“The Price is Right” Holds First Celebrity Week on January 2nd; 7500th Episode September 28th

The Price is Right already began its 40th season in a shocking way yesterday with the classic Race Game played for an unprecedented four cars, which was then won in a shocking 13 seconds on the first try.  The Drew Carey hosted game show still has many more surprises and exciting features to showcase, though.  First off, on Wednesday, September 28th, Price will celebrate its 7,500th episode which is mind blowing.  However, on January 2nd, the show will do something its never done before: a celebrity week.  Don’t freak out, though.

Yes, The Price is Right will hold its first ever celebrity week on January 2nd, 2012.  Stars like Snoop Dogg, Jenny McCarthy, and Neil Patrick Harris will appear on the stage alongside contestants.  While contestants will play the show like always celebrities will play for charity so it’s not just celebrities playing alone.  It’s the same Price you’ve known and loved for 40 seasons, just with a special helper playing for a good cause.  In the many ways this could have gone they actually did find a way to make it work.

Other themed episodes this season include a salute to teachers, a salute to nurses, a breast cancer awareness episode, and the annual Valentine’s Day edition.  However, trust us about the celebrity week.  It’ll be OK.  We haven’t lead you wrong about this stuff often before.

“We are beyond thrilled to be entering our 40th season on air,” said Mike Richards, Executive Producer. “We continue to evolve the show to build on Drew Carey’s amazing strengths while maintaining our core, which is the energetic contestants winning incredible prizes.” FremantleMedia North America CEO Cecile Frot-Coutaz said, “We are very pleased that THE PRICE IS RIGHT continues to excite audiences each and every day. Drew Carey has really made this show his own daily party and the show continues to resonate with viewers of all ages.”

No reason for mass hysteria, indeed. Seems like another fun way of bringing the show into the moden world and playing the TV game the way it’s done today, not when Richard Nixon was President.

      Modern era…

Who the Hell are you kidding?

The show blew up it’s entire idea when it went from “fair but occasionally tough” to “let’s _offer_ the prizes, but don’t plan on giving them away…”

This is no more the Modern Era of TPiR than The Weakest Link and it’s humiliation factor was a Modern Era to game shows.

      Cancel this garbage already.

Some of us here enjoy watching The Price is Right. If you don’t like it then stop talking about it….

The show got better and more interesting when it went from “let’s reward only the LF&Ts” to “let’s make it an even playing field for everyone”.

        Fixed that for you.

There are still six one-bids, six pricing games, two Showcase Showdowns, and two Showcases. It’s still the same TPIR, but now it’s finally joined the 21st century — something it should’ve done long ago, I say.

  • This sounds pretty interesting. As long as they don’t do this all the time like other shows such as WHEW!, Hot Potato, and Bullseye among others, then this would make a pretty interesting week and possibly a great theme week for future seasons.

Now, we can’t comment without the rebuttals from the Fanbois, wait, their site is borked. Carry on folks! And I think Drew is improving on his hosting. 2 days so far this week, spectacular! And he’s doing it with a broken arm, no less. I guess he fell down while jogging awile back.

So, it’s gonna be a celebrity edition? We can’t say it’s the first one, per se. Gameshow Marathon kind of counts imho. Anyhow, I can’t believe Ice Princess Cecil is still with Fremantle. It’s a shocker no doubt

    • Paul says:

I’m looking forward to the celebrity week, so long as it does not remove from gameplay much. It’s not like they’ve not tired it before on an MDS.

      • Doug Morris says:

Ah, yes, I remember that show; it celebrated Bob Barker’s 80th birthday. Chuck Norris (Bob’s former karate instructor) and Larry King (“Kansas City, Kansas — HELLO!”) played along with contestants.

That and I vaguely recall soap stars played along with contestants back in the ’80s.

Ultimately, this is nothing new. It’s an idea that’s been used sparingly. So, no cause for alarm indeed.

        • Joe Capitano says:

And, one time back in the Barker Era a certain Burt Reynolds came on to help a contestant – that’s a loose term here. As I recall, he really didn’t offer much advice.

So theres a celebrity week and a 70s dance party for the halloween show, the golden-road will be foaming at the mouth until they come back online. Cool ideas like to see how they do them.

  • Tony DuMont says:

I can imagine what will happen on celebrity week:

Sean Connery: I bid a dollar on YOUR MOTHER! Oh wait, that’s an overbid, isn’t it Mr. Carey?

  • LaJuan says:

Celeb week….eh. Even if it turns out okay, I hope it’s not an annual occurance.

Speaking of annual occurances, I think I’m the only person that will say this, but I don’t like how they just told us what the Halloween episode will be. I would like the episode more if they just played it and not spill the beans. Same with the April Fools’ episode.

I like the theme episodes that they have been doing recently. I haven’t checked but I hope on those they have them listed on the ticket site. I mean a single dude on the VD day episode? Poor example, but you get what I mean.

Is thwe celebertiy week gonna be like barker’s birthday mds where special clebirity guests help the civilian contestants

  • Z says:

So pretty much this sounds like it’ll be like the couples episodes except half of each couple will be a celeb? I think this could be fun as long as the contestants still get attention and it’s not all about the celebrities.

  • Counterpoint says:

For those familiar with foreign versions of TPiR, Australia had a similar (almost identical) system, where each IUFB winner would play their pricing game with a celebrity helper, and that celebrity would stay with them for the whole show, right until the Showcase.

In fact, click on my name to see a very special occurrence of this, when “Getaway”‘s Ben Dark (tall guy with white shirt) went through to the end, and created history…

Interesting thing I came across today… From WMS (the maker of the Price is Right slot machines)

    The Price is Right

We recently asked you how often you watch the Price is Right gameshow.

Almost half of you (46%) watch the Price is Right either frequently or occasionally.

    ——————————————————————————–
You were also asked which host of the Price is Right you prefer.

Two-thirds of you let us know that you prefer Bob Barker over Drew Carey!

    (this was released today, 10/12)

I was on the show in the audience (episode with Jenny McCarthy), and the way they pick their contestants doesnt seem very fair. They discrimate against people that arent “young” and “good looking”. Most of all the people chosen for contestants row were college age kids. Just saying if they could pick contestants by drawing numbers, I feel that would be fair. Just saying…
