Reminder: Final Day of Nick GAS
As previously reported Nickelodeon GAS is ceasing production after 6am tomorrow (12/31) morning. This is your final chance to watch and DVR shows like GUTS, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Figure it Out, Get the Picture, Double Dare 2000, and Nick Arcade. While they say it’s going Broadband, for some reason I don’t think Viacom cares enough to actually go through with it. While the channel may be crap now, the shows are still golden and this is your last shot to see them.

Goodbye Nick Gas! As said in the article, the schedule might be crap but the shows on there were good and entertaining to watch.
OLMEC: “The Golden DVD of the last day of Nick GaS, can be found in the ShrIne…of the Silver Monkey!
Ben I think that said it all. ;) I can only hope it does go broadband so we can still enjoy these shows. If not they should highly consider releasing them on itunes ect. for download. R.I.P. Nick GaS
I rather watch Telletubbies then watch what they are showing on Nickeledeon right now. Nick GaS was a great channel and I don’t see why they canceled it. I don’t know about the rest of you guys about how Nick aires where you live, but here in Connecticut Nick has 5 different channels. The regular Nick, Nicktoons, Noggin, GaS (now The N), and another Nick channel, but this one is from the central or western time zone I’m not sure. They could of gotten rid of that one from the eastern side, I’m not sure what they would do for the central and western parts, but something tells me Nick and Viacom where too thick headed. Like Brent said, we should hope they put the shows on ITunes for people to download
Note: Viacom/Nick lied, its not online following the RIP of the cable network… :)
My household is so disappointed since we always watched and loved GUTS, legends of the hidden temple, Double Dare 2000, and more. Hope it comes back.
Pat: that other Nick would be the west coast feed. Just in case you missed a show three hours ago :P
K, thank you for telling me that. But like I said, I live on the east side in Connecticut so I don’t know that much about the time zones cause Im in the first part of the U.S time zone
I smell something shitty brewing about. I recall completely that Dish Network said that they confirmed they would have both Noggin AND The N as seperate channels on 12/31 and what do I see? Oh wow what were the odds? IT’s NICK GAS everybody….still on the air…for some reason…I can’t figure out. :|
There was a problem in the switchover to The N, so Dish is getting the Automated Feed of Nick Gas. Nobody knows when The N will take the channel over.
Hopefully never. I’d rather watch endless reruns of the My L’il Reminder ad over the N. It is just a combination of One Tree Hill & Gossip Girl. And I swear I saw two people making out during one of their ads.
Do you have anything against making out? Anyway, my cable system doesn’t even have the channel where Nick GaS used to be.
When I fired up the TiVo today, there was a message stating that The N had been added and Nick GAS was now gone. I didn’t watch it much anymore, but I certainly will miss it.
yah but what happened to the Broadband’ness of their reasoning when removing GAS?
I made the DVD but because of the channel sucking so much there was shows played the same twice. This is BS, Where is the broadband version of nick gas?
Echostar is still running Nick GAS off the automated feed, at least for now.
Nick GAS’s lineup look weird & boring since Double Dare left in Late Nov. 2004. sure its no longer on Digital Cable but its still on DISH satellite for now on.
Nick GaS became an extension of the former Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando FL. Nickelodeon felt it could create a “Hollywood” on the east coast, so it entered into some sort of agreement with Universal and built the studio complex.
Nickelodeon Studios was designed to host live action shows, such as GUTS, Legends of the Hidden Temple and the various incarnations of Double Dare. There were some regular shows recorded there too.
One of the problems Nickelodeon ran into was that celebrities had no intentions of relocating from Southern California to the Orlando FL area. This meant that Nickelodeon would have to fly people in from California, put them up in hotels and then fly them back out.
Another problem was that interest in the shows Nickelodeon produced (including live action shows) at the studios fell. Many were the days when Universal Theme Park was full of tourists, but very few people ventured over to the studio for a tour. With no interest in the programs and few visitors to the complex, many of the companies that had sponsored shows in the past decided to stop doing business with Nickelodeon.
All of the above problems (and maybe a few others) were just too much to overcome so in 2005, Nickelodeon folded their tents, turned off the lights in the studios for the last time, and walked away.
The live action shows, while entertaining, show their age much more than animated programs do. For example, hair and clothing styles (at least for guys) have changed since the 90s. This may very well be part of the reason Nickelodeon decided to focus on animated programs.
Depending on contractual arrangements, any residuals (the money paid to the hosts today for the work they did 15-20 years ago) could prove to be a deal breaker should someone desire to show GaS programs on another channel. The residual problem becomes worse for scripted shows.
No questions about it, Nick Studios and Nick GaS left their mark on a generation of kids. But time has moved on. Today’s kids will have their own things to look back on 15-20 years from now much like the kids of the 90s do today.
Just to continue with my post from February 25th. Over on youtube comments, posted on videos that involve Nickelodeon Studios and/or Nick GaS, tend to be very critical of Nickelodeon & Blue Man Group. Comments range from “Why did Nickelodeon take GaS off the air and move it to turbonick?” to “I hate Blue Man Group for what they did to Nickelodeon Studios”.
People are forgetting that Nickelodeon Studios was empty for over a year before Blue Man Group moved it. Without BMG and the other organizations that use the facilities now, Universal could have easily torn the buildings down and used the land for other purposes.
Today, the buildings are still doing what they were designed to do…..entertain people. The only difference is that Nickelodeon is not the one in there doing the entertaining. Nickelodeon simply could not sustain the vision that caused it to build the complex in the first place.
The studios could very well have been kept alive if:
1) Celebrities were willing to either relocate or live part time in the Orlando area.
2) Interest in the shows that were produced in the facility remained strong.
3) The number of visitors to the complex stayed strong or grew stronger.
With no source of new programming, Nick GaS was reduced to broadcasting a small number of shows with the same episode broadcasting 4 or 5 times a day and then repeating every 3 or so months. With no original programs, trying to get companies to advertise on GaS would have been a hard sell to say the least.
Faced with that reality, Nickelodeon moved GaS to turbonick and put “The N” in its place.
If Nickelodeon ever decided to go back to producing live action shows, it would be a safe bet that production would take place in southern California and not Orlando for the reasons mentioned above and in my comments from February.
Nickelodeon Studios and Nick GaS live on though memories, photos and recordings. Kids of the 90s have much they can look back on and remember their childhoods. Don’t forget that the Nickelodeon time capsule is still around and is scheduled to be opened in 2042.
fuck you asshole go to hell
wow, that is so stupid that they cancelled nick gas. i used to love those shows when i was a kid, and they are still good. i really hope that they decide to put nick gas back on to t.v. many kids are going to miss it. :(
i miss double dare, figure it out, and legends of the hidden temple already.
but i watch some of them on youtube(:
Nick GaS was taken off of Dish about a month ago.
Many of the comments critical of Nickelodeon folding GaS into Turbonick (as well as Nickelodeon's decision to close Nickelodeon Studios) seem to be posted by 90's kids. What needs to be pointed out is that 90's kids are no longer Nickelodeon's target audience (their younger brothers and sisters are). This new generation of viewers does not have the same taste in programming of their older brothers & sisters.
Cartoons and scripted comedies are their shows of choice vs. the game shows that 90's kids favor.
Nickelodeon & Disney Channel are simply giving their target audience the types of shows they want to see. 90's kids need to accept the fact that they have "aged out" of Nickelodeon/Disney Channel and let the networks focus on providing programs to their new viewers.
you jealous or something that these shows are better then your shows go fuck yourself douch fuck the new viewers and fuck you too asshole Nickelodeon studios forever go to hell fucker
Whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down there, there’s no need for language.
No amount of profanity-laced replies & childish behavior will change what happened and what is. Today’s kids are different than their counterparts from the 90′s. Nickelodeon & Disney Channel know this and are giving their target audiences the types of programs they want to see. Nick & Disney are no longer out to please “90′s Kids”.
Slight topic detour…
The Nickelodeon time capsule, which used to be located outside of Nickelodeon Studios, was moved to the Nick Hotel when Nickelodeon Studios closed back in 2005. Recently a visitor to the hotel posted a picture of the time capsule at its new home:
http://family.webshots.com/photo/2148704900031564…
If you compare this picture to some of the older pictures taken outside of Nickelodeon Studios, you'll see that the top looks different. I suspect that the new top was needed because the old top mentions Nickelodeon Studios, which no longer exists.
I totally miss Nick GAS. It was so fun to watch. But they should combine Nickelodeon and Teen nick because Nick GAS was so good. But the reason they got rid of it was because there weren’t enough people who wanted to go on it. But I miss it like CRAZY!!!! I don’t know where to find it. I guess YouTube but…
There are YouTube members who are posting videos of shows from Nick GaS. Right now the show with the most number of clips appears to be GUTS.
The problem with GaS was that it became an extension of the late Nickelodeon Studios. Just about all of the programs that aired on the channel were produced at the Orlando facility.
Due to the loss of interest in the game show format, a general loss of interest in Nickelodeon Studios by the network’s new viewers (Nickelodeon & Disney Channel are kids’ networks. They are no longer trying to appeal to the demographic known as “90′s Kids”), and actors refusing to move from Los Angeles to Orlando, Nickelodeon could not continue to produce any regular programming in Orlando.
So….with no new programs in the works for Orlando….Nickelodeon closed Nickelodeon Studios, moved production back to Los Angeles and automated Nick GaS. Towards the end, GaS was showing only a small number of programs and the same episodes aired several times a day. You really can’t keep a cable TV channel going with such a tiny amount of content.
Time had moved on. Nickelodeon (& Disney Channel) moved on. However….for Nickelodeon….Nickelodeon Studios & Nick GaS were remnants of the past and could not be brought along into the present & future.
I’m gonna miss nick gas if it wasn’t 4 the N (now teennick). i think i no why they cancelled nick gas because preschoolers wanted noggin (now nick jr.) 2 b longer. i don’t think we’ll b seeing nick gas 4ever.
With game shows out of favor with both the general public and advertisers, Nick GaS became a “dead” channel and could not be sustained.
Nickelodeon Studios was long gone and the same episodes of a small number of cancelled shows aired multiple times every day.
The decision was made to retire GaS and use the channel for other purposes.
