I think you all may have your answer as to what is the future of daytime game shows with CBS.  We’re hearing that people are being sent applications for The $1,000,000 Pyramid right now and its asking that the form is return as soon as possible, for reasons I assume involving wanting to tape unbelievably quick.

Obviously we can’t confirm it because CBS will want to actually break the news with someone a bit bigger than us, but from everything I’ve heard and now this, it looks like Pyramid will be the first daytime game show in a really long time.  It’s extremely exciting news that we’ll keep you posted on constantly.  This is one of the shows CBS was looking at replacing the now-canceled soap opera Guiding Light with.  Other shows in the running are Let’s Make A Deal and The Dating Game.

  1. Patrick Said,

Please Sweet Baby Game Show Jesus, let this be true.

And let the CBS higher-ups have the good taste and good judgement to PLAY THE GAME AS IT SHOULD BE PLAYED. It doesn't need fixing. It doesn't need modernizing. Just get a good host, and set it on auto-pilot.

Kind of like singing the National Anthem. Just sing it like it's WRITTEN, please. It's perfect…exactly as it is.

I am FIRST in line to audition for this if it comes to pass. Can't wait to see!

  2. Doug Morris Said,

Five words: Tivo, don't fail me now. :)

I just can't imagine TDG on a broadcast network schedule. TDG might be a nice companion to TNG on GSN (hint hint, wink wink, nudge nudge) since it easily can run on a cable budget.

Can't wait for (further) good news.

  3. Craig Said,

If this is true(& I'm hoping it is), then Pyramid will be #1 out of the gate for GL's replacement. The big question is, will LMAD be #2? We'll see.

  4. Jake Said,

Erm hem…what about the time they completely butchered classic Password to make it a million dollar game show? In my opinion we already had $1,000,000 Pyramid in primetime.

  5. Myke25 Said,

I recently bought Endless Games' "$1,000,000 Pyramid" tin box home game from Amazon…before the pilot was even announced. Unfortunately, it plays more like Donny (6 in 20…or however long the hourglass lasts) but the cover art is a cheesy drawing of the Clark pyramid and logo. But, it still plays better than the $100,000 Pyramid DVD game that came out a few years ago.

  8. Sam Said,

After thinking about your post for a minute (I was about to say it's asinine), you have a very good point. In fact, I'd say it's a great point. People are essentially saying they don't like the Pyramid game format for Password.

I HOPE THAT THE NIX 7-11 AND REPLACE IT WITH JACKPOT WHERE IF YOU GET 7 IN 30 SECONDS YOU WIN A JACKPOT THAT STARTS AT 1,000 AND GOES UP 500 AFTER EVERY UNSUCCESSFUL PICK PLUS 1000 EVERY TIME YOU DON'T WIN IT IN THE ENTIRE GAME. MYSTERY 7 WORTH A PRIZE UP TO THE 80'S STANDARDS AND NOT A VIDEO RECORDER. A PERFECT SCORE OF 21 WINS YOU 2500. THE WINNER OF A 21-21 TIE WINS 10, 000 PLUS THE 2500.

  11. Steve Said,

Assuming this is indeed true, how would one go about getting an application?

  12. BillCullen1 Said,

Don't give CBS ideas. As for contestants, this is a major network show if it's picked up, so the contestants will go through more of a testing process than if this was a GSN show, and that's a GOOD thing. I know Edythe Chan, the original Pyramid contestant coordinator, died in the mid 90s, so someone else will conduct the testing. But you know Edythe has to be smiling from up above.

Here's hoping that Pyramid and LMAD give CBS the old one/two punch in the Fall.

  14. K.C. Said,

There's a CBS affiliate just 2 blocks down from the music store I manage. If Pyramid does get picked up, I'm gonna support it by buying some advertising for my store on it.

  15. DeVares Said,

The only way I would give CBS the pleasure of expanding the Bold & the Beautiful to an hour is if (and only if) As the World Turns follows the same suit as sister show GL (which could happen since the former is under contract until 2010) and give B&B's time slot to affiliates to expand their newscast (the ones that does). Having said, it looks like a go for Million Dollar Pyramid. The one question is whether CBS will give affiliates the option to air it either at 3/2 or 10/9 because I know most affiliates air game shows (either Millionaire, Deal or No Deal, J!, or Family Feud) at 4/3.

  16. Jay Said,

I hope Edythe Rests in Peace.

As for today, don't forget CBS still has TPIR…if they can get quality players like that for Pyramid, I think all will be good.

  17. Dontryl Alexander Said,

I have the CD-ROM version of $100,000 Pyramid in 2001. And it still plays great.

    I like this.

  19. Wayne Said,

So who has the applications that are being sent out? What's the common thread–are these people the same as ones who auditioned for the pilot?

They did two weeks of auditions, I'm guessing about 6 per day so that's at most 60 players or 30 shows worth of potential contestants. That's a good group to start with.

I auditioned and even "won" the bonus round, while missing very few words during play–I hope they send me an applicaiton!

  20. Sam Said,

Well, I wouldn't say it was "ausome", but I liked it a lot. ;)

Posted on July 21st, 2009 at 8:46 pm

  21. Jake Said,

I agree; not bad, or just make 7-11 played for eleven THOUSAND dollars.

Posted on July 21st, 2009 at 10:04 pm

  22. Myke25 Said,

Yeah, I still have that one, too. Best Pyramid home game since the original Milton Bradley games.
I, at one time, owned every Pyramid home game ever…except for the Donny version.
But the thing that bugged me about the MB games is that they changed the rules for the Winner's Circle so that it mirrored the main game…except that it was 6 in 30 seconds to win. I hated that it wasn't the Winner's Circle rules.
So, I took some plywood, some glittery contact paper, poster board and some Christmas lights and made my own scale model of the $20,000 Pyramid..complete with trilons and chasers. The "$20,000" at the top flashed, too. (I even made it so I could replace the dollar amounts for inflation!) When I would watch the show on TV, I'd write down the subject names to make category cards that I'd slide into the trilons. Before long, I had hundreds of category cards. It was pretty good, if I do say so myself!
We played it at parties and family gatherings and had a ball!

    I am SUCH a geek! :-)

  23. Myke25 Said,

    Hi Rob.
One of the reasons that GL got canned was the expense of doing an hour-long soap with a large cast. Why would they can GL, then turn around and create another hour-long soap with a large cast? Granted, B&B's ratings are better than GL's, but one of the reasons that they are looking at game shows is that they are less expensive to produce.

If I'm As The World Turns…I'm getting real nervous if Pyramid becomes a hit again. Then maybe we'll see Tattle Tales come back! ;-)

  24. ladiesmanheaint Said,

The first new daytime game show(s) in 16 years. Hot damn :) Many of us in the old days of ATGS(within the first couple years of when Caesar's CHallenge and Concentration reruns were axed on NBC) thought we'd never see this again.

Posted on July 21st, 2009 at 11:25 pm

  25. Jake Said,

Wow. You still have it? If so, please post pictures or something. I'm trying to do the same thing, only with Legos and with the WWTBAM set.

  26. DeVares Said,

If I'm any of these soap operas (ATWT, Days, General Hospital, etc.) I would be nervous, you're right, myke. We could be seeing a renaissance here, which is the reason why you will probably not see a new soap opera for a while.

  27. Steven Said,

Myke25 gave me some good advice. Keep thing simple. I don't think you are going to see prize packages like the 80s. I think the 7-11 will be coming back, and the bonus will remain $1100.00 . I do like the jackpot idea for the mystery 7. If it's only played once a day, and the money is $1k+1k each day it is not won, it could work. But I'm not Michael Davies so its not for me to say.

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 1:52 am

  28. Jay Said,

Or…call it the "Big 7"…just like they did in the 70's (when it was filmed in NY)…and make it worth $5000.

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 2:21 am

  29. Mike from Indiana Said,

7-11 and Mystery 7 are classic parts of the game. The fact that they weren't in the Osmond Pyramid were two of the (many) reasons it sucked. I think it's pretty hard to up the 7-11 any, because $11,000 would be way too much for it, and with any other amount of money you'd have to change the name. One other possibility would be to, rather than make it money, make it 11 seconds extra towards the winners circle if that player wins.

As for Mystery 7, it was often played for a home computer, or a nice trip or something. It shouldn't be too hard to keep that going. Every once in a while they did play it for a car, so it'd be nice to see that continue also, but I won't hold out hope.

Finally, about the 21 bonus… There is a "bonus" for getting 21, you're usually the winner! :) Seriously, though, I think that just makes it more complicated than it has to be. I like the idea of it being $10,000 for breaking a 21-21 tie, though. It'd be nice to see that upped from it's old $5,000, especially if the winners circle is $25,000 and $50,000.

  30. Wayne Said,

Got my application and sent it back–mostly the same as the app for when they had auditions for the pilot, very few changes.

It still only says "Pyramid" on the app, so this may mean CBS is still deciding if this will be Million Dollar Pyramid. All the values from the pilot could be different.

Also, nothing yet on if there will be returning champions or not, but if the daily prize possibility is still $100,000, I really doubt it.

  31. Daniel Benfield Said,

NICE! Pyramid's back, and getting the $1,000,000 treatment!

Okay, well maybe it won't be a million – but it's good as it is. Like Patrick said at the top of this page, just give the show a good host and put it on Cruise Control, CBS. It'll take care of itself, and so will "Let's Make A Deal" (because the chances of a new network version of "The Dating Game" are slim – the last one went out on July 6, 1973). And besides that, we're getting a one-two-three punch of "Pyramid", "LMAD", and "TPiR".

    SO wanting a Tivo……..

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 2:54 am

  32. Jake Said,

Here's the problem with that time bonus thing: this is not Classic Concentration we're talking. The point of Pyramid is to take less time, not take the help of more. The $11,000 bonus for a $1,000,000 tournament makes as much sense as $1100 did for a $100,000 tournament; wouldn't you agree?

Everything else you posted sounds right by me.

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 3:10 am

  33. Jake Said,

The only problem I foresee with the LMAD revival: correct me if I'm wrong, but in the '70s, '80s, and '90s, wasn't the show on ABC?

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 3:14 am

  34. Myke25 Said,

unfortunately, I no longer have it. For some reason, my wife at the time didn't appreciate the game show motif in the apartment. I used to have it captured on video, but lost it long ago.

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 4:06 am

  35. Myke25 Said,

LMAD originally premiered on NBC in the 60s, then moved to ABC through the 70s. Each network ran prime-time versions and a weekly edition was syndicated. The 80s version (The All-New LMAD) was syndicated. The 90s version with Bob Hilton was on NBC. There was also the Billy Bush cluster**** on NBC and the Fox version with Mark DeCarlo called Big Deal (or something like that).

But why would the show being on ABC 30 years ago be a problem, anyway?

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 4:19 am

  36. Myke25 Said,

I don't think I could tell you what the LAST new soap was…Passions, maybe? Most of the ones on the air now were on when I was a kid…way too long ago!

Maybe Proctor & Gamble should get into the game show business. Give up on soaps.

  40. James L. Said,

Bring back the clock SFX and the old (80's) theme, even if you had to update the arrangement for the sake of updating it.

    (Yeah, I know, I'm dreaming.)

  41. Anonymous Auditioner Said,

I got the application, but then they say to send it back after filling it out. Send it back via-Email? No Snail Mail Address was provided, what's the deal?

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 2:34 pm

  42. Jay Said,

I don't think 11 extra seconds would be fair to the other contestant. What if the other contestant has come to the WC in the 2nd round and beat the first person's score…without the aid of the 11 seconds. Unfair advantage.

Call it the "Big 7", like they originally did in NY.

Also, in NY, they actually did offer $1000 for a perfect score…but, that was when contestants weren't getting it too often. In the 80's, it happened so often that they moved the bonus to the tie breaker. But, $10,000 does sound nice.

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 2:51 pm

  43. Jay Said,

    Thanks for the link, Dontryl…Awesome!

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 2:58 pm

That's the cleanest recording of the flute clock I've heard. Anyone know how I can download it?

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 4:43 pm

  45. Myke25 Said,

I heard that they used the 80s theme in the pilot. Don't know if it was a new arrangement.
I'd rather they update the original 70s theme (Tuning Up). I always thought it sounded stronger…sounds like victory!
But as long as it's not the 2002 techno-crap, it's all good!

Chris, you won't have a problem. When I first applied, I typed in the wrong age!! Whoops! lol I keep forgetting I am 22 and not 21. Just putting it on the application felt weird. But anyways, I sent a new email with the subject line "Revised Application Request + my name" and I was still sent the actual application. As long you have the two attachments in the email (application and photo), you are good to go. The people at Embassy Row are very nice and understanding!

  51. Brandon Said,

I definitely expect Sony merchandise, like Vaio laptops and TVs. IIRC the Donny Osmond version offered trips as well.

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 8:44 pm

  52. Jake Said,

Well, seeing as it changed networks once before, I guess there isn't a problem.

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 8:52 pm

  53. Myke25 Said,

The difference between this and LMAD is that NBC actually owns the rights to Concentration. They merely leased it to Goodson-Todman, making it the only show they produced that G-T did not develop themselves.

Well…two if you count the Hollywood Squares half of the Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour in the 80s.

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 9:11 pm

  54. Jay Said,

    I COMPLETELY agree!

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 9:13 pm

  55. Jay Said,

Yeah…and NBC hasn't budged on giving ANYONE the rights to Concentration. So, one can only hope that Concentration will see the light of day, again.

  56. Chad Said,

Wow. I have a 6-foot Plinko board in my garage, but you really went all out. Your Pyramid sounds AMAZING! I think I read somewhere that it took six stagehands to turn the trilons for the bonus round (two for the main game). Just curious, how many people did it take to run your Pyramid?

Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 9:46 pm

  57. Myke25 Said,

Just one. It was miniature scale…big enough to set on a table. It usually sat on a buffet table in my dining room. High enough for the "giver" to see over the "receiver's" head…about 5 feet off the ground.
The trilons were 4"x3". One person could operate it while standing next to it. I sat the light chasing unit behind it so the operator could hit the chase button when a team got to the top. Then the losing team would reload the subjects for the next game and operate the next bonus round.

I wish I still had the video tape I shot of it… though this was like 25-30 years ago. I'd have trouble finding a 3/4" U-matic deck to play it back on today. I built it during the $20K days, but we played it well into the $25K days…I just changed the dollar amounts on the board. Unfortunately, my wife made me get rid of it after we got married…before the $100K show came out. So, I salvaged the lights and the chaser and sent the rest to the dump. Bummer.

  62. DeVares Said,

Passions was the last new soap opera waaaaaaaaay back in 1999. P&G could be slowly getting out of the soap opera business although, IMHO, the last great soap from P&G is The Edge of Night.

  65. Myke25 Said,

At the risk of setting Craig off again ;-)

From The Game Show Fix :
"CBS DECISION DELAYED 2 WEEKS: Wednesday was supposed to be D-Day for CBS’s decision on a replacement for The Guiding Light in September. However, insiders have told THE FIX that announcement is now expected to be held until the week of August 3. CBS executives have informed production companies they want to look at more pilots before making their choice."

I believe the only other pilots (that we knew about ) were LMAD and The Dating Game. While that fact that Pyramid is casting is a good sign…with less than 2 months until the presumed premiere date of Sept. 21, Embassy Row likely has no choice but to move forward, with or without a pick-up announcement, so they can hit the ground running if they DO get picked up.

Hopefully, it's a case of Pyramid being a go and CBS is waiting to see TDG pilot before deciding on the other green light.
But these are network executives…they're all a bit nuts! They could always decide to put repeats of Numb3rs or Craig Ferguson in that slot!

I'm really looking forward to see this coming to CBS this fall. Anyone know when/where you can get tickets to see it taped?

  67. Dontryl Alexander Said,

All I'm predicting is the $1,000,000 Pyramid will be on the CBS daytime schedule by a landslide, but I can say is keep your fingers crossed; because I would love to see Pyramid and Let's Make A Deal on CBS Daytime. No way I would not see The Dating Game on the schedule; not going to happen.

Posted on July 24th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

  69. Neville Said,

I'm sure this goes without saying, but be sure to post here when the calls start coming! It might be an early sign of confidence from CBS :)

  70. DeVares Said,

I highly doubt if The Dating Game will make the CBS schedule. If they were to possibly revive it, it would either end up on GSN or syndication (if it's the case of the latter, it will probably end up on the Fall 2010 roster).

  71. Craiggers Said,

I've seen a couple of episodes of Craig Ferguson. No offense to the guy, but I don't know how well his show would work in a 10a or 3p time slot. Yes, it's funny as hell, but the censors would have a field day with CBS if it were on so early…

  72. Myke25 Said,

Sorry Craiggers…I was just kidding about that…(kinda)!
Damn me for not putting a smiley face after that comment!

  73. Craiggers Said,

Don't worry about it Myke25. I just wanted to say that although I love Ferguson, I really don't think CBS would move him to daytime. He'd probably have to be watered down so that the housewife and retiree daytime crowd can tolerate him (without getting fined).

And, to make sure there's no hard feelings…. :-) (a smiley of my own)

  74. Craig Said,

Whew! For a moment I thought my namesake was getting downplayed like that.

And honestly, my namesake friend, how many housewives actually WATCH daytine TV these days now that most of them are probably working for a living(except those that are "unemployed")? I'll give you the retirees angle on that since those ads that appear on TPIR these days ARE catered to them.

  75. Raine Said,

There's an article elsewhere saying CBS chose the Wayne Brady hosted Lets Make A Deal over The $1,000,000 Pyramid. I'm pretty pissed about this since the crappy LMAD remake NBC tried a few years ago bombed so badly.

  76. Dontryl Alexander Said,

Well, I won't be watching LMAD. What's next for Pyramid, are there thinking about place the pyramid on network primetime or syndication?

  77. Myke25 Said,

Actually Dontryl, Pyramid fans need to support LMAD. If it bombs, CBS may well turn the time back over to affiliates and not try another game show. For Pyramid, or any other game show, to have a decent shot at landing on a network schedule, LMAD has to succeed. If LMAD is a hit, other networks may follow suit and Pyramid would, I think, have a good chance at getting on the air.
