Report: Fox Finished Taping “Million Dollar Money Drop”

This one is a shocker.  According to an audience report on Hollywood Junket, the American version of the hit UK game show The Million Pound Drop has already taped.  We were the only American news outlet who paid attention to this show when it first came out, so I’m glad to see it doing so well.  Fox’s version, called Million Dollar Money Drop, because adding Million Dollar before any title is the new cool thing to do, apparently taped for two days and around five episodes a day.  The show appears to be basically the same thing as the Channel 4 version.  Kevin Pollack, who hosted the allegedly rigged Fox game show Our Little Genius, hosts this one.

It does appear to be just about identical to the original.  In the Fox version of Million Dollar Money Drop, a pair of contestants is given 50 stacks of $20,000 (making up $1,000,000) to play with.  In the UK version, contestants are given 40 stacks of £25,000.  Contestants have to place all their money on drop zones corresponding to the answers, but they can split it up between the zones however they want if they need to.  The catch is you have to leave one of the drop zones open.  The first few questions have four choices, then three, and the final question has just two so it becomes a 50/50 decision.

The Fox version will only use seven questions.  The Channel 4 version uses eight.  After seven questions, if the team has any money left over they take it home.  It’s hard to win but it’s incredibly dramatic and if you realize that the point of the show is just damage control and you really won’t be winning the million most likely, it’s very fun.  So there we go.  Pretty exciting, isn’t it?  Million Dollar Money Drop is a very fun show and the sooner it gets on the better.

I just fear one thing.  Sorry if this makes people angry but it’s true: Americans are sentimental wimps.  We don’t like to see people lose everything constantly, and that’s the entire point of this show.  I guarantee you a vast majority, if not all but one, teams will leave with $0 and only one team will win a low six figure amount.  It’s the point of the show and it’s good.  If Americans can get over this, it’ll work out.  If people start to get extremely sad seeing everyone lose, it’s a goner.  Let’s hope people toughen up for it, because it’s a great show.  You can read another blog about it here and see how people get about seeing people constantly lose money.  If a majority of people can’t get over it, the show is doomed.

Don’t forget that the British version, The Million Pound Drop Live, is now casting and comes back in October.  We’ll be covering that extensively as it comes closer.

The only thing that will make me turn it off is if it takes 20 minutes between questions, or we see a bunch of morons agonizing over questions like:

Which of the following animals barks? A) house, B) car, C) dishes or D) dog

Oh no, it won’t, lol! The UK version uses questions pertaining to events that are happening as the show is airing. They asked questions about things that happened that morning, questions about things that occurred during the ad break, and things that are happening now. But since the American one is taped (though I would like for it to be a live East Coast taping), we might not see questions like that. But I’m sure they won’t be too easy.

I’m so glad we finally have an all-or-none game show in the US! It’s been, IMO, over 10 years since we last had one (I think the last proper all-or-none game show was Greed). I really dislike the wimpiness of American contestants. If you want to win big, you need to be willing to risk it all, which is what this show forces you to do; there’s no backing down, no assistance; there’s no “I need money for certain personal projects” thinking here: you either win or lose.

When will it be on tv for the first time

I will love watching it if it comes out because i’ve been watching the russian version

  • Andrew says:

MDMD might take over the time slot of the recently cancelled “Lone Star”.

    • DeVares says:

It won’t, Andrew. Fox already announced that reruns of Lie To Me (good show btw) will replace it. So, if it was to happen, it would probably be either after the World Series or when American Idol returns.

  • Artemis says:

So… not live. And not titled, simply, “The Million Dollar Drop.” This is why I’ll never work for FOX. Just bad decisions everywhere.

    • Mr. Fox says:

What a shame — because everyone at Fox is just dying to work with you.

    • DeVares says:

Of course. Prime examples are Moment of Truth, Fox News, the rigging of Our Little Genius, moving good shows to the Friday Night Death Slot, and (see Andrew’s comment below).

      • anonymous says:

Don’t forget cancelling The Rich List after one episode.

        • Mr. Fox says:

Yeah, Fox is nothing but terrible decisions. Like Ally McBeal.
          And That ’70s Show.
          And Joe Millionaire.
          And King Of The Hill.
          And Beverly Hills 90210.
          And the NFL.
          And The Simpsons.
          And American Idol.
It’s a wonder they stay in business with all these horrendous decisions.

      Point.

  • dropzone5 says:

We already got enough sob stories and obnoxious contestants on Deal or No Deal. I really don’t want any more on this show–and judging from the sound of the other blog, we’re going to get some.

  • Artemis says:

Just looked up Kevin Pollak on IMDB. His first film appearance was in “Million Dollar Mystery.” Talk about coming full circle.

  • James D. says:

Good to see Kevin Pollak getting another shot at a game show, as “Our Little Genius” was certainly not his fault.

Interesting read from both Hollywood Junket and the paid audience member — I’ll try and catch the premiere.

  • Saddened Fan says:

Interesting show to say the least.

Oh and as for the “Wimps”. Uh, The US version of Millionaire has over 80 $0 winners, the most of any version.

    Why do you hate America?

  • James E. Parten says:

If memory serves, the pilot of “The Cube” (the one CBS passed on—the one with Neil Patrick Harris) had two contestants who heard those dreaded words “Contestant Defeated!”. That’s one more than the entire first series of the UK version had!

Americans are more likely to “go for broke” (an expression that was known in Hawaii as early as 1935), and are not likely to play as conservatively as Brits. This will become apparent as and if we ever get out own version of “The Cube”.

    • Joshua says:

You do have a point, but we’ve have so many shows with safety levels, where contestants are guaranteed money even if they screw up royally. Minute to Win It is a good example; I can’t stand that show; it’s a really bad ripoff of a far better similar format of The Cube. Deal or No Deal was a prime example; the only reason they had two top prize winners was because of the MDM. I think the problem with the show was that the money offers usually got exponentially higher; Money Drop case, the money gets exponentially smaller.

  • Scott Meckley says:

Im looking forward to this show. It sounds exciting and i hope it is put in a good time slot say after American Idol. I wonder though how well it would do in the time slot that Lone Star was in.
