The Hub Debuts “Scrabble Showdown” and “The Game of Life” Today at 6:00PM ETf

The Hub, Hasbro and Discovery’s joint family television network, debuts two new game shows tonight.  After lots of promotion both Scrabble Showdown and The Game of Life will debut tonight at 6:00PM ET.  Scrabble Showdown, hosted by Justin Willman, see families compete in various word games to win a trip anywhere.  The Game of Life, hosted by Frank Nicotero, puts families in a larger-than-life version of the classic board game.  We’ve covered them both extensively, and hopefully you’ve liked what you’ve seen so far.  The Hub provided us with some clips of both shows to get you excited for tonight’s debut.  Get your kids and be sure to watch tonight.

Be warned if you saw the sneak preview a couple of weeks ago- my DVR listing had the same episodes airing tonight, but it could be wrong.

Brilliant! I’m very pleased with these two series! There is a huge play-at home factor that is very refreshing and Frank and Justin are great hosts.

Scrabble Showdown was fantastic. The games were well designed, the host and the contestants were bearable, and the set, graphics, and music were superb. I quite liked the end game, even if the main game felt like it went by a bit fast. Life, on the other hand… It kinda sucked, though I understand I’m past the age range it’s targeted at).

Gotta agree. Scrabble Showdown was the better show compared to the Game of Life. For the Game of Life, I know changing the rules around for the purpose of the game show is fine (i.e. the Woolery version of Scrabble), but the execution of it was so poor, that I start to wonder, “Does this EVEN resemble the board game in any way shape or form?” Not to mention the end game before spinning the wheel one last time; what was that all about? What does it have to do with The Game of Life?!

As for Scrabble Showdown, superb. I saw that they recycled Scrabble Flash from Family Game Night. Other than that, superb execution.

Caught both shows on the rerun today. “Scrabble Showdown” worked better than “The Game Of Life”.

:”Life” showed how hard it can be to convert a leisurely board game to a half-hour format. Green-screen animation worked okeh, and the questions were decent, if a little basic. (But then, remember the target audience.)

“Scrabble” showed some inventiveness in some of their games, and the endgame was an effective capper to the proceedings. In fact, I thought that “Scrabble Flash” was the weak line to the show, with a been-there-done-that feel to it.

Both shows have yelling, overactive hosts. That works better on “Life” than it does on “Scrabble”.

I liked Scrabble Showdown more than Life. That final Lightning round is a big twist on the 1980′s Scrabble with the clues, scrambled letters and speedword pace. The Flash round, well it’s like Family Game Night. The first two rounds I felt a little bit of Scrabble Sprint…one team has to get 5 words with a count up clock, the other must solve the 5 with a countdown. Play along factor on SS–HIGH.

I agree that Scrabble Showdown was the better of the two shows. The final round is fantastic. The Game of Life was so-so. But ut’s good to see Frank Nicotero again.

Curiously, I wonder if both those shows are also taped at Sunset-Bronson Studios in Hollywood like Family Game Night.

If so, that’s a comparison to what Nickelodeon was at their peak. Like Nick Studios in Orlando was home to Nickelodeon’s game shows, Sunset-Bronson Studios is home to the Hub’s game shows.

  • SomeRandomGuy says:

Scrabble Showdown was good. The endgame reminded of a mix between one of the rounds from Supermarket Sweep and the bonus round, Scrabble Sprint or whatever it’s called from the Woolery version. The Game of Life on the other hand……it’s an idea that can be performed much, much better. They could’ve gone for a Nick Arcade feel, moving around a board, rolling the wheel, for money from Minigames and other stuff. But instead they had a car, trivia questions, a random wheel, more cars & questions, and some unneeded minigame to win “a grand prize” which was no better than the one from the first wheel round. Also, they didn’t need the “Whadda you know about me?” thing. If I could rate them: Scrabble Showdown: 10/10, The Game of Life: 3/10
