Ratings Report: “Million Dollar Money Drop” Stays Level; “Family Feud” Continues to Impress
We’ve got lots of ratings for broadcast, syndicated, and cable shows, not to mention results of how the black and white shows GSN added for a two week trial period are doing. But first, Million Dollar Money Drop had its first winner last night, giving away $80,000 to a couple. The ratings stayed relatively level due to a weak lead-in. Money Drop day two clocked in at a 3.6/6 rating, up just a little bit. Looks like it has a shot at winning the key demographic also. While that may not seem good, keep in mind that Minute to Win It it touted by the network has a massive phenomenon unlike anything we’ve seen in a long time, and it only got a 4.2/7 (which is its usual level), so given what has to be the cheap budget of Money Drop I have to imagine Fox is OK with how it’s doing. Not thrilled, but OK.
GSN recently added black and white game shows to the overnight 3:00AM hour for a two week period. If classic fans wanted them to stick around then people needed to watch. They’re apparently doing so. On Friday, December 17th, What’s My Line, at 3:00AM ET, had 228,000 viewers and I’ve Got A Secret got 164,000 viewers. I’m not sure if that’s enough to keep them around but they clearly aren’t bombing and there’s clearly an audience that wants to see them.
And in syndication, for the week ending December 12th, Family Feud continues to be in the forefront this season. The show this week stuck to its season high from last week of 1.8. The show’s been having one of the best critical and commercial seasons in a while with Steve Harvey as host, so we’ll see if it keeps up. Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! dipped very slightly to 7.3 and 6.1, respectively. Who Wants to be a Millionaire has remained pretty steady this season, now at a 2.3. Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader finally saw some additional viewers, up to a 1.0. However, Don’t Forget The Lyrics stuck at its 0.9 rating it’s had most season.

To all of the naysayers who thought B&W couldn’t POSSIBLY pull numbers at that hour, those numbers prove that they can, with zero advertising from GSN. It might behoove GSN to consider finally bringing these shows back full-time, because there is an audience. This is really, really good news, Alex, you made my morning. :-)
Good to see B&W has a good audience. Too bad I didn’t have GSN when they aired Cullen TPIR. But I remember they used to have B&W Sunday night when I got the channel in 2001
As for Feud, with all the viral videos of the funny moments so far this season, it’s no surprise. I wasn’t a Steve Harvey fan at first, but he’s growing on me
As for Lyrics, I figure it’s on the way out. Might not even make it to February sweeps at this point
Well, from what I remember, the B&W shows were performing horribly before they were pulled. I think I saw numbers around 85k or so…This is a wonderful turn of events. The B&W shows are a nice change from the rest of the crap the network plays.
I think people realized what they were missing. If they scheduled them well, and promoted them, imagine the ratings they would get!
The full season of Lyrics will probably air, even if the local stations do drop it, remember it’s on VH1. Trivial Pursuit, Temptation(the new $ale of the Century), and Crosswords had ratings like that in the last three years, and they all lasted the full season(and probably had most or all of the episodes taped before the show actually started airing). Cash Cab reruns, which were thought to be debuting this Fall, is in fact bowing in some stations in syndication on January 10th, as per a post on Invision.
i’m honestly not a big fan of the b&w game shows because i never grew up with them, but i am a big fan of password. i’d like to see dawson feud and b&w password back at 3am.
GSN Please, please, please continue “Wayback Playback”. I realized how much I missed WML and IGAS and it puts a smile on my face to see these old shows. You can even show other old shows and mix it around. Just don’t forget us lovers of older shows please!!! Pretty please???
Good news for MDMD. If this keeps up, then Fox will have another hit on its hand. And it’s nice to see 5th Grader improve, a third season could be possible.
Agreed. I was hoping Million Dollar Money Drop would get enough viewers to warrant FOX keeping it around, in comparison to The Rich List, which they cancelled after just 1 episode, and Downfall, which we haven’t heard from ABC about since its 5th episode aired this past August.
Can’t wait to see the 2-Hour Grand Finale of Million Dollar Money Drop’s premiere week tonight. =D
regarding “…so we’ll see if it keeps up.”
It’s only gonna get better!! ;-)
Thanks to everyone making this happen!
