Posted by Alex Davis as The British are Better Than Us
I’m a big fan of backstabbing, “on-the-attack” shows. I’m one of the few who enjoyed Friend or Foe?, big fan of Dirty Rotten Cheater, but my all-time favorite is The Weakest Link. When NBC’s version came along, I fell in love with it instantly, and honestly it was mainly for host Anne Robinson. Several things lead to its demise, but no reason to go into it now. When the syndication version came out, honestly, I enjoyed it more. NBC really played up the comedy value of the show and Anne just didn’t fit for what we wanted. Syndicated host George Gray was perfect for the US version.
And all of that went out the door when BBC America began showing the British version. The first very noticeable thing is a lack of an audience. It makes the show a bit better. Anne’s comments seem more critical than humorous. The second very noticeable aspect is the drastically cut back money which definitely works in the show’s favor. It always jarred me when Anne said, on the NBC version, “You banked a pathetic $10,000.” There’s not a single person who thinks $10,000 is pathetic. When Anne says, on the BBC version, “You banked a pathetic £20,” it means something.
Anne’s hosting works far better in England than it does America. She goes for the kill, not backing off like she constantly did for us. Her style has changed in recent years for obvious reasons. The show’s been on for nearly a decade. 10 years of being a jerk is going to get old very quickly. She now comes off as more of a smartass, and it’s been making The Weakest Link more enjoyable to watch. This isn’t to say the US version was a total disaster. We did a lot of good things, like the set, and it was still fun. However, the British version just blows ours out of the water without a shadow of a doubt.
We’ll have some more videos of the show later tonight, after I’m back from roller derby, about the show’s funny side.

Commending the Brits for having the better version of the Weakest Link kinda feels like commending a dog turd for not being an elephant turd. The show still sucks no matter where it’s aired.

The pace of the game play on Weakest Link is superior to shows like Millionaire and Are you Smarter than a 5th grader where a question is dragged out for a few minutes. On Weakest Link,a whole round of questions are asked in a few minutes. The amount of questions that are asked in the first round of The Weakest Link would be the amount used for the whole show for Are you Smarter than a Fifth grader?
One of the first problems with the USA verison was during the second season, there were way too many celebrity editions and not enough shows with regular people.I would like to see a USA revival of the show with Anne as host being more of a smartass like she is doing in the more recent BBC America versions and no celebrity shows.Let’s see if we can get some network interested in bringing the show back.

I agree with Kevin G. The Weakest Link always sucked, no matter what country it aired in.

there was too many celebrity versions of this show. I don’t mind an occasional celebrity version but Weakest Link did it way too much. This show was ok but I personally would rather have Maury Povich 21 come back on in primetime maybe after 1 VS 100 on Friday.

I agree that TWL is a very good show, but I disagree with your statement (Alex) that George Gray was good for the show. IMO, George may have been good if he was put on first, but since Robinson was already established in America’s minds as TWL host, seeing another host do it seems like he’s just trying to impersonate Anne.

THE WEAKEST LINK was an interesting game show at first but then too many celebrity editions and that was it. Anne Robinson was good and I thought George Gray was equally good. They had some interesting winners sharing their winning testimony. It will now be remembered for that one contestant who would become a great player on GRAND SLAM last summer and that was Michelle Kitt.

I am an American and I absolutely love The Weakest Link! I agree that the celebrity episodes destroyed the show here in the U.S., but there were some funny contestants. I remember Anne saying that she really didn’t like the celeb episodes. She preferred regular contestants. She said it was the purest form of the game! I, too, like the British episodes on BBC America. Unfortunately, they’re on at 1:00 a.m. so I record them. I have about 20 DVDs that I need to label and watch. Link is still on GSN and after watching the UK episodes, I can definitely tell the difference. I’m glad BBC America is showing some current episodes. It’s fun to watch the early ones and then the later ones and see how the show and Anne have progressed.

IMHO, I think the NBC version of The Weakest Link was the best. Not that the syndicated version wasn’t, but I especially loved it when Anne Robinson makes fun of the contestants before they wrote down who they thought was the weakest link. George Gray was OK, but his contestant put downs weren’t as funny as Anne’s. I’m praying that NBC would revive the show (to self: good luck wishing that).

I watched UK link…its awesome but some of her barbs could NOT air here. Specifically she uses ethnic and homophobic language at times (brits are less sensitive about this than the US) her calling a tomboyish contestant a “Saphho” (homo) didn’t sit right (been done a few times) with me and a british friend of mine says she’s done worse (she claims she once called a contestant a packie?!) Anywho other than that the cheaper format (same with syndie link, which sadly cuz the NBC version was big money just made it look cheap, also idiot contestants didnt help) makes all the difference. In the NBC version you could tell Anne was more restrained and the big money was such a joke that she had a hard time sounding sincere with her barbs. I still say the late Lynne Thigpen would have made a better hostess for NBC link and Anne should have stayed across the pond…no bother…UK link is AWESOME and kudos to BBC america for showing it…it is the only reason i still have a VCR

The Weakest Link is a game show that has been going a decade here in the UK. It is one of the few shows with enough questions in a show to quench a quizzers question thirst.
Regarding some of the things Anne says… they can be pretty strong words! She’s fishing for the contestant to come up with an entertaining reply.
I’ve had the… fortune… to be a contestant on the show and whilst some of the things she said to me were very harsh - you wouldn’t tolerate it on the street - I wasn’t offended, I gave some pretty amusing/humiliating answers, and I feel she was pleased with the responses (although if she was, she never said it).
I’m trying to put clips of my show on YouTube, but I have no way to get them off my VCR at the moment.
Still - there is at least one show that the US does(/did) better than the UK, Wheel of Fortune. Our version was rubbish!
Note: I’m studying in the US at the moment, so watching as many US game shows as possible. Shame I don’t have GSN.

the only problem i see with the uk link is the chain is too top heavy 200 to 300 & 300 to 450 aren’t too bad but then 450-600 600-800 and 800-1000 is bizarre. but then again these are small amounts so they can get away with it.
i agree the celeb. shows killed weakest link in the US and more or less killed Anne’s “you’ve banked a pathetic $25,000″ lines espcially on the first celeb. show when the group sarcastically celebrated after banking $2,000 in the first round. They also had that problem that DOND is going through now, TWL would promise up to $1 million but then the winner walks away with between $50K and $100K on average (5- 10% of the offered prize money) and people don’t care anymore once they realize they won’t come anywhere close to the million. the uk and syndie us version correct that by offering less money so it’s no longer all about the money. and contestants then are willing to take more chances, I assume 2,100 pounds is an average win in the uk that’s 20% of the potential prize money.
the syndie link fizzled out becuase too many contestants were winning pitiful amounts of money usually around the $3K to $5K range (I hear the record low is $1,000) and the second season eliminating the 5th round killed much of the strategy since there was no longer a reason to keep the strongest player in the game.

Yes, an average win is 2000 to 3000 pounds, they make the questions in the first round or so easier, and so you stand a decent chance at getting the max in the first round.

I enjoy weakest link with Anne Robinson. Then George Gray ,Reason why weakest link was so popular because Annie was mean and it was different, if weakest link started out with George Gray it wouldn’t last that long because George is just a typical guy. And putting him in primetime would been boo. And at the end of the second season George acted bored. But i think the best thing from the syndicated version was the Round music
Same with Millionaire it was good with Regis because he fit the show like a glove, Then when Meredith took over it she was just boring.

Exact quote: “Anne’s comments seem more critical than humorous.”
And this is good, how? The job description of a game show host should never, and I mean NEVER include being critical towards contestants in a serious manner. A light-hearted wise-crack here and there is okay, as long as it’s just in good fun.
In the clip shown above, Anne had no business picking on contestant Jonathan. He played the game splendidly, and didn’t get a single wrong answer until the head-to-head round.

…except in Weakest Link where that’s the entire raison d’etre.

First of all most people are not acknowledging the fact that the Weakest Link was revolutionary in its own right. Where a host was typically supposed to be the cheerleader of the contestants he/she were made to be the biggest enemy. That was the element of the show that I enjoyed the most. I liked that they had to defend them selves from the host and the fellow contestants. So the Weakest Link was a GREAT SHOW.
I think that the decline of all the games shows during the ‘re-birth’ of game shows of that time were the celebrities. I really got sick of seeing celebrities on there and on Millionaire for that matter. I think that killed the prime time version. And I agree with a lot of people, that fact that she would say that $35,000 was pathetic was a little pathetic. I guess we were supposed to compare it to $125,000 but most people could care less about that amount. It almost seemed unattainable.
The syndie version was good in the first season although I wasn’t the biggest fan of George Gray. Not because he was necessarily a bad host, because he was almost a 180 from what Anne was. I eventually got used to him, and I liked the pace he gave to the show. But the second season was awful! He seemed like he didn’t want to be there..even when he would explain the rules he would seem like he was bored. Hence the show became boring. Then they got rid of the fifth round so I didn’t see any point. The stragety of the game was lost when they decided to to that. I think that led to the demise of the syndie version.
I have watched both version of the UK weakest link and I think there were a few elements of the show that they did better than the US:
- Ann was encouraged to spend time going back and forth with the contestants. The NBC version was very shortened and there was a more scaled down version of interaction.
- I believe that the ‘voting off’ portion of the show was better in the UK. This is the geek part of me saying this. When they were voted off in the UK the entire set would get dark as they were leaving. With the music and the gloom it made it seemed very mysterious or playing up the walk of “shame.” The U.S. version was just blue and you kinda left. Most people are going to laugh at me for saying that, but that is something that I noticed when I was watching.
- I liked that the UK version didn’t have the host interact with the viewing audience. It was always the host and the contestants. I think that again increased the element of the show.
- The money was great in both version £10,000 and £100,000 respectively. I thought it was more realistic for this format rather than a £1,000,000 format.
But other than those things I enjoyed both the US and the UK version of the show.
I did think that he set in the US was better than the one in the UK. The one in the UK seemed a little cheap. Especially in the the BBC One version with the cheesy flouresent lights on the floor. That’s just me. I would really love a revival of the show. But right now I am REALLY trying to get Card Sharks back on the air.

You know, with his hosting style, Edmonds would be better on Weakest Link than Deal or No Deal…
But yes. Weakest Link for up to $125,000 per round just didn’t work. ‘A pathetic ONE YEAR’S SALARY!’

Yes when i saw Edmonds on deal or no deal i thought he would be a good choice. Plus uk weakest link is Blah now they need someone like him to spice it up. Annie is boring she reads slow shes not like she used to be in series two Before her podium went oval.
Also if they ever bring back the usa version i wouldn’t mind seeing John McEnroe host it.

To Alex Davies,
As part of you ‘The Brits Do It Better Than Us’ I think you should do Big Brother. If you want a taster of what I mean by BBUK is better than BBUS then watch this video, thanks.
