Ratings Update: Carnie Wilson and “Hidden Agenda” Tanking

The sooner GSN can get rid of both Carnie Wilson’s reality show and the hidden camera game show Hidden Agenda, the better, quite frankly.  New ratings for the network’s big new original push and updated direction are in and they are rough.  These results are from the week of February 15th.  Remember, we previously posted debut week ratings which weren’t good to begin with.  They’ve gone a lot lower, and it’s very alarming for Hidden Agenda.

Hidden Agenda‘s first-run episode on Thursday, February 18th, sunk to a rather staggering low of 67,000 viewers.  This wasn’t a rerun, this was a brand new episode in primetime.  The only thing to rank below it that day was…Hidden Agenda‘s rerun at 11:00PM ET.  I was thinking it was potentially the poor lead-in from Carnie Wilson originally, but the show is just not clicking with people.  The show’s not that bad, it’s just nothing to write home about either.  I would be a bit alarmed about their new big push Instant Recall, which is a very similar show, if it wasn’t for Wink Martindale hosting.  They’ve been pushing Wink to the front of the press for this show, and that’ll trap in some classic fans, so it’s looking a bit more positive.

Carnie Wilson’s reality show is doing a bit better, but for all the promotion and fuss made over it, it’s still not that great.  New episode ratings, on Thursday February 18th, had 177,000 viewers watching.  Just by itself it’s not that great but when you factor in its partner show, Hidden Agenda, it’s passable.  Where it gets ugly comes from the marathon they did of it on Sunday, February 21st, in which they apparently decide to give it no press except to the people that watch the network that apparently don’t watch the show.  The first episode got 114,000 viewers and rapidly sunk each hour all the way down to 61,000 viewers.  Not a good sign.  They’ve got a few dating shows in the pipeline, two or three reality shows also, but next to no actual studio based game shows.  I’d be reconsidering.

But you have to hand it to Deal or No Deal, despite massive rerun everywhere and viewer burnout from new episodes, it’s still at the top of the network and basically the only thing keeping it floating.

No one, myself included, should be surprised by any of this. GSN branching out failed before, and it's gonna fail again.

I'm really starting to miss that G-T library. If GSN hadn't wasted their fortunes on this disaster, none of this would have ever happened. I don't even know if the G-T library will ever be on GSN, or any other cable outlet again.

As I said in another post on this blog, after "Hidden Agenda", what's next for GSN? A camera pointed at two people playing Go Fish?

Carnie's series never belonged on GSN (Fox Reality Channel, maybe). GSN is supposed to be, primarily, about GAMES. That's what created the demand for the network in the first place. GSN seems to be going through the same wilderness CNN is – they've forgotten their roots and are trying hard to be lots of different things.

GSN seemed to "get it" when they tapped Merrill Heatter to do "Catch 21" which is one of their best efforts to date. Even Wilson's "Newlywed Game" is watchable, if not exceptional TV. But they need to get back to the basics – emulate the G-T library or some other successful game show packager (Bob Stewart, Barry & Enright, et al) and come up with something with ALL the elements of a good show.

It's either that or lose viewers to YouTube … I spent a good half hour watching an episode of Bill Cullen's "Three On A Match" the other night!

GSN should be ashamed of themselves for even thinking these shows had a remote chance of doing well. Remember your name, GAME SHOW NETWORK!

    That is all.

  • CJ Horton says:

    Holy. Crap. 67,000?!!

What the hell more evidence do you need that this direction is NOT working?!

  • Steve Sadler Jr. says:

What a discgrace. GSN should be ashamed of themselves. Where's Card Sharks or other REAL game shows when you needed one.

Gone forever, along with the rest of the G-T library, all thanks to GSN's ignorance and arrogance.

No doubt GSN is still of the mind that it's all us "negative internet people" that are driving away all the viewers.

Is it really a surprise that these shows stink? I hate to say it, but maybe GSN should just drop any game shows they have, produce more of their own crap, and rename the network BSC (BS Central). They're finished as far as developing decent programming is, and the name would be much more appropriate.

I do not watch a lot of TV except for Game Show Network. It was a great way to settle down after a day of real estate sales. My grandchildren could cuddle up with me and watch. Not anymore….Carnie's mouth needs a good soaping with all the bleeps and the language knowing also that her small child is walking around obviously conditioned to this type of garbage. Maybe I am old fashioned but I believe in the protection of children in every way working continuely for Child Abuse Prevention. This is a form of child abuse in every sense of the word. I sincerely hope that you will go back to the old shows. Carnie is a beautiful woman on the outside but not from the inside out.
