Ratings Report: “101 Ways” Stays Steady in Week Two

101 Ways to Leave a Game Show had its second episode this past Tuesday.  The second episode is always pretty important.  It’s a good indicator to see if the viewers who were around during week one enjoyed the show enough to come back for more.  If this is any clear indication, the crowd that watched 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show liked what they saw.  This Tuesday’s episode scored 5.3 million viewers and 1.8 rating in the key demographic.  Compared to week one’s 5.5 million viewers, that’s just fine.

Wipeout seems to be losing a little bit of steam, though.  This Tuesday’s episode saw 5.5 million viewers and a 1.8 demographic rating.  The show has been vastly overexposed this year, though hot shows like The Voice and America’s Got Talent are helping.  Wouldn’t hurt to curb back on the year-long run if they want to keep it going for much longer.  Having said that the show is cheap enough, as is 101 Ways, that I have to imagine ABC is overall happy with how things are going.  Like we predicted from the start, the entire audience of Wipeout is coming over to 101 Ways, so we’ll see if the decent news is enough for a renewal.

Syndication ratings are doing their typical summer slums, but Family Feud seems to still be doing well.  Feud, for the week ending June 19th, grew 9% to a 2.5.  It’s firmly in third place in game show rankings, trailing Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! which scored 5.9 and 5.1.  Feud has had one hell of a season.  Can’t wait to see what they can do next season.   Who Wants to be a Millionaire shrank a little to 2.2, and Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? and Don’t Forget The Lyrics! continue their slow ride to the grave with 1.1 and 0.8.

If you care to read GSN’s recent ratings, click here.  I’ve given up trying to interpret them.  One day shows like Lingo bomb miserably, and the next day they do OK.  I don’t get it.  I still think all parties involved and watching were expecting a result better than an average of around 325,000 or so, though, given the high pedigree of Lingo at the network.

I don’t get how Lingo can do so poorly at times, except for the fact I think it should be on at 6:00, or even 6:30. The Newlywed Game does well in that hour so if you move the Newlywed Game to one place in the 6:00 hour, Lingo should go into the other half hour. Shows usually do better earlier on GSN, like when Baggage was on at 6:30. It’s really simple if GSN puts thought into there 5:00-8:00 schedule.

This is just my opinion, but I think Lingo’s popularity has taken a beating, considering the number of times it’s re-run during a single day. That, and the fact that some of the Lingo puzzles are not considered family-friendly.

Wipeout’s ratings are higher on Thursdays, so it looks like shows like The Voice and America’s Got Talent are the reason Wipeout’s ratings are lower on Tuesdays. Also, ABC promotes the Thursday time slot more than they promote the Tuesday time slot. That being said, Wipeout has already been renewed for season 5, so I’m not worried just yet.

  • FS says:

I think Wipeout is fading because they have fallen prey to the network stupidity. They used to be a special summer run. Now there’s winter…spring…summer Wipeout…burnout.

Millionaire never aired more than four times a week on ABC, did it? If you’re talking about GSN, GSN did air MIllionaire seven days a week for quite a few years. Meredith’s show is gone and Regis is down to once a week. Lingo of course does air seven days a week now, and was still airing seven days a week a month ago before the new version began.

Come on. GSN airs Karn’s version of Feud in the afternoons, making it the highest rated program on the network so far, but the new version of Lingo isn’t like the old version, in fact, they should move it to weekends and find classics not around for a while. Why can’t “Dog Eat Dog” air every weekend back then?

I still can’t believe one of the “number” questions on 101 Ways… 69 kids given birth by ONE person….

And NO Fertility drugs! (Happened in the 18th century per the Guinness Book of World Records!)

I think there was a Million Dollar Money Drop-type question snafu on last night’s 101 Ways To Leave A Game Show.

    The question was
According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s 2009 survey, which one of these do Americans spend the most time doing each day?
    a. Housework
    b. Sports & exercise
    c. Caring for children
    d. Personal grooming

The correct answer was given as “Personal Grooming.”

The only problem is — “Personal Grooming” isn’t even listed in the US Dept of Labor’s report. And the actual correct answer wasn’t given to the contestants as a possible answer.

The survey is here — http://www.bls.gov/news.release/archives/atus_06222010.htm — “Personal Grooming” isn’t listed anywhere (do a search for it and you’ll see). The closest thing to that is “Personal Care Activities” but the bulk of that is taken up by its subcategory: Sleeping!

The 2010 survey just came out (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/atus.t01.htm) and shows the same stats — the word “grooming” is not listed in that report anywhere.

So the contestants never had a chance to choose the correct answer because it wasn’t listed.
