From our good friends at Golden-Road.net…
- Syd Vinnedge is the new Executive Producer of the show.
- The main theme is being redone in stereo. The tune will stay the same.
- Some set changes will be made.
Let the arguing about why Roger Dobkowitz wasn’t picked as EP begin.
Posts
well, Syd Vinnedge was a Freemantle employee before being on TPiR staff, and Dobkowitz has been in the same position for years. I can completely understand why they wouldn’t want to make too many changes so quickly.
The main theme being redone in stereo…not a big deal at all. I mean, I had no idea it wasn’t already in stereo.
Set changes…No surprise. There are always set changes from year to year, so that’s not a big deal. I just hope they keep the color scheme and the general set design with just some graphical changes. Tooo much change woulds be too jarring.
Speaking of the theme I am a smidge surprised they didn’t just use the jazzy ‘94 version.
I doubt this, but maybe Roger was offered EP and turned it down.
I have to agree. I think R.D. is just happy with where he is with TPIR and doesn’t want to change it.
As far as the theme, the ‘94 version wouldn’t be too bad of a change I think, but I could imagine that the millions of others that are huge on the show would disagree with me on that. I know one friend of mine does.
Set changes: Less is more. that’s all I’m gonna say about that.
I just pray that Drew Carrey will be able to pull this show off well.. I’ll be keeping my eyes glued to the first episode of season 36.
Drew Carey will do fine. It will take a little time to make the show his own, but if the viewers will go into the next season with a clear mind and the concept that Carey isn’t Barker and isn’t supposed to be, things will be fine.
I expected a set change. It’s the passing of the guard on so many levels. It would look too weird to have Drew on the set Bob had for 35 years.
I wasn’t entirely aware the theme was the old mono version, but it makes sense. They probably just cleaned it up a little when converting it from analog cart to some sort of digital storage. The 1994 version may have worked as well, but you don’t want to make too many extreme changes too soon. People identify with music. If they hear familiar music with upgraded sets and a new host, they probably won’t think twice (until it’s too late).
Family Feud’s return with Louie Anderson wasn’t entirely welcomed because the music wasn’t the same and the set wasn’t familiar. The title and host were the only known commodities. Surprisingly, people got used to it.
I always thought that the theme was in stereo (it didn’t go into stereo during the 80’s/early 90’s when it became popular???). Oh well. For the set, I think that they should just make the same the way that the $1million dollar spectacular set was. I like the $ signs on the prize reveal doors and the colors of them and I also like the star lights they have moving around when the big wheel is being spun.
I, too didn’t know the theme was in “mono.” I also agree the ‘94 theme wouldn’t be a bad idea; or, at least a “fresher” derivative. If I could have it my way, one change I’d make, would be replacing the “slant-block” readouts in Contestants’ Row, with new ones that feature the old “eggcrate” displays, but with one hook; if you’ve ever seen pix of the Mexican version, the show’s title (in Spanish, of course) flashes and crawls across all the readouts like the famous Times Square News ticker. The set’s color scheme would be “freshened,” as well. I go with the consensus on Drew Carey. Those too young to remember the original with Bill Cullen need to bear in mind, that HE was associated with the show when Barker took over (also, Dennis James hosted the syndicated version at that time). The rest is (or was) history.
Well, I don’t particularly care who the EP is as long as the show stays good. The theme song sounded pretty good for being in mono. Finally, as long as not too many set changes are made too soon, it will work out. Also, for those of you who knew who Bill Cullen was, wouldn’t you agree that with the glasses Drew Carey looks like a younger version of him?
I can live with cosmetic changes, but I would like them to keep a lot of the original props and setups, like the contestants row scoreboards. I like the fact that there’s at least one show that still looks the same way it did 30 years ago.
As for Drew, I’ve always thought he looked like a young Cullen, just with a bit more weight.

I thought I was the only one that had this view! lol
“3. Some set changes will be made.”
something about the vagueness of this sentence scares me more than anything else. granted, i know that it’s because we don’t have more information yet, but still, i know that a statement with the word “some” could imply that they will be removing the 35th anniversary decor (minimum changes), or that they could burn down all three big doors and replace them with video walls, replace the eggcrate displays on contestants row with digital panels, make the colored backdrop behind the audience into a bluescreen wall so they can appear to be taping from anywhere in the world, change the plinko chips from pinkish to greenish, and replace barker’s beauties (name to be changed, i assume) into “rosie the robot” prototypes (maximum changes). the set really shouldn’t be something huge to worry about, but i do think they could (and heaven knows they could) go overboard. like what was said before, i do think that too much change can be a bad thing.
According to ClockGameJohn on golden-road.net, the set is being redesigned, but WILL RETAIN a retro look - it will be capable of being disassembled for doing shows on the road.
So help me, the very first time I saw Drew Carey on TV (I think he was on Comedy Central, and doing stand-up) I thought to myself, HE’LL play the title role, if they ever make the movie, “The Bill Cullen Story” !!!
I would love to see Contestant row replaced with video monitors. Im am happy they are getting a set update.
Anyone want to take a stab why Mr. D would go an executive produce the Singing Bee instead of staying with TPiR?
Okay I just watched the late late show and they had Drew Carey on as a guest. Here’s what he said..
1. The set will have the same doors, and layout but it will be changed. He said he was going to see the new set for the 1st time on Thursday so maybe we will see some pics of the set around that time.
and
2.”Barker’s Beauties” will now be called “The Price Is Right Girls”.
Not Carey’s Cuties? Awww. Oh, well. As someone else said a while ago, the pricing games named for Bob Barker will have to be changed as well. Barker’s Markers should become Carey’s Check Marks or something, and Barker’s Bargain Bar should be changed to Drew’s Garage Sale or something like that. As for the set, I hope that they con’t overhaul it completely. They still need to have some kind of link to the show’s glorious past, although a few set changes probably couldn’t hurt. I actually kinda liked the background used on the turntables.
The Price Is Right Girls? C’mon, they gotta do better than that (a hint of sexism there, don’t you think? But at least not chattel for the host…)
When I hear “The Price is Right Girls”, I think of dancers on a cheesy 70s variety show…
This is exactly why I suggested Carey’s Cuties over The Price is Right Girls. They soound like a singing group, or a bunch of backup dancers on a ’70s variety show, like Brandon said.
The theme was in “mono” this whole time? What a gyp! :p
The rest of the changes are fine, can’t wait for S36!
Probably the reason that Roger Dobkowitz wasn’t picked as executive producer of Drew Carey’s version of “TPIR” is that he was a Barker ‘yes man’ while Barker was host of the show, and due to tensions that went on behind the scenes of the show with its models (and the fact that Roger didn’t support them with their cases) speaks volumes, and Drew (and FremantleMedia) probably didn’t want anymore of that BS to be on the new show, so they are starting off with a ‘clean slate.’
