“Set For Life” Debuts July 20th

It’s been a rather large failure in the two countries it’s aired in (UK and Netherlands). ABC shelved it for roughly a year. Why not bring it out? Hot on the failures of National Bingo Night and Show Me the Money comes Set For Life. According to our friends from UKGameshows.com, in Set For Life‘s first round the team has to pick one of eleven numbers; if it turns red they lose money and if it’s white they win money. The only catch is that one player picks numbers and the other makes the decision to play or stop while they are in a booth and cannot see anything going on. If the team made any money in round one they move to round two where the roles are reversed. The money won in round 1 is the amount of money that can be won for a certain period of time. There are now 15 numbers; if it turns red they move down the time scale and if it’s white they move up the same scale. It’s nearly impossible to win the game because you have to have balls the size of Alaska really, but there you go.

I am really sick of the Deal or No Deal ripoffs. I don’t think we’ll be saying “Man, I wish Bingo Night was still on” for this one, though. Yes, it’s the same brainless luck but at least this show involves a tiny bit of risk. You have to have some guts to play the game unlike Bingo Night contestants who just press a button and make a 50/50 decision repeatedly. Will this be better than Show Me the Money? At least from what I’ve seen from the UK version of Set For Life, I highly doubt it. However, who knows. Maybe our bigger budget will make it more exciting. We can only hope. To basically stop really excited people: this basically is a burn-off of the episodes. Set For Life was supposed to air in December and they held off this long. The only way this is returning is if it gets ungodly ratings. Will it? Judging by the other Deal or No Deal ripoffs, I highly doubt it. I’m wishing we’d have more 1 VS 100 ripoffs. I know we have a quite a few UK readers. Should we be afraid of this show?

Slight correction; the round 1 decisions are mutual, with both players on stage, one picking the numbers and one revealing the red/white light (hidden within rather shiny silver cylindrical holders). Then one player is sent to the isolation booth, making decisions independently of the on-stage player (and the first bailout counts regardless).

I give it three weeks before cancellation. I was at a taping for this, and frankly only enjoyed it at all because the warm-up guy was great.

I liked Jimmy Kimmel on “Win Ben Stein’s Money” and his late-night show is just as entertaining as well. I hope “Set For Life” does well for Kimmel. If “The Price is Right” were on ABC instead of CBS then Kimmel could have been in the running as Bob Barker’s successor.

I’ll give “Set for Life” a chance. I try to catch at least one episode of a new game show, so I’ll be watching it no matter what.

Kimmel is a decent guy who, from what I’ve read and heard, is a hard worker and gives 110% in any of his efforts. Even if this show stinks, Kimmel should find a way to rise it above the cesspool.

I agree. I dont think it will last at all. The ONLY successful ABC primretime game show so far has been Millionaire (and The Mole for those who count that as well).

$how me sucked; there was so much delay of revealing scrolls and the Shat’s legendary pauses between each word.

Bingo is too boring and annoying. You got the typical overhyped contestants and a host that I think is trying to be too much of a Howie. Though I’ll give props to bingo for letting people at home play along. Which is way better than texting in that costs $.99 each.

Set for life… Jimmy has the hosting experience, but again I don’t think it will last long.

The ONLY way ABC will have a hit game show is Super Millionaire.

I only have 5 minutes left on my break so I’ll just say,

You know Alex, It’s possible to win any game no matter how difficult and how much courage you need. But, I pretty much agree that even though I’ll give this a chance, I doubt it will last long, unless Jimmy really brings down house here.

Like I’ve said before, how long before ABC throws it’s hands up and just brings back PrimeTime Millionaire like they should have?

How many more episodes of National Bingo Night does ABC have left to air on Friday nights before it’s replaced by Set for Life?

  • Brandon says:

I believe NBN airs for six episodes. If so, we have three more.

Just the fact that this show has sat on a shelf all season sends up all sorts of red flags for me. Kimmel may be the only saving grace if he doesn’t take things too seriously…and he likely won’t.

  • Greg says:

This show will end like all the others. I’m afraid it might be too late for ABC. They should stick with “Housewives”, “EMHE”, and “The Wonderful World of Disney”.

  • mrquiz says:

For those who have tired of “DOND,” if you’re planning on starting an office pool on when “NBN” will finally get yanked, and would rather read their local Yellow Pages cover-to-cover, then watch the three unaired episdoes of “Show Me the Money” on GSN, let’s get real on one thing: (if I remember correctly, it was ) George Harrison who once said that the Beatles would never reunite as long as John Lennon remains dead. Well, as far as I’m concerned, game shows as we fondly remember them will never be the same as long as Mark Goodson remains dead!
