NBC Schedules “Amne$ia” and Increases “Deal or No Deal”

I’m often amazed at how Deal or No Deal, through NBC’s extreme over exposure, can remain extremely strong and popular.  However, do you think it’ll keep it up for a two hour weekly episode?  This is part of NBC’s midseason of midseason shake-up.  First off, once 1 VS 100’s season finale is over on Friday, February 22nd, NBC’s new game show, Amne$ia, sees its debut at 9:00PM ET.  If you note, the show has seven letters, with the “e” in the middle.  There’s place to zoom through the “e” in the logo, so I think we’re safe.  You can calm down, everyone.

Amne$ia can basically be described as a light-hearted Moment of Truth with a worse host, Dennis Miller.  I like him, but he just doesn’t hold a candle to Mark L. Walberg of FOX’s lie detector show.  Amne$ia just sees contestants recalling past events from their life for money.  This is going to probably make me sound like a horrible person, but I can’t see this working especially since FOX’s version is on the air and really popular so far.  It might just seem too tame and boring now, especially with the novelty off the lie detector already somewhere.  I can just see something like The Chair/The Chamber fight occurring, though with The Moment of Truth lasting a while because of the post-American Idol slot.

A little 1 VS 100 note: for some reason only seven of the eight episodes are going to air.  They are skipping the fourth taped episode and going straight to 205.  Might have had an issue with it, or might have had the stereotypical Endemol “Your game sucked so we aren’t going to air it but pay you off.” situation.  There will be a pop culture episode the week before the season finale.  Also with interesting scheduling moves, Deal or No Deal will be staying on Mondays, but moving to 9:00PM ET on March 31st to make room for what will surely be a “fun(?)” “show(?)” (My Dad is Better Than Your Dad) at 8:00PM ET.  Deal will have two hour episodes every Wednesday at 8:00PM ET starting on March 26th.

I am mystified as to how DonD is still strong despite the fact I gave up on that. Deal used to be calm and simple, but now it so clogged with gimmicks, it’s a waste of time watching it. I’ll be stunned it that can survive the 2hr episode. As for Amne$ia, I don’t think it has the staying power. It’ll likely get clobbered in the ratings.

This writer’s strike is turning NBC, especially, into an all reality network. What would NBC do without DoND? Is every idea for a game show making it to the air these days? Shows that would barely have made it on Discovery health or TLC are showing up on NBC primetime. That new show about teen couples trying to raise someone else’s baby woul;d barely have made it on cable a year ago, but now is on network TV. This is sad.

Ahem, did I just read that NBC isn’t airing a taped episode of 1v100 because of something that is totally absurd? First they refuse to air a DoND episode just because a lady knocked out both million dollar cases in the first round, and now this. I want the FCC to investigate whatever the baloney NBC is doing.

…And we know how great Dennis Miller was on “Grand Slam” with his extremely funny puns.
(please do not think I am serious… I think Miller is boring.)

Deal Or No Deal going two hours on Wednesday nights? What is sad is that it will probably still be just one person playing for the entire time and just take twice as many commericals to slow down the gameplay even more than it already is. Thank goodness DVR lets me skip the whole “Let’s get to know the player” and watch Deal in about 20 minutes.

And I still want to know what happened to the insect chamber…

If you must become the Game Show Network at this time, NBC, at least do it with original ideas.

I think overexposure of DoND was a given as soon as the WGA even talked about a strike.

And to not air an episode of 1 vs 100 is absolutely shocking.

2 hours of DOND? NBC what the hell are you thinking? I’m amaze that the viewers aren’t sick of DOND by now. The show is a mess now. I also want the FCC to get on NBC’s ass. Who can watch a 2 hour long game show?

Honestly I can’t wait for Amnesia. I’ve been desperately trying to find something to watch at 9 p.m. on Fridays which is pretty hard to do. I can thank NBC for filling that gap for me.

I disagree with you Alex, I think The Maury show game show (a.k.a. the moment of truth) only did well it’s first show because of the curiosity factor, many people I asked about it thought it was a stupid show and it wasn’t worth any amount of money to reveal some of the things these guys revealed. But I do agree that american idol might help keep it around for a while.

Amnesia will do okay but it’s not going to last, I gonna predict the same thing that happened with Identity, strong start but lackluster finish.

it seems to me that NBC has virtually gven up on 1 vs. 100 and trying to milk the dond cash cow until it’s dry. I’m thinking as soon as the $1M is won it will slowing start to crash and burn. I must confess I haven’t watched 1 vs. 100 in a long time becuase Friday is my poker night and I keep forgetting to set the DVR.

and finally if skipping a 1 vs. 100 was endemol’s decision that surprises me, production costs MUST be huge for that show and if it doesn’t air that’s wasted money and lost revenue it’s a double whammy.

    Adam,

What’s with the witch hunt against Deal or No Deal? You’ve said you want the FCC to investigate Deal or No Deal TWICE in the last 15 hours. Just because you don’t like a 2-hour game show is not a reason to make a federal case. If you don’t like it, turn the channel.

I only watched TMOF to see Mark L. Wahlberg host again–and I knew I wouldnt like the premise of the show. Now NBC is doing a couple of things I HATE:
copying a what seems to be a successful show
    and

HOST: DENNIS MILLER? I thought he was the ONLY thing bad about Grand Slam–and a host to me is very important! Just for that I definitely wont be watching it.

  11. 11 Martin Jan 26th, 2008 at 10:34 pm

OMG Dennis Miller as host of Amnesia. That sounds horrifying. I can’t understand why producers insist on putting him as host of anything. (e.g. Monday Night Football) He is not funny and he isn’t even remotely entertaining. I don’t even think his stand-up is that great. Terrible choice. And the fact that NBC is even considering doing this show is shame. Doesn’t this sound Who Wants to be a Millionaire? - Greedesc?

Speaking of Millionaire….I think one reason why the show didn’t do well after a while in primetime (in addition to all the celebrities) was the fact it played too often. 4 times a week was horrifying. I feel the same way about DorND. 2 hours! I wouldn’t dare watch the show for two hours. Two hours of watch Howie drag out the entire episode with probably two contestants! No thanks! NBC is going to ruin a good thing. I can see it happening.

If 1 vs 100 is showing 7 epidodes what will air on Friday Feb. 22

  13. 13 wheelloon Jan 27th, 2008 at 12:42 am

    *Sigh*

If NBC is trying to fill slots with a post WGA strike, then what logic is there TO NOT SHOW A FRIGGIN TAPED NON-SCRIPTED SOLIDLY SUCCESSFUL SHOW LIKE THE 1vs100! That’s 1 hour more of time they can fill, and 1 hour closer to making it to the end of the strike. Unbelievable. The same applies for any unaired DoND’s, even if overexposure has gotten the best of it. Don’t throw away work you’ve already done when it can be put to use, it doesn’t take an Astrophysicist to figure that out, I assure you…

On this note, though I know the complications, if I was ABC, there would be nothing, absolutely zippo, from me getting Super Millionaire back on the schedule. We have: established name, established host, established format, solid primetime potential, and we haven’t heard one word? Genius, got some genius minds there…

There are many opportunities for original, unique, non-copied shows out there that can be used at a time like this. Why aren’t they being jumped on? I don’t wanna watch a ripoff of another show, where I can watch something similar later in the week, when a completely original format is on the air one channel up, and I can assure you I’m not alone in that sentiment.

    Use your brains people.

As for Dennis Miller, I saw potential for him as a host when watching Grand Slam, but he definitely was lacking then. I can compare it much to how I viewed Greenberg on Duel: Solid credentials with potential later on, but currently needing work and needing it now, not later.

I like DOND but I agree they drag it out way too long. I think in a two hour episode there ought to be at least 3 to 4 contestants playing. One contestant per hour to me is insane. I like when there is at least one contestant and at least half way or better through the second contestant. I can see a pace of a gameshow starting slow when it first starts out to get people into it and to understand the rules more but we are in season 3 of Deal. I think deal needs to pick up the pace and I would be all for getting rid of the supporters and maybe i sound cocky here but i feel I could make my own decision if i was a contestant on Deal. I am a huge deal fan love the game the models and think Howie does a great job of hosting but to me the two hour epsiodes all the time will kill it. I could see a two hour episode for say a winner takes all edition again maybe but not every week. I hope NBC reads this if you start doing the two hours episodes of Deal have 3 to 4 contestants in the two hours. As for Amensia I am not sure what i will think of this although I am somewhat of a sucker for lightheart moments on gameshows. I don’t personally care to watch a bunch of teenagers thinking they can be good parents i could care less about that. I like the gameshows Deal, 1 VS 100 which I think hasn’t been exposed enough and am not sure about Dennis Miller gameshow hosting because I didn’t see Grandslam so i can’t really judge his hosting. I think that a gameshow though on friday night at 9/8 central would be great. I personally would like to see instead of a two hour episode of Deal here is what I’m thinking Deal on Mondays at 9/8 central, Wed at 8/7 central and then have 1 VS 100 on Tuesday at 9/8 central and Friday at 8/7 central ( why 1 VS 100 is a fun trivia show that deserves better ratings and is a fun show I didn’t think i would like the every ten but for some reason i actually do enjoy it also I think that if Deal can be on twice or three times a week although at least it’s not on 4 times a week like WWTBAM was then 1 vs 100 should be on twice a week at least til the writer’s strike is over. Last schedule idea Amne$ia on fridays at 9/8 central. speaking of gameshows making it to the air then some of mine that i’ve came up with but haven’t gotten to pitch yet should be on the air then.

There is only one problem with your argument, wheelloon–I don’t think CBS would be too happy to see Regis emcee Super Millionaire right now, with Million Dollar Password coming up soon. Also, didn’t ABC’s rights to a network version of (Super) Millionaire lapse in the last 12-18 months?

  16. 16 wheelloon Jan 27th, 2008 at 12:31 pm

Both correct Mike (I think it was around this time last year when it happened, but not 100% sure). Those are the “complications” I said ABC would encounter in bringing Super Millionaire back. Then again, it was not wise, in my book, for them to let their rights to it lapse in the first place…

On that note, what would be stopping another network like CBS, with Regis in toe, or “GSNBC” from picking up the rights to such? Don’t tell me none of them want it or none of them can “afford it”… :-/

  17. 17 Guy Feb 2nd, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Well who ever has the rights should do Super, a new version Multi-Millionaire, or just regluar, it should be a hit for atleast two seasons.

  18. 18 Steve Feb 5th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Well, now they’re throwing DoND up on THURSDAY nights at 8:00 — up against Lost and Survivor.

Those ratings numbers will be quite interesting but I still just don’t grasp the King Kong vs. Godzilla approach to scheduling shows. Is knocking other networks’ shows down all that important — even at the expense of what might be bigger ratings on some other night?
