“The Price is Right” Thrills in Season Debut

BuzzerBlog has been around since April 2005.  We’ve seen it all.  We’ve seen people win millions.  We’ve seen people lose hundreds of thousands.  Again, we’ve seen it all.  It takes a lot for a show to make my jaw drop.  The Price is Right managed to do that today.  It was the season debut, and as always they went all out.  First of all, the updated set looks incredible so great job to them.  George Gray and Drew Carey are as good as ever.  Beyond all of that, though, the first game left me, and apparently a large number of viewers speechless.  Not only the game, though, but what happened.  If you haven’t seen it, check out the video.

sorry 4 cars is excessive, cause once taxes hit, she might get to keep 1. which kinda makes it a waste. and besides who needs 4 cars anyway? but wtg to her on her performance in that game. very impressive and tough to do.

    • Z says:

Don’t see how four cars is any more excessive than say, one car worth the same amount in Golden Road. And hey, she might get to keep one of them this way. And it was just plain exciting.

    • Doug Morris says:

Champions on “Tic Tac Dough” in the ’70s and ’80s (Thom McKee, Kit Salisbury, just to name a few) were known to win multiple cars during their reigns. Recall it and its sister shows awarded the champion a car for every fifth victory in the main game.

While their victories had to come in bunches (Thom, as I recall, won eight cars — so he won at least 40 games; Kit won seven), I don’t see how that’s excessive — and I don’t see four cars in the Race Game excessive either.

Either way, I’m sure the IRS had fun with multi-car winners back then and will again in the here and now.

That was one of the best moments in the Drew era!! Right up there with that Million dollar Clock Game win!!

  • Rob says:

I don’t know what’s stranger about this — a perfect bid and a perfect play of the Race Game to open season 40… or the fact that Golden Road is still down, so the G-R fanboys haven’t had a chance to concoct a ridiculous conspiracy theory about this incredible feat… :)

  • Mr.Quiz says:

..And she only took 13 seconds to do it!!

  • KingErroneous says:

And I see they’re putting all three strikes in the bag now…

    • ElectricPeterTork says:

      Yep.

But, before today, the last three playings of the game were all won, so the New old configuration of Three Strikes has given some pretty memorable moments lately.

      • HDtheman says:

It was due for a loss. 3 out of 4 playings won last season. You knew 3x had to slow down eventually. Just on the wrong day for sure. Anyhow, I’d say Triple Play or Golden Road will be seen this week

  • Nikolai says:

Interesting seeing a game where they give away four “real” cars. On April Fools 1999, they had nine cars in a showcase, but only three of them were real ones, which is still pretty good.

  • Andrew says:

To be fair, however, I had a feeling Race Game was going to have cars one day…

BTW, I’ve seen a Race Game run from Finland’s version where the woman won all 4 prizes in 11 seconds.

  • George S. says:

I think the show started out great but kinda died out in the end. They start with 4 cars and then the showcases were… lackluster. You would think with it being the 40th season it would’ve been a little bigger. But I guess nearly $80K worth of cars is a pretty big start to make up for the rest.

  • HDtheman says:

Oh, and nobody mentioned it, how the heck did we get by without Pay the rent stinking up the joint? I thought for sure Mike would run that yesterday. I guess he could have done it in slot 6 instead of 3x, but I digress

  • Corey says:

I didn’t get to watch the show until last night (thank goodness for DVR’s), but the show was friggin amazing — especially the big win on the Race Game — how cool! It was nice to see the classic clips getting shown too — I hope they keep that up through the season — it’s a nice touch. The one thing I hope they do though is a 40th Anniversary Special or some MDS’…

  • MikeSant318 says:

AND (spoiler if you haven’t seen it yet) Sharon Four-cars got the perfect bid bonus as well – NICE!

  • Adam says:

Maybe I’m the only one that thought this, but as awesome as 4 cars is, and as great as it was to have them all won on one shot like they were, couldn’t it have been kinda anti-climatic if she hadn’t won all 4, and only won say 1, 2 or 3? It really wouldn’t be much of a loss you know what I mean? It turned out great sure, but there was a chance where maybe it couldn’t have too. But then that’s just my opinion, take it how you will.

  • Scott says:

That was pretty epic, I must say. Giving away 4 cars in one game…sheesh…

I do like the fact that they paid respect to Bob Barker by showing clips of him hosting the show in the past.

Though I do have to mention that on the CBS website, it lists the episodes as only being 38 minutes long without commercials. An hour long show and almost half of it is commercials… Whatever happened to the good old days when there were only a few minutes of commercials in an hour-long show….

  • Bobby says:

It’s come to the point that the show’s PriceIsRight.com, as justifiably, has become a source of outtakes, extended winner’s interviews, and things that have to be edited out. That is a good move by the producers to show these extra interviews because the 38-minute (22 minutes of commercials) length makes it impossible to show what used to be commonplace.

  • James says:

And hey, a long cut of the MG/HS music is always nice to top things off.

  • TimInAtlanta says:

As early as 1976 TPIR gave away three cars in a bicentennial themed showcase. Three Chevrolets if I remember correctly. One red, one white, and one blue. Think they were the Chevette, Vega, and a Camaro. Ain’t that a memory!

  • Nathan Diniz says:

You know what I thought of this premiere? INCREDIBLE! I never thought I’d see “Race Game” played for 4 cars, yet, I did, and I am very happy to say that I was pleased with the end result!

  • Truly TPIR is America’s gameshow.

I started watching on day three. Back when it was still called The NEW Price is Right.

    I am Old.

  • ANWAR WASHINGTON says:

Wow, that was really, really amazing for Sharon who won all 4 cars along woth a $500 bonus for getting a ”perfect bid”, truly a classic!!
