The British are Better Than Us: Dramatic UK “Deal or No Deal” Finish
Time for another installment of our most popular series: The British are Better Than Us. We’re going back to a show we haven’t seen in quite some time. The British version of Deal or No Deal is still going strong. This past Sunday’s episode was, in particular, a very dramatic ending. The main part of the show ended when the contestant took a £7,000 Deal with the third highest figure on the board, £75,000, still available. They play out the rest of the game to see what could have happened and…well, just watch and see what happens. It’s pretty great that even this far into the series the show can still create dramatic moments the US version could never dream of. If there’s one giant example of a show that the British have stomped America in in every conceivable way, it’s Deal or No Deal.

And in case anyone’s wondering, I checked it out at dond.co.uk, and yes indeed, Del had the 75K in box 4, and Laurence (the preceding Friday’s contestant) had the 1p in box 14.
The success of British Deal probably has more to do with the lack of gimmicks compared to the American version (I read it’s shown five or six times a week, which is still almost 20 times less than Deal on GSN). Guess it’s just in the execution of the game.
Gawd, this was tense! I have to agree; DOND UK succeeds because they don’t need all the stupid gimmicks and all that sort of thing. The tension and drama manifest on their own.
Weakest Link is still going strong with Anne Robinson as well. That was a show that just had bad timing (was shown in Mllionaire’s peak). That is a show that should be brought back. Deal or No Deal is actually a great game show. It’s just the producers that added gimmicks not to mention put it on 3 times a week that made it jump the shark. Cut the gimmicks and pick one night to show it on and it would be just as big of a hit it was in 2005. Bring this show back!
I’m sorry…but, this has to be said…”Banker’s Gamble” *isn’t* a gimmick? Come on. That’s like, on Millionaire, saying “No, that’s not your final answer. Here’s another shot”. That would never happen.
DOND UK is good, But, I disagree with the sentiment that it doesn’t have gimmicks.
Yes, British DOND has gimmicks, but they’re all *gameplay* related gimmicks.
And, assuming the British show works the same way the American does in terms of fairness, the producers of the show DON’T know which box has which amount of money—so in this case they really were offering a 68,000-pound gamble on their part.
Another great show today for anybody inetested i will not spoil it.
The UK does have all sorts of gimmiks and that is what keeps it fresh. We have special theme weeks with interesting gameplay twists available if you are willing to pick between 2 or 3 other random shots. These can result in prizes or the ability to go 1 box at a time. If you lose the banker gets to open and see the contents of the box, as you can imagine this has resulted in bluffing and double bluffing from the banker which has created some great games.
Those gimmicks work.
There’s a difference between gimmicks which alter the game and mess with your head, which is what the British do; and gimmicks that America did where a bank offer could be a pony.
I liked the “Winner Take All” specials, as well as “Double or Nothing”. I don’t even mind the one-time-only prize packages. Sure, The Pony Incident was horrible, but usually it went more like a contestant being a fan of (insert interest here) and the banker offering something related to it in addition to the cash.
Please!,
“If there’s one giant example of a show that the British have stomped America in conceivable way,” I’m a Yank who loves the Brits, but I must take exception to this statement.
