Get set to blog away...he's got the gig officially, according to him...

FROM MONDAY'S VARIETY:

Drew Carey to host 'Price is Right'
Comic will take over for retired Bob Barker
By MICHAEL LEARMONTH
Carey

CBS is set to announce Drew Carey as the new host of "The Price is Right," ending a long search for a successor to Bob Barker.
Comic leaked the news during a taping of Monday's edition of "Late Show with David Letterman." Announcement confirmed weeks of speculation that Carey had emerged as the finalist for the gig (Daily Variety, June 21).

Carey got noticed by CBS execs during the taping of a pilot for the new gameshow "Power of 10." Last week Carey told reporters at the Television Critics Assn. press tour that final details on a deal were being hammered out.

"They approached me right after the pilot for 'Power of 10,' and they called me, I said, 'No.' Then they called me a month later ...so I met with them and stuff and we've been negotiating ever since. ... It's a done deal. I'm the new host of 'The Price Is Right.'"

New episodes will begin taping in August.

OK...Anyone here ever notice that when Carey was on WLiiA that he had absolutely no idea how to interact with the contestants? For G-d's sake...He didn't even know how to use a microphone. While he always had the clip-on mic, he went into the audience to find people while using the hand-held microphone. While that in itself is not a bad thing, he always forgot to actually use it with the audience member, meaning that we never heard what the regular audience member said, but we bheard Drew out of TWO microphones. WTF? This is our host of TPiR? He might be a nice person, and an OK improve artist, but do we really want that or do we want someone who's a student of the genre, has hosted a few games, and has a big knowledge of all the games on the show? Todd is one of the best game show hosts to come up in a long while. I don't know why he hasn't been given the job already. He would be perfect.

Access Hollywood just reported that Drew Carey is Now in the "Final Negotiations" Phase to take the "Price" gig. Though they still say that he'll do it "...If The Price Is Right", "Daily Variety" Co-Confirms it along with Access. Here's hoping Drew knows his way around the games.

Here is the issue though... do we see TPIR lasting a good long time now with its new host, or with multiple hosts, etc.

Obviously, Bob Barker's run was out of the ordinary for TV hosting, but, Sajak and Trebek have "been" their shows as well for 20+ years as well. My point being, I don't see Drew Carey being, from a popularity standpoint or his own personal career goals standpoint, someone who would be the host of TPIR for 20, 15, or even really the next 10 years. He might be a high profile "bridge" to another "relative" unknown that could take the game under their wing as their own, like a Todd Newton. I mean, Bob Barker was "known" when he started hosting TPIR, but, he wasn't really the celebrity that be became by the 80s and 90s from hosting the show. Someone like Todd or another person who has hosted some less high profile game shows should be the next choice if they make a "big splash" play with Carey (or someone similar) and they burn out after 3-5 years.

Walberg, IMHO, was a GREAT fit for Russian Roulette. I don't think he'll have a problem establishing a rapport with the contestants, but since it's TPIR we're talking about, I'm not sure how he'd be able to learn 70-odd games well enough to know them all like the back of his hand.

Carey, on the other hand, could work with the show. At times, TPIR could be like an improv show, and that's exactly what Whose Line? was. Carey really could work provided he doesn't screw up Power of 10.

Drew Carey would be ok for me I guess. Even though he did great hosting "Whose Line?", I'm not sure how he would do for an actual game show, not just one where fake points are given out. Once I see a couple of episodes of "The Power of 10", I'll have made up my mind on whether he would be good for daytime television.

I wouldnt have a problem with Drew Carey hosting TPIR but i think that Todd Newton is the right choice because of the fact that he would be the most comfortable with the pricing games. I don't really understand why people don't like Todd Newton hosting style. I will granted it that it that he wasn't as good at Whammy/ The All New Press Your Luck as peter tomarken but the host that comes in and host TPIR will probably not be as great as Bob Barker. I think Mark L. Walberg is a great game show host but i'm not sure i could see him hosting the price is right. I am more for John O Hurley or Todd Newton but Drew Carey would be another choice for me.

I'm not impressed by carey as a host...he always seems to reach for jokes and be dry when a joke comes to him...also those who think TPIR is the place to create jokes should watch an ep of the most recent UK TPIR...which is AWFUL and what I think Carey's hosting would create.

Follow the words of Bob Barker people...get the man most comfortable with the pricing games...which would be todd newton.

Well, if the most important thing to CBS is getting a "name" to host, then Drew's as good as any...better than most we've heard thrown out there. And I'm sure he'd do a good job. But what does Todd Newton have to do to get this gig?! I hear he rocks the TPIR Live show. He's actually spent years training for this job! He knows all of the games by heart. He's on the DVD game, for chrissakes! But I get the feeling he's viewed by CBS as "that cable guy." That's a shame.
Barker wasn't a "name" when he got Truth Or Consequences. Todd has more game shows under his belt than Barker did when he got the TPIR job.
I still say, put the auditions on CBS.com and let us have a voice.

I really think CBS should shell out the bucks to get Drew Carey to host. He's a funny, likable, charming guy, he has a following, and he's proven to be a capable host. Out of all of the names that have been tossed around, Drew is the first one to really jump out at me as someone that is likely to keep the show going strong.

A lot of people I know don't like him, but if it can't be Todd, I think Drew is an excellent choice. I'd prefer him greatly to John O'Hurley.

Mark Walberg's in the running? That's a surprise. He's a good host, but I don't think Price is his show.
