Nick at Nite Revives “Guts” For Families

I’m telling you, we can’t seem to get any new ideas out there that connect with people anymore.  But this revival definitely has the potential to be awesome.  According to Cynopsis, where we seem to get just about everything, Nick at Nite is bringing back the popular sports competition show GUTS for families under the title My Family’s Got GUTS.  No word yet on when this primetime original will see the light of day.

The original ran from 1992 to 1995 on Nickelodeon and was hosted by sitcom actor Mike O’Malley and refereed by Moira Quirk.  If you haven’t seen it, the show can basically be described as a kids version of American Gladiators of sorts.  Three kids went against each other in physical games to see which one would have the most points and win for the day.  It was a pretty cool show for its time and really still held up very nicely in reruns ten years later.  Let’s see how Nick at Night revives this one.

I’m wondering if this is just an attempt to repackage “My Dad is better than your dad”

This was one of my favorite shows growing up (other than Nick Arcade, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Double Dare, Gladiators, and The Price is Right). When this gets revived for families, its gonna look like Guts, Gladiators, and Double Dare rolled into one. I wonder if they’ll have the AgroCrag and if it will be like a team race up it. Like one person starts up and after a certain amount of actuators then tag their teammate to continue a different part (like a rock wall or rope ladder to hit more actuators and so on and so forth.)

GUTS was called American Gladiators for Kids. I think it lived up to the title. If the show is anything like the original, “My Family’s Got Guts” should have legs with those whom Nick at Nite now serves…the former Nickelodeon generation.

    WHAT!?

MEGA-COOL! It shouldn’t be surprising, with AG becoming a hit this season, it’s appropriate shows in the same general realm would start popping up again. GUTS was one of the best of Nick’s game shows, IMHO, number 2 only behind Double Dare.

This is great news. I’d hope Mike O’Malley would come back to host, he had the perfect energy and charisma to host the show, and I know he hasn’t totally left the Hollywood eye after GUTS ended. He’d be the perfect fit.

Now I wonder if Nick would consider pairing up a family version of GUTS with a new revival of Family Double Dare………………………………

  • Adam says:

YES! I never thought I’d see the day where GUTS would be revived. I also believe that Mike O’Malley would be awesome to have as host again. Now if only we could get Double Dare back on the air

  • Devon says:

Since it’s been 12.5 years since the original run ended, I’m really excited to know what the arena would look like. I probably wouldn’t even recognize it.

  • Adam says:

And they had to close Nickelodeon Studios. This would have been perfect if they kept the studios open.

Well they are taping it at Universal Studios in Orlando….and this is a serious commitment too- 22 episodes (20 half-hour and 2 hour-long)…..this could actually be really good if done right…(Pat- the press release says that two of the four players on a team will do the Crag climb, so it probably is some sort of relay)…

    here’s the press release…

(the tapings are in August, so it’s probably going to be a September/October airdate…)

This sounds like what MDBTYD was trying to be. GUTS was a favorite of mine, TTTT, and this family version has surface potential…

DO DO DO – DO YOU HAVE IT? (GUTS!)

This is pretty cool. I hope they bring back the team of Mike o’malley and Moira Quirke. And keeping the original theme music would be cool too.

  • Trent says:

I just shurg at how Viacom will screw this up just like they have DD2000

  • keith says:

I’m a little curious why its on Nick at Nite.

  • Channel Surfer says:

Please email Worldwide Biggies, who will be producing and tell them you want Mike O’malley back as host. I can’t imagine anybody else hosting GUTS, his hosting style was Perfect for the show. Also, Tell them to bring Moira Quirke back.

    Heres the address.

The fact that this is on Nick AT NITE is actually a plus to me. Why…well look at the original Guts downfall (aside from inane bungee sports like zero g) and that was political correctness and a desire to “teach something” rather than entertain.

I remember the format and it was always at least one boy and one girl, needless to say the girl got her butt whipped OR they would put 2 girls against a boy at least 2 years younger so the girl can win instead of having seperate boys and girls divisions. It killed the show especially in the last season where they rattled off these lectures on fitness and self esteem rather than the games themselves, Global Guts helped relieve this with an olympic spirit but the 3 players mixed gender flaw remained and it was too late ratings wise.

Nick at nite will relieve the political correctness e/i problem. Unless they tie it in to one of viacom’s “iniatives” which well are mostly DEATH.

The family format…ehhhhhhhhhh dunno…It can work or it can bomb, the problem is that I don’t know many families where EVERYONE is fit enough. I mean yeah you have exceptions like the Bulgers, Molinas and Boones but those are at a high level…at even a moderate level to do things safely, I dont know many families that are athletic enough ACROSS THE BOARD. It’s an issue, especally with the parents who would be in their 40s.

Also as observed with many shows (College Mad house, the original Shop till you drop, even FDD) what looks cool with kids doing it looks retarded with adults doing it…hopefully that can be addressed. It’s a novel Idea BUT I need to see it before I’m sold.

I wonder if N@N will revive “Think Fast” as well.
