“Price is Right” Ups the Ante for April Fools 2010

The Price is Right has been finally embracing holidays.  The one I look forward to more than any for the show is April Fools Day, where they let the show go crazy.  Every year it gets progressively weirder.  The first year wasn’t much because they still had the old people there.  When they were gone, Drew and the crew finally started having some fun in 2009 with set malfunctions, strange prizes, and Drew’s nemesis from his sitcom, Mimi Bobeck (played by Kathy Kinney), as one of the models.  One of the complaints last year was as great as it was to have Mimi back (Drew’s sitcom is one of my favorites), and the crowd apparently loved it, she didn’t really talk or do much of anything.  It’s going to change in 2010.

TVGuide talked about the upcoming April Fools special.  It’s more story driven this year, so this may be interesting and awesome.  Mimi will be taking over as the show’s producer.  One of the first things she does is having announcer Rich Fields replaced by a monkey.  Well, someone in a monkey suit.  The second thing is much funnier.  Mimi will demote all of the models and replace them with guys.  Not male models, either.  The models will be, well, interesting looking, according to emails sent to us.  Given it being Mimi it would have been funny to have them as troll dolls, but I digress in a very nerdy way.  Other things will most likely happen through the episode.

There we go.  I can’t wait to see what you think.  I think I can already plot this out.  We’ll get three or four people (I think I can already name them) saying what a horrible idea it is and why have they done this to their precious show.  But most of the others with a sense of humor and like this sort of thing, like myself, can see that it’s only for one show and it’s a special day for the show which is notorious for going off-the-wall.  Why not have a bit of fun?  I’m really looking forward to this one.  It sounds hysterical.

I was still kind of hoping for a Drew Carey/Wayne Brady switcharound on each of their respctive shows, but since my lifelong love afair with "The Drew Carey Show" trumps my TPIR fanhood, I'm greatly looking forward to this.

I think it'll be fun. I loved "The Drew Carey Show," and I was also a big fan of when GSN (right before it started sucking) took all their hosts and shuffled them around on New Year's Eve (watching Marc Summers try to control "Cram" reminded me a little of "Double Dare"). So screw the purists. It's April Fools' Day. Lighten up!

  • I'm not exactly a purist. I loved last year's April Fools show. But this year's show sounds like it's going a little too far. The fact that it's more story based is likely going to detract us from the gameplay of the show (Jack Wagner fiasco anyone?). Hopefully the show will be a pleasant surprise….but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I've enjoyed their April Fool's shows over the past few years.
But they're really going to have to step up if they ever want to surpass the April Fool's showcase from 1983.

The "old" regime used to do April Fools showcases, so the first 4/1 show was a step up in the spirit of the day, in my opinion.

Loved how they used "Match Game" music last year. How about "Pyramid" music this year? Perhaps use the Winner's Circle countdown for timer games such as Race Game, Bonkers, Switcheroo or Clock Game and the main theme for a Showcase win. Could be a sign of things to come for CBS.

  • I remember one of the first April Fool episodes. The Showcase was filled with nonsense items like a suit-humidifier. They told the contenstant it was a gag, and her actual showcase was…a Cadillac. Then she was told THAT was a gag too, and her showcase was in fact…TWO cadillacs.

I have to agree, this looks like it's moved slightly from the 2009 April Fools show and budged a little bit towards the Jack Wagner. Episodes with a set plotline typically can go one way or the other.

Still, this looks interesting. One thing is for sure, though: last year's April Fools is going to be very hard to top.

If they are going to have guys showing the prizes, they may as well get Rosie O'Donnell to host (not!). If Mimi is producing, perhaps Mr. Wick, Lewis, and Oswald will be involved. I'm sort of just hoping.

Umm…two words…Jack Wagner. I rest my case, Your Honor.

  • @shellygrrl says:

The originals host shuffle was April Fools Day 2003.

Anyhoo, I totally agree. I loved April Fools TPIR last year and have been wondering what they could possibly do to top it this year. Should be interesting!

I agree with Dakota and Juliaz….the last time they tried to do a story show, it was a complete disaster. I loved last year's episode…but a story show? No thanks! It's a game show…not the Drew Carey show. He was criticized for acting too much like his character during the first season. He should remember that from now on. TPIR isn't the Drew Carey show…and it should stay that way.

This is gonna be fun! I loved last year’s April Fool’s show and I’m definitely looking forward to this year’s! RIGHT ON!

    • Craig says:

Yeah, and guys modeling prizes? That's something I haven't seen since a bunch of guys modeling camping equipment as an IUFB once.

As for the April Fool's Showcase of 1983, that was a CLASSIC! I don't think anything will top that.

What year was THIS?! I certainly don't recall hearing about any "Price" 4/1 Showcases like that.

I had a feeling that Mimi was going to be on the show. Because the same day the Drew twitted about the April Fool's show. Craig Fergison twitted a picture of Kathy Kinney in his office. I can't wait… It's going to be a great show!

I was hoping LMAD's Wayne Brady will guest host for Drew on TPIR on April Fool's Day!! Drat!

Does LMAD on CBS plan any April Foolishness on April Fool's Day as well? Like maybe Johnathan Magnum and Wayne Brady trade places?
