“The $25,000/$100,000 Pyramid” Returns to GSN March 30th

The $100,000 Pyramid logoThe long national nightmare of Donny Osmond’s Pyramid is going to be staved off by the long-awaited return of two versions of Dick Clark’s Pyramid when GSN revamps the schedules a bit on March 30th.  First off, in a bit of an amusing change, Match Game PM will air at 9:30AM ET, replacing Card Sharks (Eubanks), weekdays.  Let’s see how long until the little old ladies get confused.

Probably the most exciting change comes after that.  Dick Clark’s The $25,000 Pyramid will air weekdays at 11:30AM ET, replacing the severely rerun abused Press Your Luck.  That’s not all, though.  1:00PM ET will see airings of The $100,000 Pyramid, replacing Card Sharks (Perry).  Talk about a great bunch of schedule changes there.  The $100,000 Pyramid is far-and-away my favorite game show ever, so I’m glad to see it come back.  An encore of The $100,000 Pyramid will air at 2:00AM ET, and an encore of The $25,000 Pyramid at 2:30AM ET.

Speaking of coming back, an old but new GSN favorite returns to the lineup at  3:00PM ET and 1:00AM ET, replacing To Tell The Truth and Wheel of Fortune, respectively: Hollywood Squares.  No word on what version just yet, but counting that it’s airing after the line-in-the-sand at 3:00PM ET and that the classic version essentially bombed before, it’s probably going to be the Tom Bergeron recent revival.

Late nights are also getting a change that’s going to make people partially made.  Family Feud (Dawson) will air at 3:00AM ET replacing What’s My Line?.  But if you stick it out to 3:30AM ET, you get an original Allen Ludden episode of Password as a treat instead of To Tell The Truth.

Weekends will also see a change.  Match Game will air at 9:00AM ET (replacing Card Sharks), Password Plus at 9:30AM ET (replacing Card Sharks), Super Password at 10:00AM ET (replacing Blockbusters), the Richard Dawson edition of Family Feud at 10:30AM ET replacing Child’s Play which I just never understood the enjoyment of, Whammy! takes the old Match Game weekend slot at 11:00AM ET, Chain Reaction takes the old Password Plus slot at 11:30AM ET, Let’s Make A Deal replaces the old Whammy! slot at 12:00PM ET, Hollywood Squares replaces Press Your Luck at 12:30PM ET, Lingo takes the old Let’s Make A Deal slot at 1:00PM ET, and Meredith Vieira’s edition of Millionaire replaces Chain Reaction at 2:30PM ET.  Dog Eat Dog takes over the 2:00AM ET hour on Saturdays, replacing To Tell The Truth.  Then don’t forget that all-new Newlywed Game airs at 6:00PM ET starting April 6th, as well as the new season of Catch 21 at 6:30PM ET.

There’s a lot to digest, we know.  That’s why after the break is a graphical breakdown of the new schedule.

Amazing stuff! I loved seeing Pyramid in the marathons, and since I only became a regular GSN viewer in early 2008, practically any episodes are new to me! And, both versions? Really sweet!

And, the bonus of Classic Password? Totally awesome.

I’ll have to record me some PYL before it leaves the schedule. And, I wonder if we’ll see new WoF/J! seasons…

  • Jay says:

Learning that BOTH versions of The Pyramid (from the 80′s) are returning is something that I have been waiting for for a LONG TIME! It’s about time! :D

  • Mike B. says:

The return of $25K and $100K Pyramid is definitely something to get excited over.

On another note, it looks like they’ve added more airings of Match Game, Family Feud, and Password, while eliminating every other Goodson-Todman show. And it’s been reported that the G-T lease was up for renewal. So one could jump to the conclusion that they’ve eschewed the full G-T library in favor of a MG/FF/Password blanket lease. But hey, this is a lot better than the “Dark Period” schedule from ’97… and at least they’re giving us advance notice.

  • Wheelloon says:

Wow! I’m more happy $25k Pyramid is FINALLY returning to GSN than anything else, as it has always been my favorite version of the show, and it hasn’t been seen on the channel regularly for, what now, like a decade?

$100k will likely be the same eps they’ve shown in the past also, which is why that’s more “meh” to me, but I’d love to be surprised. Same goes for WOF and J!

The only complaint would be less CS, but more SP makes up for that for me. It doesn’t offend me PYL is leaving entirely, either, and IMHO it can stay away for awhile unless GSN gets more late-era and very early-era episodes.

    Thumbs up from me. :D

  • DeVares says:

I, for one, am glad to see the $25k and $100k Pyramid back on the schedule despite the fact it was at the expense of Press Your Luck (which has been rerun abused since GSN acquired it back in 2001). However, I would love to see the $10/20k Pyramid back on the schedule.

To Fred: You’re right about one thing, they didn’t Blockbusters ’87 much time to run good.

As far as H2 goes, it might be the (post Whoopi) Bergeron version as it had better ratings on GSN. I would love to see the Davidson version on GSN.

Despite the fact that Card Sharks (personally one of my favorites) is off the schedule completely, I’m please with the new GSN schedule.

  • Marc Power says:

I actually don’t have GSN anymore, so I’m angry I won’t get to see the return of $25K and $100K pyramid. but seriosuly, it was jsut a matter of time, I mean it came #1 in the feast of favorites (unless I’m mistaken) as far as the other shows gone:

Card sharks: sad to see it go, but it’s been rerun abused,
Child’s Play: agreed Alex, I mean you could get a few chuckles from the kids who really go off on a tangent but it gets old.
h2: neutral, I’d be happier to see the classic Peter Marshall hosted version but I liked tom’s version as well
PYL: WAY re-run abused, I love PYL but I’ve seen every ep. GSN has aired at least twice, If they aren’t going to get more than 60 eps. it was a waste of money.
Blockbusters: Cullen version was awesome, I’d expect t see t come back on a future sked, but the rafferty version was horrible, please don’t air that one again GSN.
is LMAD gone too? if so, not surprised, it just got boring.

    other notes:

They’re still running dog eat dog & chain reaction? WTF? (pardon my language)

  • Myke25 says:

I’m with you, DeVares. If GSN put The $10K and $20K Pyramids back in rotation, I might have to get cable again! (I refuse to let Comcast rape my wallet!) There are probably not many 10Ks around, but they showed some way back when they did “Game Show Saturday Night.” I love to see some of the Bill Cullen $25Ks, too! If the two episodes with Dick Clark playing the game survived in decent condition, I’d love to see them again. You can see some clips on YouTube…but video quality is pretty poor.

Family Feud in the What’s My Line slot? Doesn’t seem right somehow. Love that Password’s back, though.

  • K.C. says:

I must be the only one who’s devastated about these changes. PYL is one of my all-time favorites, second only to TPIR. I absolutely HATE to see it go, and can only hope that it’ll be back someday. Also, why no What’s My Line? That’s ALWAYS been a staple of the B&W blocks while GSN had the rights to it. Very sad to see that go too.

Despite all this, though, it’s good that some of Pyramid’s finer years are being brought back. And Hollywood Squares too. Anyone know what version of that will air?

  • Julia says:

Do we know if classic password is the B&W or the color episodes? I’m disappointed that they have removed the B&W programs. Seeing those shows is a treat for someone who stays up late. While the newer versions of panel shows have basically the same format, they don’t have the same charm as the original B&W shows.

Card Sharks being off the schedule is not great, IMO. Replacing it with too many episodes of Match Game does not make much sense. Although, I am happy to see MG PM back on the lineup. Also, seeing Hollywood Squares back on the lineup is a nice change. It hasn’t been shown for a while, and it’s nice to see it back. Plus, the Pyramids coming back is great news. Donymid is ok, but nothing can compare to Dick Clark.

  • Chris says:

Oh no! “What’s My Line” has become my roommate and I’s favorite thing to watch late at night. It shows you how classy (and hilarious) TV used to be.

  • Josh says:

Are they still showing [Dylan]Lane’s Chain Reaction? Get rid of it(and also Dog Eat Dog)and show Cullen’s Chain Reaction instead. Anyway, I’m looking forward to when I’ll be recording Clark’s Pyramid and that should be fun.

  • DENo1MatchGameFan says:

It sure would be nice if GSN got “The $25,000 Pyramid” episodes from 1983 to 1987, as they haven’t been shown since they were on the USA Network, and also the 1985-86 or 1987-88 episodes of “The $100,000 Pyramid” as they haven’t been shown for ages! Another idea – why not put Peter Marshall’s version of “Hollywood Squares” in the late night time slots? GSN couldn’t use the BS excuse that ‘no one would recognize the celebrities’ at that time of the night! As for “Press Your Luck”, unless the 1983-84, and 1985-86 eps weren’t bought, it would be worthless to keep showing the same damn shows over and over – knowing GSN, they would probably destroy the tapes eventually (surprised they haven’t done do with the 1986-87 season of “The $100,000 Pyramid” over the last few years!)

  • Rich C. says:

These are great changes, as long as they are not the same repeated episodes and they start from the beginning.

  • Keith says:

I had fallen hard for What’s My Line and made it a regular DVR date, its why I paid for the cable tier that had it. I love the old G-T shows and while they were really only dim early childhood memories, I will miss them. Another round of the endless Family Fued is hardly something to look forward to.

  • DeVares says:

To myke25: I saw clips of the Cullen version of the $25k Pyramid (abiet poor quality) on You Tube the other day. I want to see it too, but GSN will never air because CBS owns the rights to the show (via Viacom) along with the John Davidson version of the $100k Pyramid. And you’re right, seeing Family Feud replace What’s My Line seems odd. Hopfully, it will be the early episodes.

To Josh: Cullen’s Chain Reaction was OK, but I rather see the USA Network version, it was much better.

To Ghost of GSN’s Past: I have a feeling we haven’t seen the last of Card Sharks or Blockbusters.

  • Myke25 says:

DV- I knew that CBS owns the Cullen shows. But, you know, CBS & Sony have a profitable partnership with Wheel & Jeopardy…maybe someday.
    ;-)

It’d be very cool if Sony or someone would launch a Hulu-type website for classic game shows.

  • TSS_Killer says:

I’m personally not happy with the changes. I wanted to see the later 1981 episodes of Jim Perry’s CS, as they haven’t aired on the network since 2000. On the other hand, I’m happy that Donnymid is gone…the next question would be is where will GSN start with the $25k pyramid (although at this point, I don’t care).

  • Steven says:

What if *Gasp* They call up Sony and try to air the*Double Gasp* 1986 Hollywood Squares*Passes Out*

  • Josh says:

GSN probably doesn’t have the rights to the USA Network’s Chain Reaction and I didn’t know that Viacom owns some of the Pyramids. And as for GSN showing Marshall’s Hollywood Squares; let them show it and so what if nobody heard of the celebrities that were on his version?

  • Matt says:

I cant’t believe GSN is taking off PYL and Card Sharks. It’s good that 80′s version of Pyramid is coming back. Why are they moving Wheel and Jeopardy around. What GSN needs to is bring back all the Barry and Enright game shows. ( TTD, TJW, Bullseye, Hot Potato, and the rest of them).

  • John says:

I HATE the new changes. I was getting into the two versions of Card Sharks, Wheel of Fortune, and both the syndicated and the 70′s version of Match Game at the weekdays. I probably won’t be watching much GSN anymore.

  • DeVares says:

To Josh: They have the rights to all Bob Stewart game shows (with the exception of the Cullen & Davidson versions of Pyramid which CBS owns via Viacom, as mentioned in an earlier post) via Sony’s acqusition of his library.

To Matt: GSN do needs to bring them back, but I think their contract with B&E is up and they could/should renew it, so you never know.

To John: Everyone hates changes, but they understand that in some instance, changes can be good.

  • Jay Temple says:

It looks like I’m going to have a busy VCR and DVD burner again!

I’ll be happy no matter where they start in the 25KP, because even those final few months had some shows that I would have kept if I’d know they were going away.

  • Mike B. says:

John: Match Game 7x/syndie and Wheel of Fortune are staying put on the daytime lineup. I feel your pain about Card Sharks, but $25K/$100K Pyramid is a good tradeoff.

  • Whammy says:

DeVares: Sony owns all of the B&E library. Why they can’t show it on a regular basis is beyond me.

  • insaneben says:

I liked Card Sharks, LMAD and PYL (even if the reruns were being repeated about a thousand times over in PYL’s case). All three are my TV eqivalent of comfort food.

While I’m happy that classic Pyramid is coming back, I still don’t get why GSN insists on re-running crappy “modern” Chain Reaction and EXTREME(ly lame) Dog-Eat-Dog. What, Russian Roulette and Friend or Foe not cutting-edge enough for a network that gathers more old ladies than bingo in a retirement home?

DeVares: While I’m all for change, if it means losing out on my favorite shows in favor of stuff I’ve never had any interest in (or hated with a passion), forget it. I’m getting sick and tired of GSN’s “We can’t show you (favorite game show) because we don’t have the rights” excuses. I don’t give a damn about that BS! Just show the damn shows fans WANT to see. I know the network’s based almost entirely on reruns, but you know what? So was/are Nick GAS, TV Land, and a bunch of other cable networks.

Hear me, CEO David Goldhill- time to inject some fresh blood into this (faltering) channel. Most fans have requested (time and again) game shows that have been on the network before, yet your staff doesn’t have the guts (or scheduling knowledge) to fulfill such simple requests. Nab the rights, get the classics back on the air, and start doing something this network hasn’t done since 2004- make people happy. Otherwise, this network could be sharing the same fate as (the late) Nick GAS. So, will we finally see $ale Of The Century grace this network, or is it another force-feeding of Dog-Eat-Dog, Chain Reaction ’06, Match Game and Dawson Family Feud? Choose wisely….

  • chris says:

Can’t believe GSN is taking off WML? again! Classy show that I DVR every night. Best of old G-T shows along with I’ve Got A Secret> Now all we have is I’ve Got Nothing! Please bring it back!

  • Josh says:

Who also needs to see the poker shows anyway? Get rid of those and show some more Pyramids instead.

  • Special K says:

I have seen worse GSN schedules, but here’s what I would have liked to have seen.

First off, Karn’s Family Feud is on 90 minutes a day (with another hour for Dawson and Combs–combined)…WTF? Combs should be rolling in his grave with that, and GSN might put Dawson in one with this.

Next, PYL should leave for a while (it is rerun abused with the same eps.)

Some potential acquisitions (at least I can dream):

Barker’s TPIR (don’t say it can’t/won’t happen, since Fremantle put some of the early episodes out on DVD along with the 1950s Cullen TPIRs)

Original Newlywed Game (1960s through 1990s)…would be a good thing to have with the new version coming in April.

Sale of the Century (it could be done, since obviously Temptation didn’t work for Fremantle in the USA).

Supermarket Sweep/Shop Til You Drop (As long as they didn’t get the awful episodes of the JD Roberto STYD, I would be cool with any versions of either show).

  • Jay Temple says:

I suppose the March 30 pdf will be the most anticipated one in quite some time, just to see where they’re picking up on 25/100KP and CBS Password.
