“The Moment of Truth” Sets Debut Date

FOX’s new game show, The Moment of Truth, is quickly being put to air thanks to the WGA strike. Not long after taping, the Mark Walberg hosted lie-detector game will debut on January 23rd, a Wednesday, at 9PM ET. This means it follows American Idol also meaning that save for some catastrophic and ungodly event we’ll be seeing a full season. It moves to 8PM ET started March 12th.

On The Moment of Truth, contestants have to essentially just answer private questions about themselves truthfully to win money. The further they go, however, the more embarrassing they get along with the more money they are worth. If they can answer all the questions the contestant wins $500,000. However, one wrong answer means they lose everything. No lifelines yet either. If the UK version is anything to go by, be expecting some great questions like “Are you an easy lay?” or “Do you own a dildo?”.

Why can Mark Walberg never get an actual decent show? He’s such a great host and with the exception of, at most, two shows he’s been left with crap. I’d also note that we’re the only country not to use the title Nothing But the Truth. Probably to shed that whole Columbian murder plot thing, right?

“The Moment of Truth” was the title of the family-tries-to-make-a-stunt-happen-on-stage game show that aired in the rest of the world but was here known as a flop called “The Big Moment”.

That big flop was also co-produced by Vin di Bona, the man behind the hit “AFV” (or “America’s Funniest Home Videos” for you old-schoolers.)

As for Mr. Walberg, it is unfortunate that he ends up with the short end of the stick. He could be a big star if he only pushed himself harder.

i don’t know many game shows that were rated TV-14, but this is going to be at LEAST TV-14.

On the bright side, at least Mark L. Walberg can finally be seen on a nationally-televised (non-cable) network game show (correct me if I’m wrong).

Here’s hoping this show dies a quick and painful death so that not only Mark L. Walberg can find a better game show to host, but also producers nationwide finally give in to the writers’ requests in order to prevent terrible shows like these from ever cropping up again.

Poor Mark must have been desperate, this is the makings of a show that can kill careers. I made a Mark Walberg-Jim peck analogy before well here’s another: Hot Seat & 3’s a crowd are to Jim Peck as The moment of Truth will be to Mark Walberg: Career killer. Then again if they produce it correctly this could have comedy elements like: asking a big burly guy: “Have you ever cross-dressed?” which will hook the 18-49s.

FYI, Nothing But the truth was the original title for the To Tell The Truth pilot, went it went to series it was re-named but in early epsiodes Bud Collyer made references to the old title. i.e. after the imposters come in Bud would say “one has sworn to tell nothing but the truth”.

I’ve always been able to see Mark host something like Wheel of Fortune in my mind once Sajak is gone. In my dream scenario, it’s Bob Goen hosting Jeopardy! and Mark Walberg hosting Wheel. They are both extremely good hosts and for all the crappy formats they are given, they still somehow make them enjoyable just for themselves. They deserve something.

I also thought Mark should have hosted Temptation, but nothing can save that sinking ship except fro a total redo.

Or (devil’s advocate) Mark believed this was a good concept and wanted to be on board.

I don’t think Mark’s career will die because of this. After all, there is Temptation Island on his resumé.

Hi everyone.

Really enjoy reading your comments and I appreciate your concern and support! The truth (no pun intended) is that I was reluctant to sign on for this one for all the reasons you have mentioned. But once we got in the studio and started taping, the show became something different altogether.

I’ll leave it to you to view and decide for yourselves, but I think you’ll find it to be thought provoking and really watchable. It certainly has those moments that make you squirm and make me uncomfortable, but it also has some unbelievably poignant and even sweet moments. I really think it’s gonna do well and all of us gameshow fans will enjoy it too….or it may kill my career!!:)

Anyway, Thanks for letting me put my two-cents worth in and I hope you like the show. It might just surprise you. It sure did me.

Thanks for letting us know that the show may not be as bad as we think it might be, even considering

1) on paper, it can easily turn into something resembling one of Chuck Barris’ (many, many) disasters
2) “Hi, I’m Fox Network. You may remember me from such game shows as ‘The Rich List’ and ‘Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire?’”
3) the home country’s game show tipped just a smidge over the edge; will local police departments make this “Must-See-TV”?

Just being tongue-in-cheek here, don’t worry…
Seriously though, the best of luck (and if “Russian Roulette” is any indication, skill) to you, both of which you have, including some serious guts for hosting this!

Mark Walberg, if this is you, if this show starts to head south, please consider hosting the following game shows:

-Million Dollar Password (yeah, there’s no chance it’ll happen, given Fremantle’s “celebrities over hosting talent” hiring policy, but hey, maybe Regis can use a helping hand).
-The Joker’s Wild (hey, it ALMOST was revived; given the current Writer’s Block strike, it could still happen).
-Press Your Luck (see comment #2, although you’d probably have to fight Todd Newton for hosting duties).
-Game Show Marathon (unlikely, but I’d take you over Ricki Lake any day on any game show, even Quicksilver).

I wasn’t alive when Jim Peck fell into the career-slaying “3s A Crowd”, but you still have time. If this show fares no better than any other Fox gameshow (and it might very well turn out that way), heed my (and other Buzzerblog members) advice. Otherwise, you could very well end up spending the next ten years hosting parade competitions and local elderly talk shows (like Jim Peck- see “I Remember”).
