The Price is Definitely Right

A rare event occurred today that has not happened since some time in the 1970s on Price. Check out this clip, and see if you think it could have been revealed slightly better.

That was a total surprise it hasn’t happened in over 30 years and it happened bob barker would be proud of Drew’s work

  • Bob C. says:

That has to be the worst build up of all time. No energy, no enthusiasm. I mean, I like Drew Carey as a comedian, but seriously, could we get a REAL game show host in hear.

F’n Howie Mandel coulda built that up better. What a disgrace.

  • A-l-e-x-99 says:

Hell yeah it could’ve been done better! The show just made GAME SHOW HISTORY…and Drew just blew by it as if he were oblivious! That’s bad!!!

Although I like Drew and think he has improved greatly since those early days (and that his Showcase writing skills are starting to get better), he really screwed up on this one!

  • Ashes says:

It wasn’t just the lack of build-up — the man sounded freakin’ BORED! He sounded more interested in saying “welcome back” from commercial than in revealing that finish. What the hell?! The contestant couldn’t believe it, a little showmanship would have made it a lot more real. Drew, you don’t have to be Bob, but be _someone_ at least!

  • DXSSI says:

I saw Cory’s editorial before I watched the video, so I knew what to expect—but I’m still dumbfounded. My local newscasters have more enthusiasm when reading PSAs from the teleprompter. The counter clerks at fast food joints have more enthusiasm when you walk in five minutes before closing time. I have more enthusiasm when discussing recent dental work with friends—theirs or mine.

Shenanigans aside, it’s a game show and a huge win needs to be treated as a huge win. The lawyer-types can put the “lucky” contestant through the wringers if need be after the cameras have stopped rolling.

  • Jay says:

I completely agree. While I was unaware that this had happened before, it really doesn’t matter. The fact that someone bid perfectly on a SHOWCASE should have a LOT more fanfare than that! Drew may be a good comedian…but, he needed to congratulate the winning contestant a LOT more than he did. I mean “oh, btw, you bid perfectly on a showcase, which hasn’t happened since this version first started…blah…blah…blah”. Come on! I’m sure even Bob has to have some thoughts on that one!

  • Steve says:

CBS missed a great promotion opportunity here.

  • George Smith says:

Wow this was depressing it was hard to get excited about the win when Drew was all doom and gloom. This is part of the reason I don’t really watch TPIR much anymore because I don’t think Drew has given a reason for fans to stick around. I told people before Drew started hosting that it didn’t matter who hosted the show fans would still stick around BOY WAS I WRONG. I watched an interview with Bob Barker and he said while he was there he was pretty much in control they wanted to change the set but he put his foot down as soon as he left they didn’t honor his wishes. Yeah a change was necessary for a new host but the whole neon light borders and the fact they changed the numbers on the wheel and the color for a brief period of time is disappointing. Personally I think Rosie should’ve been picked cause she was up for and she WANTED to do it, it seems like Drew doesn’t want anything to do with the show on most days.

  • DENo1MatchGameFan says:

The reason no one changed the set while Barker was the host was that he was the executive producer of the show, and if anyone working on the show went against his wishes, they were fired (i.e. models, production staff, directors, etc.) Just because the show wanted to change the set shouldn’t have anything to do with Barker – after all, it was Drew Carey that decided to keep the Barker pet tag in tact. Syd V. is now the EP – if you aren’t happy with the set, take it up with him – Barker is 85 and retired.

  • Douglas Crawshaw Jr. says:

If I were the Price host, I have some ideas for how I would milk this:

“Your bid was $23,743. The actual retail price…(opening card)…is so amazing that I want you to close your eyes. Can we get a camera shot of my card, don’t say anything audience!!! (camera shot). There, now, don’t open your eyes until I say now. One…Two…Three…Now, YOU GOT IT EXACTLY RIGHT!!!!!!!!”

If we had confetti, I would ask the producers to send some the contestant’s way.

That’s my bit. Still, congrats on making game show history. Have a nice day, Merry Christmas, and God Bless!

  • Douglas Crawshaw Jr. says:

Still, you got to give Drew Carey some slack. This is only his second year in Price Is Right. I don’t watch the show a lot, and I should be more forgiving to someone who isn’t a veteran game show host like Bob Barker. He hasn’t hurt my feelings; he definitely hasn’t hurt the contestant, who’s walking away with $50K plus and a place in the record books. Isn’t it the first time ever in the history of “daytime” Price?

Like I’ve said before, it’s like the comparison between Art Fleming and Alex Trebek in his producer years on Jeopardy!

  • John says:

Ummm… has no one considered that maybe the show is rigged? Perhaps Drew’s low-key delivery is really an Up-Yours to the producers that fixed it? Just saying….. it seems dubious…. remember when he said… ‘Wow, that’s a very exact bid’…. It’s not such a crazy idea…

  • ScottNotSteve says:

Let’s not jump to conclusions on the “rigging” issue. Anyone who knows the industry knows it would be suicide. But I do agree that Drew’s lackluster reveal — perhaps intentioned to keep the contestant off guard and give the contestant a big surprise — failed miserably. He had to have been talked to before the reveal because he knew the history of the event.

  • LaJuan says:

Wow….i agree with pretty much everybody. I watched most of the episode and missed the showcase….goodness.

Didn’t that guy also get his one-bid right on the nose….that green egg cookery whatever it was….that’s insane.

  • Ryan says:

Honestly, it seemed to me sorta like an “in shock” type of thing, where Drew was so stunned it happened, he couldn’t generate energy (plus, give the man some slack, he’s using a lot energy trying to make sure he didn’t aggravate his injury). I don’t blame Drew too much for lack of reaction.

  • Shane says:

I gotta say, that was just horrible. Thw way he said it could’ve been structured a lot better. This video could’ve been one of YouTubes most downloaded if he would’ve said something along the lines of “Guess what. You’ve just done something on this show that hasn’t been done in X amount of years…YOU’VE HIT IT ON THE DOT! Congratulations!” or something like that. You could say that, yes, he’s still working on his game show game. But this is starting to look sorta like Louie’s version of the Feud. I hope stuff like this doesn’t mar daytime’s best show.
