Rumor Control: ABC Picks Up International Dating Show “Take Me Out” for Pilot
Can’t completely confirm yet but this is all but positive right now. It looks like ABC has picked up the internationally successful dating game show Take Me Out. The show has been seen in England on ITV and around the world but it’s currently showing new episodes on RTL in the Netherlands. Learn about their version here.
They are currently looking for women to appear on the show. If you are interested click here. If you get selected you get $275 plus a trip to Amsterdam so you can’t lose. The real sign that this is Take Me Out is that the listing says it’s a Fremantle show, which this is, and that they are taping in Amsterdam where they have the set up and running currently. Can’t imagine it’s not it.
It’s a pretty straight forward dating show with a twist. Thirty single women each stand behind a lit up podium. A guy comes onto stage via an elevator to the song of his choice and describes himself. In round one, the women decide if they are interested in him just based off of this alone. If at any time they are not interested they turn the light off on their podium.
Various other rounds make the women decide to stay in the game or turn their light off and end it. If all 30 women turn their lights off the guy leaves without a date. If more than one women is left the guy gets to decide, but the only person with a light on goes on a date with the guy which is recapped next show. Take a look at the show from the video below.
I’ve never seen it so I can’t give an opinion, but maybe one of our British readers can fill us in?

Hm… Seems like it could be dumb enough to pick up ratings and strange enough to get me to watch it.
So what real incentive is there for a woman to turn off her light? People don’t go on these shows because of a real dating prospect, they just want face time on camera and a free trip or something.
They apparently can stay on as long as they want until they choose a date, so more camera time and another chance..
Mark my words – this will be a hit in America.
This will do well in America. Completely stupid show, but look how everyone watches The Bachelor and that’s a really stupid show. Any word on Six Minds, Trust Me, The Cube, or 1 vs. 100?
It’s gained a cult following here, so even though I think it’s quite obnoxious television (look up the review in ‘Weaver’s Week’ on UKGameshows.com for why) it will probably be a sizable hit for ABC.
Wonder if Paddy McGuinness will reprise his UK hosting role for this pilot.
It’s basically, 3/4 rounds, when one or more people is left, one of two things happen:
LAST WOMAN STANDING: If there is only 1 light left on at the end of the final round, they go on a date
ELIMINATION: More than one girl means the man CHOOSES who to go with by turning off the other lights.
No women left… no date
Another dating show? Come on! Just goes to show ya…people love the drama (and forthcoming gossip). I’m really starting to watch less and less TV…or at least more cable. While some new shows (for the Fall) look promising, shows like this are not on my list to watch.
I could see this show paired with “The Bachelorette” next summer. “True Beauty” lost half of its “Bachelorette” leadin (both overall and demo) this summer, and “Dating in the Dark” experienced similar problems last year. And when both shows lacked that leadin, the ratings plunged.
Not sure if this would work as a standalone — it would need help from an established show (in this case, “The Bachelor” or “Bachelorette”) to see if it has legs.
Was anyone else caught off-guard by the video’s title/title screen? Also, for some reason (I can’t think of it. I guess it’s a gut feeling), I don’t think the show will last that long. It’ll outdo HITW, but that’s about it.
It’s an upscale version of Baggage. Very original.

I was at the recording of the pilot episode, and yes, ABC will most likely be broadcasting the show. The show is slightly different from the dutch version, but will definitely be a lot of fun!
