Ratings Report: Poor “Deal or No Deal”

A new ratings report came in yesterday.  As the headline says, all you can think is, “Poor Deal or No Deal,” whenever you see the ratings these days.  No matter what the other shows do, even if everything else increases, Deal cannot seem to get any momentum whatsoever.  It’s almost like the viewers know it’s canceled and aren’t bothering to stick around anymore.  It had a not-so-nice drop for the week ending February 14th.  It went down 8% to a 1.1 rating.  It just can’t do anything no matter what they throw out there.  It went down 8% last ratings report also, so we’re down 16% during the sweeps period.  Not too good.

I really do like Deal or No Deal, so it’s a bit distressing to see it go out with a huge whimper like this.  Again, I do like it, I just don’t like what the American version became.  Apparently many who aren’t familiar with the international versions got equally as sick of it.  It started out on NBC as a nice, suspenseful, dark show.  Watch the repeats on GSN.  It’s a totally different show back then than it is today.  Deal can be summarized most easily today by a constant, never ending half hour of top-of-the-lungs screaming.  It’s become a circus.  Watching the show’s progress, it seems like the success of the show got out of the staff’s hands and they lost control of it somewhere along the line.  They held it back fine for the first few years, when it was most popular.  But again, somewhere along the way the brake lines were cut and it hit a brick wall.

As I said before, though, the other game shows did well.  Wheel of Fortune, always the top dog, slid barely enough to note.  It’s only down 1% to a 7.4.  Jeopardy! is doing nicely, up by 2% to a season high 6.4.  Millionaire is getting a new breath of life this season and went up 4% to a 2.7.  Those changes, plus the ABC season this past summer, seem to be working.  Speaking of that, anyone else shocked we haven’t heard about another primetime season of Millionaire since the last one did well for the summer?  Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? continues to impress, staying flat at a 1.7.  Family Feud had the nicest increase; up 7% to 1.5.

Poor Deal or No Deal……literally. The reason for it not having any momentum is because there have hardly been a big money winner this season. Almost everyone who wins on there wins barely 5 figures. So there you go. But it’s nice to see everyone else is doing well, especially Family Feud, which, if these numbers keep going up (and I think it will once Steve Harvey takes over in September), we’ll be seeing Feud for years to come. Wheel and Jeopardy!, they are 2 shows that, as long as there are game shows, will always be with us. And speaking of Millionaire, I (and I’m assuming other Buzzerbloggers) agree. The primetime revival last summer really gave the game new life. I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear another version coming this summer.

Where is the announcement of a new run of primetime Millionaire for this summer? It's still kind of early, but I really thought, in light of the success of last year's run, that it would return again this year. It had the feel of a strong summer tradition on ABC.

it's just a shame of what Deal as just become. RIP DOND (2005-2010).

However for everyone else, things look really great. What's even more sad is that after tomorrow's episode of DOND, my local station will dump it to 4 AM and a 2nd ep. of WWTBAM will be airing at 4:30 PM (It already airs a run at 4 PM.).

We'll miss you DOND. You were great when it lasted. Sadly NBC didn't learn from Millionaire or Weakest Link's mistakes…then again this is the same network that booted Conan and all. Surprising that Millionaire is still alive considering the controversial changes and the over saturation back in the day, but it's still a pretty good show. Wonder when ABC will do a prime-time special again? We always see the best of the show in prime-time. I'm also surprised that 5th grader is getting some praise nowadays.

I never was a huge fan of Deal, but I agree that the gimmicks and the over-excitement ruined the American version. I also put a tiny bit of blame on "the reruns on GSN", which have been SEVERELY over-shown (four times a day is way too many times, even if one of those is a repeat of the 7pm showing). Viewer fatigue almost killed Millionaire before the syndicated version, but it (and the above mentioned problems) undid Deal, and it's sad to see it as a hulk of what it once was. At least the other game shows have shown good results, and I'd love to see a new summer run for Millionaire on ABC.

All I can say for DoND is, it's been nice knowing ya! NBC bastardized you to the point where it became unwatchab. RIP DoND(2005-2010)

As for the others WoF & J! will still be here as always. Interesting that J! is only 1.0 behind WoF. I can't remember a ratings gap that close.

FF will be interesting when Stev e Harvey comes aboard.

Millionaire DEFINITELY should get another sunner run on ABC.

5th Grader continues to hold its own. Wonder what the ratings for DFTL will be like come September?

There hasn't been a $100,000 winner on WoF this season much less a millionaire If there's any bright spot of DonD

I believe the only time I remember the ratings even closer or even beating WoF was when Ken Jennings was making his run and got popular.

Well, Eric, there is a bright spot for DoND, it have better ratings than the last season of The Weakest Link, which, ironically, went out the same way Deal’s going out, on a wimper.

When they got into silly stunts and weird deal offers, that is when it went downhill…..and now, I think it is the contestants that is the problem…..they want more enthusiams or good looks rather than people WHO CAN ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAME CORRECTLY (This can be said too with Price Is Right's problem, but that's another post)……..

You are so right, when DEAL first started, it was good, suspenseful, exciting…….now it is :: YAWN ::

Does this sounded familiar, like Primetime Millionaire………so good riddance Deal.

The ratings are probably low since they are not showing any new syndie eps…they are already showing reruns from this year.

  • Robert says:

I tried out Syndicated Deal or No Deal but now days, I just can't stand it, I said I could never stand it before back in the days of when it was on NBC but with the repeats on GSN, I'm getting use to the show.

Would y'all be suprised if syndicated DOND ended not with a bang but with a whimper like the primetime version did last spring?
