a little incentive when a question is answered correctly.
If you eliminate 93 people, the person would have $650,000 ($500K for eliminating 90 members + $50K for eliminating three more, at the $1,000,000 level) to risk, if he/she was going for the million.

I honestly like the new money ladder system!
It definitely speeds the game up, and there is more reward for the risk you are willing to take. Just think, say if you have $100,000, but your one person away from $250,000. Do you take that one little question for a chance at a $150,000 increase, to possibly $500,000 and $1,000,000? Or do you play it safe, and keep your $100,000.
Also, the podiums now light up one at a time (which I miss) for incorrect mob answers. There are also teasers where if the “one” is only one person away from reaching the next level in the money tree, the incorrect podiums stop lighting up for a few seconds, then out of no where, another one lights up! Talk about tension!
Overall, I’m pleased with the return of the show!

While I was unsure of the new money structure, NBC actually turned a good and made it better. oh WTG Jason! Now if we could get a millionaire on DoND.

I’m hearing that this was somewhat spoiled even before the airing, so I’m apparently late to the party on finding out. Oh well, I prefer suspense.
I liked the new system. Endemol finally taking a hint and using the slow down only sparingly (the 1 away from an increase moment) instead of constantly. I see your idea on pro-rating Woodie, but I think having it be level hurdles increases the risk/reward element Bob talked about. I understand the love for the old prize system, but honestly it struck me as tedious and drawn out.
Oh, and I got that last question wrong. Just didn’t think of the people like my Mom who send Christmas cards out by the boxload.

Well ladies and gentlemen. Tonight is a PRIME (’scuse the bad joke) EXAMPLE of why this show should get the emmy nods, critical acclaim, and big ratings timeslots it deserves, but doesn’t always seem to.
As for the new format, it’s okay, IMHO, definitely makes it more exciting when you’re deeper in the game, but those moments are rarer, of course, then those earlier in the game. So, you’re gonna have a number of ho hum moments early on before you see exciting situations, like we had tonight, again. The mob, also, gets screwed early on, but around the 100k to 250k rungs, the money starts to swing the other way, creating higher stakes when players make it verrrrry deep, and more money, thus, for the mob to potentially split.
One good consequence I like about the new format is that it causes the mob members elimimated to be shown one at a time, like early on last season, instead of having like 32 squares turn red instantaneously. That was one little effect I missed, and I thought it was great at building tension.
The new set was KICKASS *pardon*, the questions were great (a tad on the easy side, but still alright, still engaging, creative, and usually requiring knowledge of more than one item to answer), and Bob rocked! The one nitpick I otherwise have is that the new “reveal correct answer” sound seems out of place, I like the one used at the end of last season more *dun dum dum*!
Still, 1vs100 will be appointment TV for me, and I hope its ratings knock everyone else out of the ballpark. Time will tell…

After tonight…I LOVE THIS SHOW MORE THAN EVER!!!!!!!
Unbelievable first night back! Only four days into the new year and we already have a “Moment of the Year” candidate. The first truly BIG game show moment of ‘08!
Hmmmm…is this a sign of things to come?! Much more on this later!

At first, i Hated the changes. Now i like it. I can’t believe there have been 2 game show millionares within the span of 2 weeks. (Duel) I like that the light up once at a time thing has come back. The questions are a little bit easier. And yes, I am pleased with 1 vs 100’s return.

Well I never.
What odds would you have got nine months ago on the next NBC game show millionaire being on something other than Deal?
One hell of a moment, and I’m speaking as someone who merely heard about it as it happened!
As for the money ladder, I think I eventually settled on ‘it’s largely sucky but will create the odd amazing moment that otherwise may not have come’. Was this such a moment? With Trust The Mob still in his locker at that point, probably not. Who cares? That was insane.

(Loosely quoted) “Welcome to the new season of ‘1 vs. 100!’ We’ve got a brand new set…” Huzzah to that. “…and some brand new game play…” Boo hiss.
Well, I’m proud of tonight’s outcome (if for no other reason, my gender won). Two things still bother me though…
(1) The money tree/ladder/cumulation diagram. And we’ve all had our rants about this before, but what I found myself doing is as I was watching, Bob would say, “You now have $10,000…” and I would finish the sentence with, “…but you should have $36,000″ (or something to that effect). I think the first point that the new money tree/ladder/cumulation diagram jumped above what you would get in the old system was at the quarter-mil mark. (And I’ll comment no more beyond that.)
(2) The clean and jerk question… I had the misfortune of choosing to watch this episode with my mother. ‘Nuff said on that. If all of the humor of this game is now going into the realm of the toilet, then it’s really lost my appeal.

Okay, here’s the thing.
That Hallmark Cards question (the eventual million-dollar winner) was NOT easy at all. It was demonstrated during that moment. I’m sure everyone was in the same boat with Jason (at first) that because not everyone celebrates Christmas, and most people love their mothers, that Mothers Day was the answer. Ah, here we have a classic case of conventional wisdom being foiled, which is the case on a lot of occasions whenever $1,000,000 or another big amount is resting on one question. Jason, somehow, someway, had the balls of steel to go AGAINST conventional wisdom, and tonight was the right night to do it!
Also, lost in all of this was another heart-warming moment. Did you notice the shot of a section of the all-female mob (I’m not sure if all 100 did this) holding hands before the right answer was revealed? At that moment they knew they wouldn’t win, but their train of thought had to be “Well, if we’re not going to win, by all means, we want him to win it all! To be witnesses to a historic moment on this show would be a heck of a consolation for us. Oh, please be right Jason…………”
Imagine that, a mob, thirsting for money, now unified for the “One.” What an awesome sight!

The money ladder is good, so at least there arent morbidly high totals early in the game. There will probablly be some big mob wins from the new tree, so I’m all for the ladder. It gave off WAY more tension than the old format, which is a huge plus. I do miss that vertical screen from which the Q&A’s appeared, I always liked that upward camera shot. The faster gameplay is much better.

IT CAN BE DONE!!! Outstanding work Jason!
I will, however, miss the “two-step-logic” questions that made the first series of 1 vs 100 the challenge that it was. (Example in Top 07 of 07: moment 4 - the U.S. Capitol by Mayor question). As a farewell to a unique twist, I offer the following:
One of the songs in the musical “Damn Yankees” assured us “You Gotta Have” what title characteristic?
A) What the Scarecrow wanted from the Wizard of Oz
B) What the Tin Man wanted from the Wizard of Oz
C) What the Cowardly Lion wanted from the Wizard of Oz
Answer: B - Heart (as opposed to A - Brains or C - Courage)

Wow, was that a win or what? Extremely dramatic, fun, and exciting. I agree with intelligentfan about the female mob holding hands at the end; I thought that was rather nice. They saw they lost. Might as well cheer for the only other person who can win. The money chain is not as bad as I figured. It’s not as good as the format last season, but the excitement is a lot greater. It’s fantastic to see the show back, and I hope it sticks around for a lot longer. Fantastic start to season 2.

TQ themes, i’ve heard from two sources, is back on 1/20…
and another source says it’s off the air permanently. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
as for the new format, it worked well, just because the flaw hasn’t been exposed: he was lucky to eliminate the entire mob. who, on the other hand, will risk $500K to eliminate 7 members in a grudge match where they could lose the whole enchilada on any one question, and it’s likely to last several questions?

I give this kid a lot of credit. Christmas seemed SO obvious, I never thought it might be correct. Plus, remember if he used Trust Le Mob, he would have blown it.
I -do- have a little trouble believing that fifteen women could all choke on one question (esp. this one).
Someone tell me; isn’t Liam Neesom a U.S. Citizen? (Whether that makes him eligible for the Presidency is admittedly another question). Still, I thought I read that once.

I almost forgot about it! :O I woulda been sad. And, yes, I saw a comercial about how someone gets to the million. It pretty much ruined it, but I was nervous for him at the end because I thought for sure it was Mother’s Day. I swear it was a question on Trivia Trap recently.
I liked the new money ladder. I did like how each person eliminated gave you money last season, but I started to notice that if a lot of people got eliminated early, and less and less people got eliminated as the money went up, so if two people eliminated the same amount of people and walked away they probably had a different amount, which almost isn’t fair. (I hope I explained my reasoning good)
I liked how they stopped at the last person a lot and how the mob went off one at a time. When they all came on at once I thought it was a little lame.
The set was awesome too. I loved the lights going all through the mob and the big screen. It looked really cool.

QUOTE: Douglas-Liam Neeson was born in Northern Ireland…so even if he was a U.S. Citizen, he couldn’t be President (You have to be actually born in the US to qualify- Viggo Mortensen was born in New York City)
Uh, no you don’t have to be actually born in the U.S. You just have to be a U.S. citizen from birth. If you were born while your parents were out of the country, as long as they are American citizens you would also be a citizen from birth and eligible to be president. If you had to be actually born in the U.S. that would eliminate anyone who was a child born to military personnel stationed overseas, such as myself.

26January 4th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
I for one would love to get that win cue….I do like the new set layout actually, as the contestant now faces the mob the entire time instead of looking to the side for the question.
As Bob Saget put it, “Just for Shiggles”, I calculated the money that Jason would have had under the old system (1K for the 1st 3 questions, 2K for the next 2, and so on):
Q1-1K*6=6000 T=6000 (new format 0)
Q2-1K*6=6000 T=12,000 (new format 1000)
Q3-1K*1=1000 T=13,000 (new format 1000)
Q4-2K*43=86,000 T=99,000 (new format 50,000)
Q5-2K*2=4000 T=103,000 (new format 50,000)
Q6-3K*18=54,000 T=157,000 (new format 100,000)
Q7-4K*1=4000 T=161,000 (new format 100,000)
Q8-5K*8=40,000 T=201,000 (new format 250,000)
So under the old format, he would have actually risked LESS than he actually did on that last question..and if he had knocked out just 5 instead of 15 to get to 90 eliminated, under the old format he’d only have $231,000, not $500,000 like under the new format…which does make the case for contestants haivng incentive for taking more chances later on…and I would think they would keep the “Sneak Peek” for 1 vs 10 or under like before, just to make it interesting….

I saw the show earlier tonight, and I can safely say that this is going to be a keeper on my new DVR. Despite those ads from the past week or two spoiling the fact that someone was going to win the $1,000,000 prize, it was awesome to see it actually happen!
Man, I really hope 1 vs. 100 gets great ratings from here on in. I think it deserves to be around for a very long time!

I do have to agree with many people saying about the “Million Dollar Win Cue.” It’s awesome!!!
Who says you need confetti in every ultimate game show win? The crowd cheering, the mob cheering, the lights flashing, the victory music, the emotion, etc… Reminded me of Jamie’s win on Power of 10!

It’s about freakin’ time!!
First off, I like the new look of the set. I’ll take a little while used to but it works. Now according to Bob. This ranks with Jamie’s $1M win. Wellll, For myself….It’s not there on that level but it’s definitely No.2. truly effective for the occasion.
To be honest, I never lost hope with 1 vs 100. I’m a little wonky with the new money system but I have to admit it really sped things up and it looks like Bob is a lot more comfortable hosting now.
Here’s to the new life that 1 vs. 100 has just received.

That was #$%&ing awesome! I love 1 vs. 100 and hope to see it stick around for a very long time.
Even though the show was amazing before, it is even better now. The money tree does not seem as bad as I thought it would be. I’ll get used to it quickly and I enjoy how the question is shown in the middle of the mob now. Makes everything all together look really good.
I’m sure with the new set and music, this would look really cool in High Definition but FOX and Kingworld only do game shows in HD :-(

I knew some of you would come around with the new prize structure!
I was on the female mob and was also a winning mob member last season and I can tell you that you could cut the tension in the studio with a knife! I had met Jason earlier (we both auditioned for the “1″ contestant - and once I saw him and heard him talk, I knew that the producers would love him) and I was so happy for his win. He is a genuinely nice guy and definitely has balls of steel. The way he just slammed the button to lock in Christmas (I think someone in the audience actually gasped) was crazy! I had an eye level view of the action and you could tell how nervous he was by his shaking. We were all cheering for him to take the money and when he did, the entire studio cheered for several minutes and chanted his name.
In my excitement I had misread a question (d’oh!) but even if I had gotten the particular question right, I STILL would have picked Mother’s Day as the final answer.
Whammy
33January 5th, 2008 at 9:22 am
Well, think about the last question this way. You have ONE mother (and maybe a mother-in-law), most people have ONE sweetie (Valentine’s), but for Christmas, you buy cards for EVERYBODY.
Scott
34January 5th, 2008 at 9:45 am
Awesome. The only concern I have is the risk that this show could become 21-ish…too easy to win too much money. But here Jason clearly earned it…and without a Sneak Peek!
JKGuy16
35January 5th, 2008 at 10:40 am
You know, I swear I heard a similar question on Greed once. The question was something to the effect of “Which of the following Holidays are responsible for the most Hallmark Cards?” For some reason I remember Chuck Woolery saying that Mother’s Day beat out everything else.
I would have missed that question based on that info.
David Howell
36January 5th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Christmas seemed the logical one to me because people exchange multiple Christmas cards and only one for the other two - in other words, what Whammy said - but then I only worked that out in a little while, and clearly none of the Mob thought of that.
I’m not convinced this is the best prize structure, but it’s simple, likely to lead to dramatic moments (though this one wasn’t attributable to it), and I think we’d have liked it more if it had started this way all along rather than replacing the mostly very good 2007 ruleset.
I’m still getting over the fact that the first $1m win on an NBC show in this game show wave was not on DoND…

that was very exciting to watch. I wasn’t sure i would like this new system but it was better than I thought especially when they would wait to see if you eliminate for example one more to get to the next level and they would wait 5-10 seconds and then show them doing that talk about tension. This ended up being better than I thought although I still like the last format but I now say i won’t compare this to Trivia Trap Fact Or Fiction Format. I hope this show will stay around for a long time and some of the jokes were funny too like that one question involving some olympic or weightlifting event or something of that nature sure there were some sexual inneudos in it but still 1 vs 100 was a fun hour of TV and I will be looking forward to next week and the coming weeks.

and if you thought that olympic event question had sexual innuendo in it? listen to bob:

I knew it! I had a feeling that NBC would have the 1st millionaire on 1 vs. 100 first before DonND (BTW, has there been a millionaire yet? I don’t think so. Michelle Falco is still their best contestant). 1 vs. 100 is so much better produced that DorND. I mean, there were no cliffhangers (no ideas NBC please!) and the pacing was 100x better. I really liked the new money system. I’m happy that they didn’t do a “Winning Lines” style tree in which you won money for each member eliminated, this one works much better. Another positive: NO FREAKIN’ SPOILERS!!! Yeah-haw! DorND could take some ideas from tonights game. Personally, I would have given the kid $1,100,000 by instituting a jackpot system adding money to the top amount every time the top prize is not won (Are you listening NBC?) My only one beef with this game, is even though I was so happy for Jason winning the mil and proving why 1 vs. 100 kicks DorND’s ass, is that I knew already he was going to win. I am stick and tired of NBC using promos telling you what is happening on the next episode and giving away so much, IT A GAME SHOW FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!! That would be like giving away what is coming up next on say, Jeopardy!, Wheel, or The Price is Right. Other than that, a great night for 1 vs. 100, I knew they would have the first millionaire and I’m glad it happened.

Oops. I have to backtrack to where I said “NO FREAKIN’ SPOILERS!”, I got too excited there. I meant to say “NO FREAKIN’ SUPPORTERS!” It’s very refreshing to see a show where the contestant can be able to make his/her own decision without their “friends” (yeah right) making a bad decision for them or talking them into a bad decision.

Ths might be just my view, but with the new mob setup, it looks bigger and more intimidating. Plus, the finally put that goofy screen so the question is staring the contestant down, as it should be. Good to hear they gave away the million, if only I saw it :-\
D
45January 8th, 2008 at 7:19 am
I’m not really thrilled with the new prize ladder, but it did make the game go faster. Maybe it’s the way it’s presented on the screen, but it’s just kinda too busy or something. I think I like the format better, but it could be worse I suppose.
I will say that I found the two contestants on this episode to be quite annoying, not to mention NBC already ruined the whole thing by saying that one person is going to win a million dollars. Once the female contestant started the show, I knew it was going to be the guy who won. Wouldn’t make sense to start the show with a million dollar win and then go downhill from there. Eh. Anti-climactic if you ask me.
As for the winning question: When you really think about it, Christmas did make sense to be the right answer. People usually only send a Mother’s Day card to one person (their mother), and even though not everyone celebrates Christmas - people who do usually send out much much more than just one card…

You know I really wasn’t looking forward to this new money system, but when a 21 year old won the $1,000,000 on the season premiere that was just incredible. I now fully see what NBC was trying to do by trying to create a money tree that would make people take more risks. Amazing it took something as that to get the first million dollar winner in the history of the show. From now on I’m not going to complain about something until I see the episode and see how it fully works out. Man NBC sure showed us who’s boss.

47January 9th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
I was like most & not looking forward to the new money system, but after seeing it executed my only nit-pick is the values on it. I’d suggest the following:
10 eliminated = $5,000
20 eliminated = $10,000
30 eliminated = $15,000
40 eliminated = $25,000
50 eliminated = $50,000
60 eliminated = $75,000
70 eliminated = $125,000
80 eliminated = $250,000
90 eliminated = $500,000
all eliminated = $1,000,000
I know it resembles Weakest Link & Millionaire but I have a problem with 10 eliminated for just $1,000. All in all, great game likable new format.
Ben vs. 100
48January 26th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Last night’s episode proves why this money ladder is inferior to the other three money ladders they’ve used.
The guy had only eliminated nine mob members through his first five questions. Under the December 2006-2007 format, that would have been worth around $15,000. Under this format, it’s worth…you guessed it, $0. No one should get $0 for answering five consecutive questions correctly.
Going from $0 to $250,000 in three questions? That is just so wrong.
Please go back to this format:
3 questions @ $1,000
2 questions @ $2,000
1 question @ $3,000 etc….
Intelligentfan777

Sorry, but you’re a little late to the party Ben. We’ve pretty much discussed why this money tree works better in the long run than the previous one! You neglect to mention that contestants now have better reason and incentives to go deeper into the game, and it’s showing.
