Scott and Jane Couper Win £137,000 on “The Exit List”

If you missed last night’s episode of The Exit List, ITV’s criminally mistreated quiz show airing Tuesdays at 8:00PM UK (3:00PM ET), you missed one hell of a game that you may want to catch up on.  In the series fifth episode we saw what was just about as perfect a game as you’re going to get.  Contestants Scott and Jane Couper, from Milngavie, took an astounding £137,000 out of the Memory Maze and became the biggest winners yet of the Matt Allwright hosted game.

Scott and Jane, as we said before, played nearly a perfect game save for one Panic Room.  The couple traveled through ten rooms, including the jackpot £100,000 room, and never missed a question.  One of the rooms was a Panic Room, and the the Coupers only missed one item resulting in a Panic Code of just the number two.  Jane was selected to recite the Exit List and make her way out of the Memory Maze with £137,000.  Scott was offered £55,000 by the Maze to end the game, but he trusted in his wife and the team collected the prize.  The Coupers are the second couple to leave with six figures and became the biggest winners. Jenny and David Bentley, on the first episode, won £100,000.

Check out the episode below.  We’re looking forward to seeing the ratings.  The Exit List deserves a lot more than it’s getting.  I can see why High Stakes was moved to Tuesdays, but I’ve got no clue why The Exit List was.  The set is awesome, the music is amazing, and the game has great play-along and I’ve yet to see an episode that wasn’t pretty exciting.  I don’t get it.  Image and video courtesy ITV and Gogglebox Entertainment.

I’m kind of amazed that they did as well as they did. I thought the strategy of veering off to the right like that might minimize your category selection options (compared to staying in the middle and always having 2-3 blocks from which to choose).

The main thing is, you want to enter the back row as far to one side or the other as possible, giving you the best chance to find the 100K room (since you cant backtrack)- the other rows might have some money but it’s peanuts compared to the back row. The first episode was a perfect example- they lost 15K when they got blocked in the next to last row, but entered into the back row on the extreme left side- so theoretically they could have gone through all 7 rooms if they wanted to if they didn’t find the 100K early on (of course the Exit List would have probably been too difficult had they had to do that- plus there were Panic Rooms and the fact that they might not have gotten the question right in the 100K room- though it did work out for them)

This is what I’ve been saying all along. Great music, sound effects and gameplay. There’s a perfect mix of tension and comedy. This would be a perfect fit for ABC, especially since they’ve already picked up a Pilot Episode for it. If the UK doesn’t like the show, bring it over here and see how it does in America. I’ll be watching it, that’s for sure. :)

I agree with Scott. This would be a perfect fit for ABC’s Friday night schedule. My fear is that this thing could be “Americanized” (see the disaster known as “The Million Dollar Money Drop,” I could talk volumes about that.

First question, who would host? The fault with the US is that we have not created a crop of, as they say in the UK, presenters, whose only job is to host.

Second, would ABC be happy with just the money levels the UK has? Would they be tempted to go, say $100 on row 5 and $1M on row 6?

This game, just as it is, is perfect. All they need is a great host and 8-9/7-8 Central on Friday. Any ideas?

    • Scott says:

Well, ABC’s Friday night schedule is currently filled with Shark Tank, What Would You Do? and 20/20, so one of those would have to leave to open a slot for The Exit List.

I know what I would do! Get rid of What Would You Do? What about you?

Knowing how ABC works, they’ll most likely place The Exit List on Tuesdays or Thursdays at 9 pm ET, right after Wipeout. Which day depends on whether or not Expedition Impossible is renewed…

As for the format…not sure… Can you see ABC renaming it as “The Million Dollar Exit List” and then placing $1 Million in one of the back rows. And then the ABC executives crying out in terror when it looks like the first team on the first episode is about to win $1 Million, even though it’s paid out over 40 years…

Typical ABC, they never learn, do they… Don’t create a Million Dollar Game Show and not expect to give away the million.

I kinda resent the huge spoiler here. Can’t you please not give away the result in the title and let us folks a bit behind on our game show watching know the post is a spoiler alert?

  • STI says:

I have to say—the ending ranks up there with anything you’ve brought us from British DOND.

The look on Scott’s face as Jane is coming up to meet him is absolutely priceless.

  • Morgan says:

There’s one thing that I’m wondering: if I’m not mistaken, the other couples who hit the £100k room only had the chance to exit with just that £100k? So why did they get to leave with the money they accumulated before hitting the £100k as well?

    • Lucas says:

The pair from the first episode had got blocked in the corner and after another wrong answer they were at a dead end, so to continue the game they had to surrender all the money they had got in their case at the moment. Coincidentally, very first question they later answered correctly was worth £100,000 – so they decided to leave the Maze immediately.
