I think you all may have your answer as to what is the future of daytime game shows with CBS.  We’re hearing that people are being sent applications for The $1,000,000 Pyramid right now and its asking that the form is return as soon as possible, for reasons I assume involving wanting to tape unbelievably quick.

Obviously we can’t confirm it because CBS will want to actually break the news with someone a bit bigger than us, but from everything I’ve heard and now this, it looks like Pyramid will be the first daytime game show in a really long time.  It’s extremely exciting news that we’ll keep you posted on constantly.  This is one of the shows CBS was looking at replacing the now-canceled soap opera Guiding Light with.  Other shows in the running are Let’s Make A Deal and The Dating Game.

NICE! Pyramid's back, and getting the $1,000,000 treatment!

Okay, well maybe it won't be a million – but it's good as it is. Like Patrick said at the top of this page, just give the show a good host and put it on Cruise Control, CBS. It'll take care of itself, and so will "Let's Make A Deal" (because the chances of a new network version of "The Dating Game" are slim – the last one went out on July 6, 1973). And besides that, we're getting a one-two-three punch of "Pyramid", "LMAD", and "TPiR".

    SO wanting a Tivo……..

  • Jake says:

Here's the problem with that time bonus thing: this is not Classic Concentration we're talking. The point of Pyramid is to take less time, not take the help of more. The $11,000 bonus for a $1,000,000 tournament makes as much sense as $1100 did for a $100,000 tournament; wouldn't you agree?

Everything else you posted sounds right by me.

  • Jake says:

The only problem I foresee with the LMAD revival: correct me if I'm wrong, but in the '70s, '80s, and '90s, wasn't the show on ABC?

  • Myke25 says:

unfortunately, I no longer have it. For some reason, my wife at the time didn't appreciate the game show motif in the apartment. I used to have it captured on video, but lost it long ago.

  • Myke25 says:

LMAD originally premiered on NBC in the 60s, then moved to ABC through the 70s. Each network ran prime-time versions and a weekly edition was syndicated. The 80s version (The All-New LMAD) was syndicated. The 90s version with Bob Hilton was on NBC. There was also the Billy Bush cluster**** on NBC and the Fox version with Mark DeCarlo called Big Deal (or something like that).

But why would the show being on ABC 30 years ago be a problem, anyway?

  • Myke25 says:

I don't think I could tell you what the LAST new soap was…Passions, maybe? Most of the ones on the air now were on when I was a kid…way too long ago!

Maybe Proctor & Gamble should get into the game show business. Give up on soaps.

  • Myke25 says:

Or if they DO offer merchandise, it'll be a Playstation or a Sony Card or something.

  • Dontryl Alexander says:

I hope they bring back the famous clock flute (blink. blink. blink.) Here, here's the link.

  • Chico says:

Dating Game last signed off in 1999, IIRC.

  • James L. says:

Bring back the clock SFX and the old (80's) theme, even if you had to update the arrangement for the sake of updating it.

    (Yeah, I know, I'm dreaming.)

  • Anonymous Auditioner says:

I got the application, but then they say to send it back after filling it out. Send it back via-Email? No Snail Mail Address was provided, what's the deal?

  • Jay says:

I don't think 11 extra seconds would be fair to the other contestant. What if the other contestant has come to the WC in the 2nd round and beat the first person's score…without the aid of the 11 seconds. Unfair advantage.

Call it the "Big 7", like they originally did in NY.

Also, in NY, they actually did offer $1000 for a perfect score…but, that was when contestants weren't getting it too often. In the 80's, it happened so often that they moved the bonus to the tie breaker. But, $10,000 does sound nice.

  • Jay says:

    Thanks for the link, Dontryl…Awesome!

  • Myke25 says:

That's the cleanest recording of the flute clock I've heard. Anyone know how I can download it?

  • Myke25 says:

I heard that they used the 80s theme in the pilot. Don't know if it was a new arrangement.
I'd rather they update the original 70s theme (Tuning Up). I always thought it sounded stronger…sounds like victory!
But as long as it's not the 2002 techno-crap, it's all good!

  • Chris says:

I sent my application, but didn't attach a picture. So I sent it again, this time with application AND picture attached. That won't mess me up, will it?

  • BobHagh says:

Chris, you won't have a problem. When I first applied, I typed in the wrong age!! Whoops! lol I keep forgetting I am 22 and not 21. Just putting it on the application felt weird. But anyways, I sent a new email with the subject line "Revised Application Request + my name" and I was still sent the actual application. As long you have the two attachments in the email (application and photo), you are good to go. The people at Embassy Row are very nice and understanding!

  • Jake says:

    Three letters: N, B, and C.

  • Neville says:

Well, I sent in my application! I hope a lot of us get to go audition and play! :)

  • Brandon says:

I definitely expect Sony merchandise, like Vaio laptops and TVs. IIRC the Donny Osmond version offered trips as well.

  • Jake says:

Well, seeing as it changed networks once before, I guess there isn't a problem.

  • Myke25 says:

The difference between this and LMAD is that NBC actually owns the rights to Concentration. They merely leased it to Goodson-Todman, making it the only show they produced that G-T did not develop themselves.

Well…two if you count the Hollywood Squares half of the Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour in the 80s.

  • Jay says:

    I COMPLETELY agree!

  • Jay says:

Yeah…and NBC hasn't budged on giving ANYONE the rights to Concentration. So, one can only hope that Concentration will see the light of day, again.

  • Chad says:

Wow. I have a 6-foot Plinko board in my garage, but you really went all out. Your Pyramid sounds AMAZING! I think I read somewhere that it took six stagehands to turn the trilons for the bonus round (two for the main game). Just curious, how many people did it take to run your Pyramid?

  • Myke25 says:

Just one. It was miniature scale…big enough to set on a table. It usually sat on a buffet table in my dining room. High enough for the "giver" to see over the "receiver's" head…about 5 feet off the ground.
The trilons were 4"x3". One person could operate it while standing next to it. I sat the light chasing unit behind it so the operator could hit the chase button when a team got to the top. Then the losing team would reload the subjects for the next game and operate the next bonus round.

I wish I still had the video tape I shot of it… though this was like 25-30 years ago. I'd have trouble finding a 3/4" U-matic deck to play it back on today. I built it during the $20K days, but we played it well into the $25K days…I just changed the dollar amounts on the board. Unfortunately, my wife made me get rid of it after we got married…before the $100K show came out. So, I salvaged the lights and the chaser and sent the rest to the dump. Bummer.

  • Daniel Benfield says:

I was talking about a NETWORK version. The last one of that kind was in 1973.

  • Jay says:

They could…but, they won't. They've been that Scrooge-ish about it.
