I joke around with our recurring popular segment “The British are Better Than Us.”  I think we’ve got one on them.  I had a love/hate relationship with the the original BBC version of ABC’s upcoming 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show.  I hated it because it was probably the slowest thing I’ve ever seen (up until that point; nothing is slower than Million Dollar Money Drop).  The game wasn’t all that interesting also.  The only thing I really enjoyed was the title: the various ways to leave a game show.  However, they all basically boiled down to, “We’ll throw you in a pool.”  ABC’s upcoming version, debuting June 21st at 9:00PM ET, has released some pictures and videos and I have to be honest: I’m back in.  I’m really looking forward to it.

The game is basically the same if not a bit simplified.  Just choose right answers and avoid the wrong ones.  Wrong answers eject you from the game in big ways.  ABC has severely upped the ante, and I love it.  You’ll be flown out on the wings of a bi-plane, shot up in the air by “dynamite”, flipped over in an exploding car, dropped off a speeding 18 wheel truck, and more.  Even the end game, which in the British version ended in a short drop into a pool, has been upped to a ten story drop.   You may as well go all out, and ABC has.  I think they’ve fixed a few fundamental problems with the original.  The exits are entertaining, incredibly different, and terrifying.  But most of all they’re funny.

Here’s a look at one of them.  This is the Reverse Bungee.  You sit on chairs with “dynamite” at the bottom.  If you miss your chair goes flying in the air incredibly fast.  It’s as scary and funny as you can imagine.  Take a look below.

Looking at this, the pictures, and knowing who is working on it, I’ve got a feeling this could be a lot of fun.  A lot of people working on this are truly big fans of the genre so I trust them.  Be sure to check out 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show starting Tuesday, June 21st, at 9:00PM ET on ABC.   A gallery of photos are below.  Pictures and video courtesy ABC.

What? No “The wrong answer will be revealed in 5… (pause) 4… (pause) 3… (pause) 2… (pause) (pause) 1… (pause) (pause) (more pause) (change channel)”?

    This version is better.

Oddly enough, having to put in commercial breaks will be the best thing that ever happened to this show. I’m assuming the clip has been heavily edited to give us the sense of a round, but even so, that looks much breezier than the British version. Then again, a three-toed sloth looked breezier.

On the other hand, I still see the Emergency Exit merry-go-round in one of the stills. I had hoped they had done away with that as well.

I’m not 100% sure but I think that may a picture from the pilot taped in whatever country that was. It was where the British one does. The country escapes my memory.

Going over the press release it says that the final round now has 4 people and the game starts with 8 so it may be gone. The 4 final people play the final round for $50,000 which involves a 10 story drop from the tower. Our version was shot in America, unlike other versions which shot on the foreign set.

I’m not a fan of the simplified game. Surely there must be more than that to it. It hardly seems fair to stick one person with an answer just for going last. That, and I don’t like them seemingly not having a nice set.

This does look fun to watch compared to the British one. I will definitely give it a shot.

ABC might have done it right–if the clip included here is an example. It doesn’t look as dragged out as the BBC version, and use of Steam’s biggest hit is, while obvious, welcome. Contestants look like the usual lot from Central Casting, and one wonders if squealing is part of the test for potential contestants.

I’ll be watching–at lest the premiere episode.

I sincerely hope that 101 ways to leave a gameshow don’t have a scandal like Dog Eat Dog did with one contestant having severe memory problems from a bungee event. Otherwise, It looks like a good show, and from seeing the British version…it seems like they may have to find 101 more crazy ways to leave a game show.

Part of me really wants to try that reverse bungee just for fun. Isn’t that the guy from BrainSurge hosting?

  • Peter says:

Why don’t they just SHOOT the losers with a shotgun?? That’ll bring in ratings!!

Sorry, but when I watch a game show, I’m more interested in how the winners will be “rewarded” than how the losers will be “punished”!!

The video isn’t working for me; it just says “Embedding this video is disabled by its owner”!

  • Bob says:

Will there be any going down braindrains on this show?
