“Slumdog Millionaire” Wins Best Picture Oscar
Last night was very special for game show and movie fans alike. Slumdog Millionaire, a movie based on a young man going on the Indian game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and exceeding people’s expectations, arousing the suspicions of the game show host and of law enforcement officials, won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It’s pretty staggering that a movie with a giant image of the most popular game show of all time won it, so an huge amount of congratulations to them. From my standpoint, it’s even more staggering that the director of 28 Days Later, Danny Boyle, won a Best Director for this movie, so again, congratulations to all.
I haven’t had a chance to see the movie yet, sadly. I’ve decided to spend me theater time enjoying such classics as Friday the 13th instead which I openly regret. So I’m curious if you’ve seen the movie what you thought of it. It got a bit of attention, but it was severely downplayed in the game show community for some reason; something I’m extremely guilty of as well and sorely regret. I’ll definitely be seeing it this weekend, so I’m extremely curious as to your opinion of the movie. It’s always looked fantastic; I just apparently like machetes more than real human emotion.

I guess you’ve just been too busy reporting on the latest cat game shows to realize the global phenomenon this movie has been for the past some months. If Millionaire returns to prime time, this film will play the leading factor.
I saw this movie and found it very impressive, the way they threaded three storylines–the game show, the police interrogation, and the contestant’s life up to that point. I liked the Bollywood dance number at the end, which is typical of that style, even if it isn’t familiar on our shores. And the depictions of slum life in India were pretty startling. But overall, I enjoyed how the questions asked pertained to the contestant’s life.

I found this film very offensive and actually walked out.
So it’s come to this: We’ve now outsourced the Oscars to India. jk
Yes, I saw Friday the 13th. I was disappointed they made Jason the killer, since it was supposed to be a remake of the first.
Oh wait… you didn’t mean seeing that movie.
‘Slumdog’ is good, vibrant entertainment, but I really don’t understand all of the massive praise that it has gotten throughout the awards season. There were other films released this year that were as good, if not way better.
This was a well done, good film. However, I must say, how the Academy could award original song and, particularly, original score to it is baffling. You mean to tell me the 40 minutes of music in Wall-E with no dialogue but propelled the movie and made you understand and feel was not as good as Slumdog? It shocked me that the Academy didn’t vote for Wall-E for those awards, especially since it was dissed for Best Picture.
I’m with Chris on this. While I believe ‘Slumdog’ should have received “Best Picture,” I’m having trouble with some of the smaller categories such as “Sound Mixing” and “Soundtrack.” This is probably politically incorrect to say, but I think the Academy jumped on its opportunity to reward an Indie film (let alone one once slated to go straight-to-video) and was too awed by a foreign cultural movie.
