Ratings Updated: “Millionaire” Stays at Low

Who Wants to be a Millionaire? promo pictureAnother week has gone by and more ratings for the syndicated game shows have gone in.  The most striking of the ratings this week belongs to Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, which is still stuck at its 2.4 rating, which is the season low.  It’s been at this level for four of the past five weeks with basically no movement.  It’s a bit puzzling as to why this is happening.  Are people not embracing the new-ish format of the show as well as they did originally?  Or is it just other factors like age and other options out there.  The format changes weren’t remotely as game changing as first thought, so I can’t see it doing that.  We’ll see how the show does during sweeps.  It’s got a few big winners coming up apparently as well as the popular wedding week.  The show always bounces back and is no where near a scary rating level, mind you.  It’s just weird that it’s been stuck at the 2.4.

Deal or No Deal regained the number one slot raising 6% to a 1.9 for the week ending February 22nd.  The show’s been the number one rated new show this season overall, and has been number one for a majority of the season.  Still no word of a firm season two has been announced, though.  One of my favorites, Family Feud rose 14% to the season high 1.6.  The long-running show keeps in there even with the tough competition and looks to be around for a while.  It’s the little show that could; Fremantle barely promotes it at all.  Wheel of Fortune rose 3% to a 7.6 and Jeopardy! went up 2% to a 6.3.  Trivial Pursuit is just there, with a 0.6.

Why is “Millionaire” tanking? Here’s a thought…after nine years it’s out of gas. People are tired of it.

I know I am…GSN plays it to DEATH.

  • Eric says:

Please renew syndicated DOND for a second season. It’s a whole lot better than the soon-to-be-outta here primetime crap

  • V says:

Who Wants to Be a Thousandaire — this show is dull, dull, dull. They need to stop being so cheap. There is a ridiculous number of people who never make it past $25,000. That sort of cheapness is what we would expect from a small-time show like Catch 21 on GSN. But a big name show like WWTBAM, which once was the king of all game shows, nickel-and-diming its contestants is too dull to watch.

  • HomerJay says:

Nickel and diming them? First, it’s complaints about questions being too easy, now…what, they’re too hard? You just can’t win sometimes.

Whatever the reason for a (temporary?) lull (many shows have them), I doubt GSN is a significant factor. What contitutes a good showing on GSN isn’t necssarily going to move the needle for a broadcast show all that much.

Maybe The Young & The Resltess had some good plot going that pulled away Millionaire viewers in markets like New York and Philly. :-)

What is wrong with Millionaire? Did the clock lose some viewership in the now-classic show?

  • DeVares says:

I’m surprise that Deal or No Deal didn’t get a deal (no pun intended) yet. It’s likely that it will since no new game show has ever achieved a 2.0 ratings at some point in the season and not get renewed. I think the reasoning is that they wanted to wait until Howie recovers (which he did) to resume negotiations, so they could be word on it within weeks.

You can’t blame GSN for Millionaire sliding. You can, however, blame a number of other things like stations, like KTBS here in Shreveport, putting it up against (as HomerJay mentioned) The Young & The Restless. I love Y&R (yes, a brother loves soap operas. So sue me), but I love Millionaire just as much. Plus, the new clock isn’t doing the show justice. And to V: Millionaire was never the king of game shows, that honor goes to Wheel of Fortune.

Family Feud is still a very good show, and pulling a 1.6 isn’t too bad considering the competition, but it could be better if Fremantle promotes the show (example, they should’ve promote this week’s Big Money Tournament). I think Alex said a couple of weeks ago (feel free to correct me, Alex) that it’s been renewed for an 11th season and it’s good enough for one more. I think it’s good enough to go way beyond Season 12.

  • HomerJay says:

Interesting to me that this incartion of Feud has run so long, yet so flown so much under the radar compared to the first two versions. Just one of those funny things.

  • Chachi says:

somehow all the cosmetic changes to millionaire never excited me enough to tune in daily. it’s odd, i still enjoy the traditional quiz format of jeopardy, yet with the lure of big money on millionaire and changes in game play every couple of years to keep it interesting, i’ve never been compelled to follow it regularly. it was more intruging as an event, not as a regular show, either in prime time or syndicated.

Well, for those who do want to help push Millionaire in the Facebook world at least, there is a page to join, finally, at:
