“Power of 10″ Pickup Nearly Certain

This comes from the desks of B&C (We meant to get this up early early early this morning but I was out): CBS has apparently picked up the new Michael Davies game show Power of 10 for Fall 2007. We tend to trust B&C, and the only reason it’s nearly certain is because CBS will announce their official pickups tomorrow morning, so be on the lookout for official word tomorrow.

The Power of 10 is basically Super Family Feud, people try to find out what a national survey said to a question to win up to $10,000,000. Can we declair the prize war on? Deal or No Deal has already gone to a $6,000,000 top prize. We can’t be far off from a $10,000,000 top prize. The only thing that’s keeping me from absolutely anticipating this show is that it is a Michael Davies show. No offense to any Embassy Row staffer (or anyone else), but he has no “good” shows. They are all either great (See Drill, 2 Minute) or shit (See Reaction, Chain).

I hope G-T or Fremantle doesn’t sue. Maybe they’ll get O’Hurley to host.

Oh, come on. The new Chain Reaction isn’t very good, but it isn’t shit. The host on the other hand…

  • Alex Davis says:

Oh I totally beg to differ about the show. The host is a big part. The gameplay is broken and boring. The bonus round is broken and easy. The set is awful. The music is awful. The payouts are pathetic. The contestants, on average, have the IQ of a mouse. I can’t honestly pick out anything good with what they have with the game right now. There’s a good show hiding somewhere. It’s just hidden by all the bad things, which is 95% of the show. Note I’ve never seen the classic or basically anything with Bill Cullen, so I’m not comparing shows. I’m basing this off my own opinion. My opinion that it’s one of the worst shows I’ve seen in ages and quite possibly one of the worst revivals ever.

Seems to be a hit-or-miss thing; he tweaked Mastermind into 2-Minute Drill and became a 3-season hit; he tweaked Chain Reaction and the results haven’t been so hot. Who knows with this coming show…

I do agree with you for the most part on the new CR. Still, after seeing ‘Strip Poker,’ ‘Taboo,’ and 90 percent of GSN’s original shows pre-2000, the new CR doesn’t seem that bad.

  • Greg says:

To CR crew: Why don’t you ask Bob Stewart for help? Make your CR a bit more like Cullen’s CR! Heck, get Drew Carey to host CR (he looks like Bill Cullen).

  • Measles! says:

You’re dreaming Greg. Anything that would actually IMPROVE Chain Reaction: WTF, would never happen. Knowing our luck, those crackheads over there are planning to make the show an even bigger steaming pile of mastodon dung

  • Greg says:

I know. Chain Reaction now is nothing, I mean NOTHING compared to the original. They didn’t even bother remixing the Cobert theme. They don’t have celebrities either. It’s nothing like the Cullen version.

  • myke25 says:

Chain Reaction wasn’t that great back in the Cullen era, either. The bonus round in that show went through 3 different prize structures during its run. What was most surprising to me that Bob Stewart loved the “building a sentence one word at a time” concept so much, he built an entire series around it…”Go.” But I think the absolute worst revival was Pat Bullock’s Card Sharks. Painfully bad.

The Power of 10 is going to be great if done the right way! I know it is similar to Family Feud, but you know what, a lot shows throughout history have had concepts, or just game elements that are just like Family Feud. The thing is, they didn’t try to be the exact same show and that’s why some of them worked, granted some of them didn’t, even though there were good shows IMO (ie: Hot Potato), I feel good about The Power of 10.

Hey Myke, if you see Pat and Tammy, bang them over the head with clip chips for me. :p

  • Greg says:

Well, I think the “$100K” bonus round from the Cullen era might work on this show. Just remix the Cullen era theme, have 1 celebrity and 2 contestants, and maybe something else.

  • dropzone5 says:

One thing that we all have to remember…without Match Game, there’d be no Family Feud; Feud was essentially a spin-off of the Super Match.

As for the Power of 10…this could possibly be the easiest $10 mil to make on national TV. IMHO, I think all the game show creators are trying to create the show with the biggest top prize possible (I’m with you there, Alex, about the “prize wars” being on). A huge top prize doesn’t exactly mean it will be a successful show (or even a good one); just look what happened to Identity, a show with a main game that seemed more suited to being a bonus round and a $500,000 payout…or, for that matter, 5th Grader.

Chain Reaction isn’t THAT bad game-wise, from what I’ve seen (save the bonus round)…it’s the contestants, notably the bad ones, that make it unwatchable. Plus, the bonus round was made WAY too easy these days. If there were smarter contestants, we wouldn’t have this problem…

  • Greg says:

I think you are right. Embassy Row shouldn’t produce CR. Let Basada handle it. (Basada is Bob Stewart’s production company.) Get smarter contestants and smart celebrities.

  • Greg says:

Welcome to the Power of 10, where the cash doesn’t matter. Yeah, the cash matters like my sitcom career.

  • Intelligentfan777 says:

    OH, Will You Stop?!

  • Andy says:

Is Drew Carey is the “Power of 10″ host?

Ah, you all forgot about “Super Millionaire” from a couple of years ago. That deserved a longer run. And that was a Michael Davies-produced show.

Oh, and remember “Pepsi’s Play For a Billion”?

Good article on current game show trend:

Will This Golden Age of Game Shows Last?

  • Greg says:

According to GSNN, Drew Carey will host “Power of 10″. Lighten up, Intelligentfan777. It’s all good.

  • Intelligentfan777 says:

Will the new Golden Age continue?

If the new Syndie shows succeed and some of the New Primetime shows are done well and succeed as well, I think it will, I certainly hope it does!
