The Newlywed Game logoWe’ve got a good “rumor” for all fans of GSN’s revival of The Newlywed Game, and I’d place money on it.  Sources are telling me that the show has been renewed for a second season.  That’s not a big surprise as the show had one of GSN’s biggest debut weeks in the history of the rebranding from Game Show Network to GSN.  Not only that but the show’s been near the top of the ratings chart each week so it’s been popular overall.  The surprising part is that apparently the show will move from its season one base of New York City to its new home of Los Angeles for the next one.  It’s a bit surprising seeing as Michael Davies and his production company Embassy Row, who do Newlywed Game, do all of their shows out of New York.  I’m hearing word that it’s not necessarily because of studio space, but we’ll try to officially find out.

Reaction for the show has been understandably mixed, but I do think it’s one of the better revivals of The Newlywed Game that I’ve seen, and this comes from someone who really overall does not enjoy The Newlywed Game.  No one can compare to the original host Bob Eubanks and there’s no point in trying to make a comparison, but Carnie Wilson, the current host, does the second best job with the format that I’ve seen.  Her on-camera rapport suffers from trying to squeeze the interesting part of the show, the actual main game, into a 15 minute portion to get the new bonus round in.  As we’ve said repeatedly the bonus game is not working that well and edits Carnie down to little more than question-reader.  At least in my opinion it would be best to ditch the entire end game next season and use the extra time to give Carnie a bit more personality.  Show the audience what we saw in the studio.  If they want to work the Goldywed couple, a former competing couple from the show’s past, into the format, try to fit them in the main game somewhere.

I’m not really a fan of any version of The Newlywed Game.  It’s just not a format that agrees with me.  However, its main and only purpose is to make me laugh.  If it does that, I’m happy.  This version made me laugh, and that’s all I can ask.

I may be off on this, but I'm guessing the fact that Carnie Wilson just had her second child could be a reason as to why a second season would be filmed in LA. Wilson lives in southern California, and it's probably easier for her to keep close tabs on baby in SoCal.

I think they should have Bob Eubanks host one episode for season 2, just so he can say that he's officially hosted "The Newlywed Game" at least once in the past five decades.
(Note to Embassy Row: Bob only has to do one episode. Just one. Don't do what Fremantle Media did to Peter Tomarken's appearance on Whammy and have him relegated to doing only one round. Oh, and ditch the end game and person/people in charge of editing- such choppy work belongs on MTV or E!)

That's my thinking on that, my friend. Since Carnie's a SoCal lady, it'll suit her better there.

As for the game itself, instead of an end game, put the Goldyweds on either at the #1 or #4 spot so that we can have the classic 4-couple setup from the original.
