Ratings Report: “Family Feud” Near Doubles Year-to-Date; “You Deserve It” Slides

November sweeps is over.  The period is historically very important for syndicated shows for the ad buying process.  All game shows came out ahead.  Who came out the best, though?  Far and away the biggest winner is Family Feud.  The Steve Harvey hosted show grew an unbelievable 88% year-to-date compared to last November to a current 3.0.  Now granted the ratings system changed this year and includes multiple airings which Feud has many and shows like Wheel of Fortune don’t, but nonetheless the ratings are still up massively compared to a year ago taking that out.  Last result showed it up over 30% in the key demographics and total viewers.  No way to spin that negatively.

The rest of the syndicated shows are having a good year as well.  Wheel of Fortune grew 3% year-to-date to a 7.4 rating.  Jeopardy! saw a 7% increase to 6.2.  Who Wants to be a Millionaire, which just ended its viewer incentive program “Club Millionaire” very abruptly, was up 14% from last November to a 2.5.  Good news for all of them this November, so congratulations to all.

Really the only bad news is for ABC’s You Deserve It, which is just not having a good run.  The show clocked in a fourth place 2.5/4 rating overall and barely fourth place 1.0/2 rating in the 18-49 demographic.  It only beat The CW by two tenths of a point.  Total viewers were 3.56 million.  If you’re in that 3.56 million and enjoy watching the show, I’d be saving all the episodes as you can because it won’t be around much longer.  No show will last like this.  I repeat again: good game wrapped in a bad package.

Guess people prefer substance in their game shows. Congrats to the Feud on the great news though.

  • Saw YDI Sunday afternoon, would THAT explain the bad ratings?????

It’s funny. After the end of the 09-10 season, I was thinking that the syndication market was no longer viable for game shows because they wouldn’t be able to compete with all the new talk shows and Oprah spin-offs and the upcoming stripping of long-running sitcoms like Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother. Thankfully, Family Feud has shown what a little (or a lot) of self-promotion and new media can do. Wheel and J! growing is amazing at this point. Millionaire growing at this point is amazing. But what the people at the Feud have done in such a short time is nothing short of staggering.

I just hope that Millionaire doesn’t start losing its gains after the dismantling of the rewards program. It wasn’t too popular, but it was something that made the show unique.

    Alex,

What were the specific numbers for “Feud”? The percentages are there, but not the specific ratings. If you have them, of course…

You Deserve It needs to be axed. Enough said. There are 3 episodes left in the season, and I will tune in because it’s a new game show, but I will also be playing SimCity 4 at the same time and likely paying more attention to my computer screen than the television.

It has got to be one of the most boring game shows of all time.

ABC made the right decision to air new game shows in November (instead of just in the Winter and Summer months), but they made the wrong choice with the game shows they chose to air. Million Dollar Mind Game should’ve gotten a primetime airing. You Deserve It should never have gotten to air in the first place.

However, knowing how this works, I think that at least one anti-game-show network executive at ABC will use You Deserve It’s poor performance as an excuse to why ABC should not air game shows. Fortunately for us, ABC doesn’t listen to said network executive(s), because otherwise we wouldn’t be getting brand new game shows every Summer on the alphabet network.

Still haven’t watched you deserve it, just got done watching the season premiere of wipeout. And Scott, I thought I was the only one that still plays Simcity 4, guess not.

I’m of the opinion that YDI has an effin’ game, but terrible execution. I’m really of an opinion that it should be a three player main game with the current $100,000 round as the bonus round. The trick would be trying to adapt it to a three person format.
