Nickelodeon Games and Sports (Nick GAS), a once popular kids channel to see the many game shows Nickelodeon produced in the 90s, has announced that they will be going Broadband-Only. The reason for the replacement is The N
Noggin, two seperate channels that shared one, are going to be spliting up into their own channels, and Nick GAS ’s slot gets one of them. The channel used to have such a variety of shows, blocks, and segments with hosts such as Dave Aizer, Vivianne Collins and Mati Moralejo. A network that used to show 20-25 shows a week, now only shows 6 shows a day with each host being dropped from the network, with it being a sign that Nickelodeon just doesn’t care anymore for this channel. They have not announced when this will be happening although I expect it to happen within the next year. It had a great run, but I think laying it to rest is for the better now.

It was fun while it lasted. I sensed Nick GAS ran out of ‘it’ when they removed Finders Keepers (my all-time favorite Nick game show) from the 2am and 5am slots. Ironically, Time Warner cable still has the show programmed in the on-screen menus. Weird.
I use to watch Finders Keepers and Double Dare allot, but when they disappeared I stopped watching too.
Will it be possible that GSN will pick up the shows I ask? The answer will be 99.9% No.
With the main Nickelodeon channel not producing more games/sports programs, this was simply inevitable.
Actually I could see GSN picking it up perhaps as a Saturday morning block or something, as that has been DEAD land for GSN for the longest time now. And with Nick going the way it is and not giving a rats bleep about that kind of programming anymore, I could see then saying, yah lets get a few last dollars for this stuff and unload it to GSN.
Good riddance. I won’t miss Nick Gas too much, as I know Viacom’s tendency to run all of its shows into the grounds. There haven’t really been enough kids’ game shows these days, except for “reality” shows like Fetch with Ruff Ruffman and Endurance. All we’ve had recently is Go For It TV, which was too full of pointless pop numbers (what was the educational content in that?) and Double Dare 2000, which was so elaborate that far more time was spent explaining the stunts than playing them. If they still aired the original shows I might be more concerned, but I’m just not.
“Oops! The Games and Sports site is currently under construction! Check back soon for all things sports on nick.com!”
it maybe coming sooner then we think, considering the site is down
Doesn’t surprise me this much. They’ve been using the same old schedule for like 2 years.
not shocked…when they pulled the 80s shows and classic DD for the same crap I knew It’d be a matter of time (BTW the lame ducking started almost the moment the N went commercial) the N is probs going to go basic cable sooner than later as Disney is kicking Nick’s ASS in the 12-18 bracket which is the more desirable bracket (as they actually spend money). I’m actually suprised this didnt happen sooner perhaps since CTW/PBS still had a stake in the Noggin/N project (and more importantly the rights to the DeGrassi franchise).
I remember when they had the Double Dare Double Play and even paid for the Syndie SSDD and the FOX Finders Keepers…not to mention the commercial free Pumping gas block.
Ahhh fond memories. I believe Darby had the rights to most of the 80s shows so I wouldnt be shocked if they creep onto GSN.
As for the split and crossover, I believe september with some of the SNICK/T-Nick origninals going to the N full time taking the lead.
Bottom line is The N is going to war with disney by offering darker teen fare than Disney to get another segement of the same demographic and most media buyers were waiting with baited breath for the N to split from Noggin and go 24 hours with more originals.
The problem, Nick can care less since closing nick studios about live action originals…so this should be interesting how they fight the mouse there since Nick became more and more like Cartoon network
Strange Days indeed.
They had it comming, I’m surprised the channel is not going off the air entirely. Networks like these have so much potential, but these days(especially in Viacoms days) they no longer take the time to expand their channels. Nick Gas, another channel to add to my list of ruined channels.

MTV NICK GAS
the list goes on…
To tyrone:
Nick Gas’s website has said that exact same thing for years. Nickelodeon doesn’t give a rat a– about it.
Keith, you forgot to add GSN! As for GAS,I’m surprised it took Nick this long to do this.Classic DD was the only reason I got the channel in ‘03.Glad I recorded those shows!
Instead of making Nick GAS an online only channel, it’d be great if they could make it into a classic Nick channel. Bring back shows like Clarissa Explains It All, Pete and Pete, Salute Your Shorts, Wild n Crazy Kidz, and even kids shows like Eureka’s Castle, The Elephant Show, Maya the Bee, David the Gnome, etc.
Funny you should mention that because back in 03 (aside from degrassi which was the last bastion of Noggin/N’s partnership with CTW and PBS) the old nick originals made up Ns programming (Especally Pete and Pete) before the N decided to go full force against Disney and GAS was left to rot. Noggin while being predominantly CTW shows back in 03 DID have alot of the old Nick JR shows albeit the late 90s incarnation and not the much fabled late 80s early 90s version.
The problem with having a classic Nick Channel is that MOST of their 80s shows were either CTV shows or even Thames shows from england and therefore they do not own these shows and that was the reason Nick started to build and run their own studios…now almost all programming is original.
What I WOULD suggest is a classic nick VOD service…there is enough Nick Nostalgia out there for these shows that I think It could work.
And if classic DD (which I believe hasn’t aired in 2-3 years) were available (Im sure darby has most of the rights and that’s why It wasnt shown on the repeat loop that GAS became at the end of it’s run) GSN should pick it up for sat mornings toots sweet Especially the first 2 seasons which GAS Rarely ran even when it was doing the DDDPs (and I believe never ran syndie DD which would be gold for so many 25-30 yos who want to remember themselves as kids)
Sorry guys, could someone clarify “broadband only TV” for me? Is it a “live” streamed video over the internet with commercials, or is it more like YouTube? Either way, I think there could be a strong following on college campuses, where kids don’t always have TVs, but usually have high speed Internet. Just a thought.
i agree broadband VOD (youtube) would be awesome…but well…only if they bring back the classic DDs
Nick and Viacom have gone to hell. They don’t care anymore about their shows. I can’t wait till the day Viacom goes bankrupted and Nick gets canceled. They don’t care about what they have, so no one will care when they’re both gone. Oh, and I have found a link to the GaS site. Look up an old Nick game show in Wikipedia and look in the links at the bottom.
It’s about time… the network was great a few years ago… but is way past “put up or shut up” time.
What boggles my mind is the fact that Nick/Viacom clearly didn’t give a rat’s ass about the network when they stopped making content for it and stopped programming it (hell, they run MULTIPLE episodes of DD2k a day — a show that only ran for a season)… yet is still on the air, ad free.
I’m not suggesting that going to ads would have saved the network… but even if it’s a minimal cost to operate it these days, it’s still not earning them any cash… and you can only watch the same episode of Legends 15 times before you flip the channel.
I don’t know exactly what “broadband only” means but I have been killing to have this channel for a long time so now that it will be online I will get to have it. Legends of The Hidden Temple is still my fav. show. So good to hear it will still be around in some form.
The network “jump-the-shark” in 2004 after getting rid of Make The Grade, Think Fast and Finders Keepers. If I see one more episode of Get The Picture, I will scream! I will miss the classic Nick Gas with all the many cool versions of Double Dare, especially the WHYY days. Oh well, maybe we will see them back on GSN.
Am I the only one who sees what’s going to happen they are going to turn The-N into it’s own channel so no it won’t mean Classic Nick shows or syndicated shows in general no this means…Hold your excitement *Sarcasm* It means we get DEGRASSI FOR A WHOLE DAY YAY *Sarcasm* i’m sry i love the show but it gets old when they could indeed bring back other shows.
I agree with the person above whom said, nick needs to creat a “classic nick channel” that airs only classic nick shows like double dare original, ssdd, fdd “fox and nick versions” think fast “the skip lackey version” finders keepers, what would you do, wild and crazy kids “the 1st and 2nd version” legends of the hidden temple, guts, figure it out, make the grade, get the picture and nick arcade. All these shows should be aired on the network as a Classic nick game show block in the morning. In the afternoon they should air: all that, clarissa explains it all, round house, you cant do that on tv, dont just sit there, weinerville, pete and pete, alex mack, 100 deeds for eddie mc dowd, the amanda show, sk8tv, kids court, ren and stimpy, doug and rocko!!!! since nick toons doesnt air them anymore.
It happened! If you go to the “Buzz” channel Nick GaS is in there!
the 24/7 lineup used to be cool when they have when they have more shows on the channel. but since late 2004, it look like its cursed because get the picture still playing at same old 1pm et slot everyday while nick arcade playing in late night only.
