“Price is Right” Gets New Pricing Game: Rat Race

The Price is Right is adding yet another pricing game to its large library of them.  This one’s interesting because it not only is the first game in a long time but it’s the first game apparently made in some part by host Drew Carey.  The new game is called Rat Race, and it looks to be incredibly entertaining.  It’s also for a car, along with two other prizes.  A post from The Price is Right‘s official page lays out all the rules and details.  No exact word on when it comes out yet.  If I’m missing it let me know or if one of our Price lurkers can email it to me or comment in some secretive way, if they choose, I’d really appreciate it.

The game is apparently set up a bit like, what the title suggests, a race between five rats.  It’ll be fake, don’t worry.  You can “win” up to three of the rats in the race by correctly pricing three different items.  Items range in value, and the range you have to guess them in changes also so you’re not screwed if it’s a tough one.  Each correctly priced item gets you one rat.  After you’re done pricing items the race begins.  If one of the rats you chose comes in third, you get the smallest prize.  If one of the rats you chose comes in second, you get the medium prize.  If one of the rats you chose comes in first, you win the car.  You can win one, two, or all three of the prizes.

Sounds really entertaining and fun, doesn’t it?  Sounds like one of the best games in a while.  The last game was Gas Money, and to be honest it isn’t that good.  It started out complicated and was basically a direct clone of Deal or No Deal, but thankfully they simplified recently.  This game takes some ideas from a bunch of games and comes up with something with an incredibly unique presentation and a great game as well.

It sounds … just like Master Key.

    With a different front game.

And a better chance of winning.

  • Andrew L. Budny says:

This looks like an interesting game, reminds me of Hurdles as a matter of fact!!!!! Take a look.

Got to see Price for the first time in so long Monday (holiday off), and noticed the change to Any Number:
They now give the line of numbers 0-9 above the prices, and as each is picked, a red slash covers it, giving the player something to see instead of relying on their own memory…

  • MrQuiz says:

Despite this, TPIR has still "jumped the shark." It did so while Barker was still at the helm…

  • It has NOTHING to do with Hurdles. Sheesh.

  • Jared Oswald says:

So it's like Master Key and Hurdles.

  • Heather says:

Gas Money sucks! And nobody ever wins That's Too Much. I look forward to seeing a new game, especially if Drew's creativity was involved. :)

  • Craig says:

This sounds like a neat game. The first part has a Walk of Fame feel to it. The second part is kinda like a horse race only they're rats. So, if you pick the 3 rats that finish in the Top 3, that's a TRIFECTA! Can't wait to see this in a couple weeks.

This sounds…lame. I'm sorry, but it just does. It's basically master key with one more choice. Whoopie do.

  • Jay says:

    I agree with you, juliaz12345.

  • Zach says:

Isn't Shell Game just a re-doing of Bonus Game, and wasn't Joker just a rip-off of Shell Game? Several games have been rip-offed one another, and besides, the pricing portion of this game resembles the long retired game Walk of Fame so this new game is not all a rip-off of Master Key.

  • Jordan says:

I believe if I've read the posts right, June 16th is when it debuts.

  • Doug Morris says:

For a minute there, I thought the contestant was going to run an mini obstacle course. If you remember Phil Collins' guest-starring role on "Miami Vice", you know what I'm talking about. Phil played the part of the host of a game show titled — "Rat Race".

  • Jordan says:

I know this isn't exactly relevant, but it's Price is Right related, so here we go.

There is a rumor going around that Rich Fields has been let go as the announcer. Nothing is confirmed or denied, but it's being discussed.

  • Lirodon says:

Yeah, Shell Game is a remake of Bonus Game, and it was originally intended as its direct replacement, but then suddenly Bonus Game came crawling back for no reason.

  • Ernie G. says:

Except for that both involving racing, which I think his point was…

  • Kevin $ says:

The coolest thing about this game…if I understand it correctly (correct me if I'm wrong)…if you get the three price things right, you're guaranteed to win SOMETHING, which is always cool. In that sense, it's almost like Pass the Buck too…

It sounds at least kinda exciting and it's new. So LET'S WATCH! :D

  • Nails says:

Despite all this, you're still a moron.

  • That's why I slammed it.

  • MikeSant318 says:

OK, curious: how is the race supposed to be run? Drawing numbers out of a bowl (too lengthy, maybe), or will the rats run on something like the old electric football games from the olden days?

  • mrbrown2195 says:

By all accounts, they're your standard toy wind up rats… nothing special.

  • mrbrown2195 says:

Not really. According to the big John over at Golden Road, the rats may not even finish the race. You're guaranteed to win nothing.

Winning nothing is not a problem for me. In life, sometimes you just lose.

  • alex_8899 says:

    Nice. A new pricing game!

Meanwhile, where are Barker's Bargain Bar, Credit Card, and Check Game?

  • Veradrist says:

    Ideally, all permenently retired.

  • Elaine Whaley says:

I loved the new game. we were also told us we could look up the new Rat Race Game and see how it was made. I wanted my husband to see it too but I did not record the show today as I was home and he missed it but I can not bring it up.
Thanks for the new game it is exciting.
