Set Report from “The $1,000,000 Pyramid”
CBS recently shot a pilot for their new daytime game show The $1,000,000 Pyramid, an update of the classic 80s game show The $100,000 Pyramid. Again, like most news-worthy things, it happened while I was on vacation. Many of you may already know about it but for those that don’t, you’ll be very happy to know the show was updated perfectly from the old version to today.” Thanks to audience member Mitch J. for the info and pictures. This entire pilot and potential show is just validating my point that Embassy Row is the only production company I place all my trust in to make a good, exciting, fun game show anymore.
The game is exactly like the old version. Two teams of a contestant and a celebrity pick one of six categories. Your celebrity partner has to try to describe up to seven items in that category to you in 30 seconds. After three rounds of this, the most points goes to the Winner’s Circle. There one member of the team must list things in a category. Each correct guess from the other team member earns money, and going all the way to the top of the Pyramid earns the game’s top prize. In the current version, the first win of the Pyramid earns $25,000 and the second time is $50,000.
Tim Vincent was the host for one of the days of pilot shooting . He was also the pilot host of GSN’s old game show Chain Reaction and he recently guest hosted a week of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. He’s not that bad but I’d be stunned if he went further than this. The other host was actor Dean Cain who doesn’t seem to be doing much of anything recently. I’ve got no personal opinion since I haven’t seen either, but Mitch said about Tim, “Did a capable job… relied on prompter a lot; chalk it up to being day one. His British accent caused a couple of pick-ups to be done, a couple in particular included when a category was Mamma Mia (he said Ma-Ma Mia, and the other with a description of a category being homophones (he would say Homo-phones and picked it up as ha-ma-phones).”
I’m pretty happy the core of the show stayed the same this time around. The last Pyramid revival a few years back, done by Sony Pictures, had the production team do everything they humanly could to change the format in some way. It never worked so they took it back to essentially the old format. It’s nice to see there’s no messing around here and it goes straight for the old style. There’s a “League of Champions” to play for the $1,000,000. That wasn’t really touched upon.
As you can see by the set picture, they went with the old looking set updated a bit for modern times. I’m sorry but I have to laugh a bit at some people who wet themselves over the fact they are using trilons, or those flip boxes, instead of monitors. The trilons have to be cheaper to just slap on the one-time-only pilot than buying, mounting, and wiring about 15 monitors, which will be used for the long-run in the actual series. It’s just simple economics and budgeting, as well as the pilot process. Just another case of, “It’s 2009, welcome to new technology!” Just expect the current trilons on the set to convert to monitors by the time the series pulls around. Go cheap for now and plan for the long-run later.
Everything seems fantastic about this. From what I’m hearing from insiders, I wouldn’t be shocked to see The $1,000,000 Pyramid be picked up for a daytime run, but stay tuned to news. The show would have to debut in a few months when CBS’s Guiding Light burns out, so the Pyramid may be back on television once again very shortly.

Myke25: LOL!!!!!! I completely agree with (once again).
Steven: The biggest problem I have with your idea is the same one that I had with the 2nd Donnymid tournament. Anytime the big money is not guaranteed, viewers (and probably big whigs) get annoyed. However, since the show now has the amount in the title (again), you HAVE TO guarantee it. I mean it doesn't look right. The big draw for "The $100,000 Pyramid" was that the big money way guaranteed. If it isn't guaranteed, why even bother?
Thank you! I mean seriously, is there a problem with just keeping it $25,000 for the first climb, $50,000 for the second climb; and the tournament at the end of the season gives away $1,000,000? I don't see why we need to overcomplicate this thing.
Plus I don't understand some of the comment saying that $1,000,000 is too much for daytime. It's not our money. If CBS can afford it, let them. It's not like it hurts the show in any way. It only makes it more exciting.
Alex: Yes…I totally agree. In 1973, $10,000 was huge money. But "The $10,000 Pyramid" did it…so, why not? I also think that the structure should not be complicated…why ruin a great thing? BTW, is it only one tournament or several (held during sweeps time)? Lastly, I've read through the grapevine that the show was (in fact) picked up, and will debut on 9/21. Any truth to that?
Thinking about it, I retract most of my post. Kill the middle tournament, up the consolation cash in the finals, and play the finals to the end. I'm just not sure they'd want the end of year tournament to last more than two weeks is all
They'd account for that. As I said, and (apparently) Alex agrees with, keep it simple. Your idea is way too complicated. Messing with a classic is the first step in ruining it.
There can be some degree of control over that. The subjects on the big pyramid are not chosen at random. At the beginning of the tournament, they don't want a winner on the first try. So, you'll see subjects like "Words that rhyme with 'Orange'". As they get later into the tournament you'll see subjects become much easier.
I remember one $100K tournament that went longer than 2 weeks. I agree that would be too long. I was exhausted watching it. But I did like that fact that the $100K could theoretically be hit during any trip to the winner's circle.
I think they did that on the John Davidson $100k pyramid
Hi Jay. Where did you read that?
Just on the small pyramid…and only in the second season. And it was a push effect, rather than a "turn".
The one question is still on everyone's mind… Who's going to host the new Pyramid?
Myke25: I liked that part too (that it could happen anytime).
As for "Words that rhyme with Orange"…nicely done! (since there aren't any) :)
Well, if our choices are Tim Vincent and Dean Cain…I'd like to see Cain get it. But with Wayne Brady hosting LMAD and Drew Carey hosting TPIR…maybe they should look at Greg Proops or Brad Sherwood. Both have MC experience. :-)
Here's more pics from the set courtesy of someone on photobucket. I Googled "$1,000,000 Pyramid" and here is was…

My name is Kevin. Apology. haha.
One more thing: I apologize RenoGSFan. I should've read first. I didn't see that youalready put the link up. My apologies again.
I don't think it's set in stone. It was about a week ago, and I don't remember exactly where I read it. I think it was a on GSN chat thread…but, please don't quote me on that. You may be able to google it if you put in the title of the show and the date (September 21).
I still think Todd Newton would be a great pick…but that's just me.
This is where I read it…not sure if it's true or not. If I misread it, I apologize…

I think our good friend Steve Beverly would be right there with you, Jay. And Todd has some history with the Stewarts. I'm sure he would do a good job, but they (CBS) might be looking for a bigger name…especially if Wayne Brady is hosting LMAD and it gets picked up. As good as Todd is, unless you watch GSN or E!, you probably don't know who he is. Great talent…poor name recognition. If Todd was in the picture, he'd have likely done one of the pilots already.
So, if it's not Vincent or Cain…maybe Todd would have a shot. I think Marc Summers could do Pyramid justice, too.
As long as they say, "Here is your first subject…GO!", I'm happy! :-)
Myke25: I am DEFINITELY with you on the "Here is your subject…GO!" issue. Some people may not think it mattered that Donnymid never had it. But game show fans from way back know that classic game shows have catch phrases…and, that was The Pyramid's catch phrase. It's like PB & J! :)
I also agree (and understand about Todd Newton's poor name recognition…although (if I remember correctly…and please correct me if I am wrong) he auditioned for TPIR when Bob Barker retired. However…what about Jeff Probst? EVERYONE knows him from Survivor…AND, he did a great job on Rock & Roll Jeopardy. The only thing I see getting in the way is the schedule. But, don't most game shows tape ahead of time? I could easily see him doing Pyramid around Survivor's schedule. After all…Dick Clark hosted Pyramid for YEARS while still doing American Bandstand…so I think that could work.
Todd did audition for TPIR…and I hear he did a pretty good job. He hosts the live TPIR casino stage shows . He knew the gig better than anyone who auditioned…and still didn't get it. I could see Todd doing LMAD. I hope he gets a shot at a network or syndicated show someday…if anyone has earned a shot, it's Todd. But they are testing actors and comedians (and Tim Vincent) for these gigs.
Probst is out of the country for weeks at a time doing Survivor. CBS will keep him in the jungle as long as he's willing to swat mosquitoes. But I hope he's at the head of the audition line when Alex Trebek retires from Jeopardy!
Dick Clark's Pyramid taping schedule was a killer…especially in the 80s when both Pyramids were five-days-a-week. I read once that the reason he never hung around on the set during the credit roll was he would immediately hit the phone taking business calls.
CBS has to make the hosting decisions for both shows (Pyramid and LMAD) soon…premiere week is just a couple of months away. And they haven't officially announced pick-ups, yet.
CBS will keep Probst in the jungle as long as he's willing to swat mosquitoes. He's on location half way around the globe for weeks at a time. That makes a weekday strip gig problematic at best.
Todd did audition for TPIR. He hosts the live TPIR casino shows. He knows the games forward and backward…and still didn't get the gig. They're testing actors and comedians for these shows. I hope Todd gets a shot on a network or syndie game…he's earned it.
Sorry for the double post, everybody. I didn't see the earlier one get posted.
All I can say is hope and pray for the return of 7-11 and Mystery 7. I wish they could bring back Gamble For A Grand because I kind of like that bonus game. They should upgrade it to $5,000 and called it Gamble for Five Grand.
Yeah, as long as they don't bring back that "Double Trouble" format fron the 1991 version, I can live with Gamble for $5K.
According to Steve Beverly's e-mail column, CBS will announce whether Pyramid and LMAD will be picked up on Wednesday, July 22nd.
And I'm sure Alex will post this as soon as he gets the word. Thanks for trhe heads-up.
I've been flat out denied this from CBS. So unless he has some magical mystery source that I'm not aware of, and I doubt that, it's not confirmed. It may happen, but as of now CBS saying they haven't heard anything about a Wednesday announcement.
Oh God, I wish it was true, but I just hope and pray CBS picks up Pyramid on the announcement next week.
Same kingdom.
That's the trouble with people like him. He THINKs he has news from a reliable source ONLY to have it "shot down" in flat out denial. If & when CBS says something, Alex will let us know. Please, DO NOT take anything that Perfesser guy says at face value.
