This Past Week in Game Shows

I’ve been away over the weekend so I haven’t had a chance to do any updates.  I apologize.  Needed a weekend away from a monitor; I’m sure many of you know how I feel.  However, duty calls.  I wanted to be sure to show you some of the events that went on as I make my way back to my office.

*Congratulations to reader Chad Mosher for winning $43,550 on Friday’s Who Wants to be a Millionaire.  He successfully answered nine questions correctly and took advantage of the show’s Double Money week, doubling the $25,000 prize to $50,000 for answering just one question.  We’ve got more readers on soon.  We’ll let you know when.  Meanwhile, take a look at parts of Chad’s appearance below.  Looking at the trailers, I’d be sure to watch next week as well.

*My favorite type of music is grunge.  I’m still stuck in the 90′s.  It’s why I’m very happy that bands from the 90′s like Smashing Pumpkins and Garbage and Soundgarden and Bush.  Gavin Rossdale of Bush was on Jimmy Kimmell Live! having fun with the game show genre.  Check it out.

*The Price is Right celebrated its 7,500th show this past week in a way the show’s never done before: three cash games and three car games all in the same episode.  The Showcases had a great twist to them as well.  A bit of it is below.

The 7500th episode showcases sucked! If they really wanted to honor the tried and true institution known as The Price is Right; they would’ve had grandfather clocks as the main prize, every game developed since inception would’ve been played, and Bob Barker wouldve come in at the end and fired Drew on the spot and brought everything back to 1973. Those were the days!!

Note added here for those who’s sarcasm detectors are broken.

I’m sure the Golden Road boys would love that! ;)

Honestly, who really wants a grandfather clock nowadays? It’s 2011, we need to get our heads stuck out of the 70s. As much as I love the vintage classics, I also enjoy the fact the show is becoming more contemporary and keeping in with the times.

I, on the other hand, thought the showcases were brilliant, and how they all coincided with the milestone episodes that Bob Barker hosted from the 1000th to the 6000th show.

Congratulations Chad Mosher on the win!

As for TPIR, I get where they were going with the showcases. They were doing more of a tribute than anything else. But, then again, three cars and three cash games has never been done before…so, imo, it evens out.

I also think Drew’s tribute to Goodson-Toddman and Bob Barker was very nice of him to do that. He acknoweldged what a lot of people don’t think about anymore….that, without Goodson-Toddman, there would no TPIR…and, of course, Bob Barker started this version off with a bang and kept it going for 35 years. Nice gesture, Drew!

And yet no love for Bob Stewart, who actually CREATED the show and pitched it to Goodson-Todman.

      • Steve says:

That’s getting really old. The portion that Bob Stewart created is currently the “one bids”. He didn’t develop the idea of the pricing games. That was left to Goodson, EP (1972) Frank Wayne, and producer Jay Wolpert. No need to be stuck in 1956. It’s 2011, come and join us. The water’s just fine.

Way to go, Chad. I missed your performance b/c I don’t get to see Millionaire anymore. It used to be on at 7:30pm on WPEC, but not surprisingly, it has been replaced by Inside Edition. WWTBAM is now on at 2pm on WPTV as part of an hour-long double run. Sorry Millionaire fans, but needless to say that the format change, IMO hurt the show.

  • Bobby says:

If they wanted grandfather clocks, the only way they could fit one into a Showcase prize is to stuff it in a NASCAR-themed Showcase that includes a trip to the races at Martinsville (VA) Speedway, where the race winner’s trophy is a grandfather clock.

BTW. . .. yesterday’s TPIR had a rather, um, energetic champion. It’d definitely be worth a clip (just as a reminder that game shows can actually be pure fun).

Now as a fan of Bush and game shows, I do appreciate what Jimmy Kimmel did, except that you know it would help if you picked someone that wasn’t British. The only thing more odder is finding two young West Virginians who like game shows and grunge music (my favorite song from Sixteen Stone: Testosterone)
